Smollett says: “It’s no secret how much I love Black Canary. It’s a dream character and was a dream to play her.  If [the] dynamics fell in the right way, I would absolutely do it in a heartbeat, and Lord knows, I follow Misha wherever she leads me.” Green admitted that she often played as Black Canary against Smollett in the video game ‘Injustice’. “And I just would just do the ‘canary scream’ to win all the time, which would frustrate [Jurnee].  So, it was like, ‘It’s kind of kismet and funny that you’re now Black Canary […]

Take A Terrible Island Vacation With Jude Law And Naomie Harris In The Creepy Trailer For HBO’s ‘The Third Day’ https://sciencefiction.com/2020/08/10/take-a-terrible-island-vacation-with-jude-law-and-naomie-harris-in-the-creepy-trailer-for-hbos-the-third-day/ https://sciencefiction.com/2020/08/10/take-a-terrible-island-vacation-with-jude-law-and-naomie-harris-in-the-creepy-trailer-for-hbos-the-third-day/#disqus_thread Mon, 10 Aug 2020 15:00:00 +0000 https://sciencefiction.com/?p=354962 If there’s one thing horror movies have made abundantly clear, it’s that islands are terrible and no one should ever go to one, especially if they’re isolated.  Only bad things happen.  And that idea is further conveyed in the trailer for HBO tense new miniseries ‘The Third Day’.  The trailer definitely gives off some less-sunny ‘Midsommar’ vibes.  So if you had to cancel plans for a summer vacation this year, maybe that was for the best. Here is HBO’s official synopsis for the mini: The show is divided into two parts: ‘Summer’ and ‘Winter.’ In ‘Summer,’ one man (Jude Law) visits a mysterious island off the British coast and discovers a group of inhabitants intent on preserving their home at any cost. In the second half, aka ‘Winter,’ a strong-willed outsider (Naomie Harris) comes to the island seeking answers — but instead causes a battle to decide its fate. Law’s character, Sam, is featured in the first three hours, collectively known as “Summer.”  Those episodes were written by Dennis Kelly, creator of the buzzy and controversial British miniseries ‘Utopia’, which is being adapted for US audiences by Amazon Prime Video.  Those three episodes are directed by Marc Munden, who also […]

Jurnee Smollett Says It’s “Maddening” That The Racism In ‘Lovecraft Country’ Is Still A Problem Today https://sciencefiction.com/2020/08/06/jurnee-smollett-says-its-maddening-that-the-racism-in-lovecraft-country-is-still-a-problem-today/ https://sciencefiction.com/2020/08/06/jurnee-smollett-says-its-maddening-that-the-racism-in-lovecraft-country-is-still-a-problem-today/#disqus_thread Thu, 06 Aug 2020 11:00:12 +0000 https://sciencefiction.com/?p=354845 In addition to being a major star-on-the-rise in Hollywood, Jurnee Smollett has been an activist for Black rights from a young age.  As a child in 1992 (around the time she began appearing on ‘Full House’ as Michelle’s friend Denise), she was holding up signs after Rodney King’s infamous beating.  At 12, she was volunteering at a social justice nonprofit and by 18, she was its youngest board member.  She has been actively meeting with members of the Black Lives Matter organization in recent months.  And as it happens, her new HBO series, ‘Lovecraft Country’, set in the American South in the 1950s– the time of Jim Crow– also addresses matters of racism with a healthy dash of the supernatural.  While Smollett is excited about the new series, she is understandably furious, that the same issues facing her character 70 years ago are still problems that Black Americans face today. In a cover story for The Hollywood Reporter, Smollett said: “We’re telling the story of heroes that go on a quest to disrupt white supremacy, and it’s maddening that in the year 2020 it’s still relevant.” In addition to racism, Smollett is not a fan of sexism, something she has […]

Abrams.  So expect to see influences from both on ‘Lovecraft Country’. Participating in this year’s Television Critics Association (held virtually for the first time), Green explained how ‘Get Out’ opened the door: “I think this would have been incredibly hard to get on screen if Get Out hadn’t come out. I think that paved the way for people to really open up to the idea of seeing more Black people in genre spaces.” And regarding ‘Lost’, she said: “It’s an epic journey that wouldn’t have been possible if we weren’t making TV at the level that started with Lost and that pilot.” Peele produces via his Monkeypaw Productions, while Abrams does so through his Bad Robot.  Green and Bad Robot TV’s Ben Stephenson also serve as EPs.  Green developed the show, based on Matt Ruff’s 2016 novel of the same name, with Abrams and Peele. Set in 1950s Jim Crow America, the series explores racism with a horror spin.  […]

