So if you have seen ‘Deadpool 2,’ you know that Morena Baccarin’s Vanessa meets her end fairly early in the film, with her death being the driving motivation for a lot of Deadpool’s actions throughout the film. And then, at the end, when Deadpool gets ahold of Cable’s time-travel device, we see him go back and prevent her death (along with fixing a lot of other hilarious timeline missteps from the ‘X-Men’ universe), which begs the question, is she really alive again as of the end of ‘Deadpool 2?’
Luckily for us, EW recently sat down with the writers of the film, Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, who attempted to shed some light on the situation, though even they seem a bit tight-lipped about the whole thing. When asked directly about whether Deadpool preventing Vanessa’s death will change the timeline, and say, prevent Deadpool from forming X-Force in the film and meeting Domino, Reese replied with:
“Oh God, you’re bending our brains. It’s a very good point. We have thought about that. Sometimes we think Deadpool is just crazy enough of a franchise that people aren’t going to get particular about details about that. But we’ll see — we might be in deep trouble. We try to do what’s most entertaining at the end of the day.”
The other big question they asked regarding Vanessa had to do with her comic-book persona. In the comics, Vanessa is a mutant herself, a shape-shifter known as Copycat, and EW asked the writers whether her being alive again opens the door to see her powers onscreen and potentially have her become that persona and work alongside Deadpool. Again, Reese spoke for the pair of them and said:
“Absolutely. We’re leaving that option open. We certainly haven’t made any decisions along those lines. But we always thought that might be a fun twist for her at some point. The question is how to give her those powers without it feeling too coincidental. You have to iron out the logic if we go there. But why not? I think people would love to see Vanessa kicking ass.”
Personally, I’m not going to think too much about the time-travel implications of ‘Deadpool 2’ as the movie is really more about fun, and if any franchise deserves a pass when it comes to logic and sense, it is this one. As long as they continue to entertain and put on a good show, they can do whatever they want.
As for Vanessa, I think it would be amazing to see her become a superhero in her own right and after seeing Morena Baccarin play side-characters and love-interests in so many awesome genre shows over the years (i.e. ‘Firefly,’ ‘Gotham,’ etc) it would be incredible to see her become the bad-ass and do some fighting of her own.
