A Targaryen Tale: George R.R. Martin Talks The Other 'Game of Thrones' Prequel

For fans curious about the future of Westeros and the rest of the lands of ‘Game of Thrones’ on HBO, there is some small news that came out recently. While everyone knows the first prequel that had been discussed has already gone to production and pilot, it seems another prequel series still has a chance of moving forward as well, one that creator George R.R. Martin is very excited about.

According to his “Not a Blog” side, Martin has stated that the second prequel series, which is rumored to be all about the Targaryens and their rise to power, is “moving closer to a pilot order” though he admits that HBO has yet to approve that pilot order. But it has both a pilot script and a series bible written by Ryan Condal of the series ‘Colony’, a man that Martin likes very much, describing Condal as “a halluva strong writer, and a huge fan of A Song of Ice & Fire, Dunk & Egg, and Westeros in general.”

Of course, many are asking whether another prequel moving forward might mean Jane Goldman’s “The Long Night” prequel series is not doing as well as HBO would have hoped, but Martin says that is simply not the case. He believes there is more than enough room on HBO and on television in general for multiple ‘Game of Thrones’ spin-offs, seeing a vast world to pull many stories from. In his words:

The World of Ice & Fire is a WORLD, boys and girls. Huge continents, ten thousand years of history, cities, deserts, oceans, mysteries, triumphs and tragedies. If there were indeed eight million stories in The Naked City in the 50s, surely there are eight billion stories to be told about Westeros, Essos, Sothoryos, and the lands beyond the Sunset Sea, south of Oz and north of Shangri-La…

And in these days of a hundred networks, channels, and streaming services, I think television has plenty of room for two shows set in Westeros… or hell, maybe three or four… I still want to do Spearcarriers, after all.”

If the Targaryen series moves forward it will presumably take place many hundreds of years after ‘The Long Night’ prequel, telling a different story about a different time in the history of Westeros, and will, at least according to Martin, feature a lot of dragons, which only makes sense.

What are your thoughts on having a Targaryen prequel for ‘Game of Thrones?’ Or the idea of having multiple shows on at once? Does it get you excited to delve back into the world of ‘Game of Thrones?’ Or are you kind of getting worn out of it all? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below!