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, Mazin teased: “Neil, at one point, he’s like, ‘You know, there was one thing we were talking about for a while,’ and then he told me what it was. I was like, ‘Well, that’s going in. You couldn’t stop me from doing that.’ So we’re doing that.  And there’s quite a few things like that where it’s not like, ‘Oh, we just decided, oh, wouldn’t it be cool if there was one episode where Joel and Ellie get on motorcycles and confront a motorcycle gang?’ That’s not what we do. There’s no episodic nonsense here. This is all pretty much curated. The things that are new and enhancing of the storyline we’re doing are connected in organic, serious ways that fans and newcomers alike will appreciate.” ‘The Last of Us’ is a post-apocalyptic shooter game, […]

Sister Night. King took to Twitter to celebrate her cast and crew: Every single writer, director, cast, and crew member dug deep and gave everything because we believed in Dave Gibbons & Alan Moore’s story that was reimagined by Damon Lindelof. Thank you @TelevisionAcad for recognizing one of the most timely & important projects of our careers https://t.co/CEmwsGU3Un — Regina King (@ReginaKing) July 28, 2020 Humbly, King did not call attention to her own nomination.  Then again, she already has three!  She previously won for ‘American Crime’ (2015 and 2016, in two separate roles) and ‘Seven Seconds’ (2018).  She was also nominated in 2017, once again for ‘American Crime’.  She also won an Academy Award and Golden Globe in 2018 for the feature film ‘If Beale Street Could Talk’. In addition to King, Jeremy Irons (Adrian Veidt/Ozymandias) […]

Lindelof has declared that he is finished with ‘Watchmen’ after his entry.  He would prefer that HBO continue the series by bringing in other writers, but so far, the network has not made an announcement of doing so. As he told Variety: “We wanted people to understand that even in the context of this piece of fiction that the show started with something that really happened.  For me, I didn’t know about Tulsa until about two years before we made the show. I would hope that the show is an invitation to say that Tulsa is just the beginning. If you didn’t know about that, imagine what else you don’t know about. It shouldn’t have taken the death of George Floyd or […]

Show leads, Jeremy Irons (Adrian Veidt/Ozymandias), and Regina King (Angela Abar/Sister Night) scored nods for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie, and Outstanding Lead Actress, respectively.  Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Calvin Abar/Doctor Manhattan), Jovan Adepo (young William Reeves/Hooded Justice), and Louis Gossett Jr. (old William Reeves) were all nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor, while Jean Smart (Agent Laurie Blake) was recognized in the Outstanding Supporting Actress category. ‘Watchmen’ scored the most nominations of any series this year, with Amazon Prime Video’s comedy ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ coming in second with 20.  But also worth noting, Disney+’s ‘The Mandalorian’ scored a shocking 15 nods– “shocking” simply because many saw this as a show that was perhaps too kid/family-skewing or “pop” for the Emmys. Considering that Disney+ just launched last year, these are among Disney+’s first 19 nominations. Even […]

Vance), and Letitia “Leti” Lewis (Jurnee Smollett) are in a… museum?  They seem to be searching for a doorway, but then it seems that they are being watched. “This is some Journey to the Center of the Earth-type shit,” Atticus exclaims.  He then finds a strange inscription: “Beware all ye who tread the path, ever the tide shall rise.” Check out the clip for yourself below: ‘Lovecraft Country’ is based on the 2016 novel of the same name by Matt Ruff, and was developed for television by J.J. Abrams, Jordan Peele, and Misha Green, with Green acting as showrunner.  Set in 1950s Jim Crow America, the series explores racism with a horror spin.  Atticus, a Korean War veteran, and science-fiction-enthusiast is traveling through the South, with his uncle, George, and friend, singer and activist Leti, searching for his father, Montrose (Michael K. You can glimpse them and more in the new trailer below: Based on the 2016 novel of the same name by Matt Ruff,  ‘Lovecraft Country’ was developed for television by J.J. Abrams, Jordan Peele, and Misha Green, the latter of whom serves as showrunner.  Set in 1950s Jim Crow America, the series explores racism with a horror spin.  Atticus Black (Jonathan Majors), a Korean War veteran, and science-fiction-obsessed reader, is traveling through the South, with his uncle, George Freeman (Courtney B. Expect the literal monsters to perhaps pale in comparison to those of the human variety. As Williams told EW:  “Even before coronavirus and the murder of George Floyd, when I read the scripts last year I was […]

One of the most popular characters on ‘Watchmen’ was Looking Glass, a.k.a. Wade Tillman, portrayed by Tim Blake Nelson.  While on the surface, Looking Glass seemed to be a stand-in for Rorschach, Tillman was much better-adjusted, although he did have a trauma in his past.  As shown in Episode 5, “Little Fear of Lightning,” Tillman was near New York when Ozymandias’ giant killer squid appeared, killing millions with a psychic shockwave, but ushering in world peace as the nations of the world deescalated their arms race against each other, as they now feared a greater threat was coming from another dimension. Wade was a gangly teenage Jehovah’s Witness attempting to save souls at a carnival in New Jersey.  A female seductress lured him into the house of mirrors, convinced him to get undressed, and then took his clothes, leaving him trapped naked inside.  However, unwittingly, the woman […]
