‘Game Of Thrones’ Is “Officially” Crowned The Best TV Show Of The 21st Century https://sciencefiction.com/2020/07/31/game-of-thrones-is-officially-crowned-the-best-tv-show-of-the-21st-century/ https://sciencefiction.com/2020/07/31/game-of-thrones-is-officially-crowned-the-best-tv-show-of-the-21st-century/#disqus_thread Fri, 31 Jul 2020 13:00:29 +0000 https://sciencefiction.com/?p=354677 TV in 2000 was in a sad state, as remnants from the ’90s like ‘Beverly Hills 90210’ and ‘Boy Meets World’ left the airwaves and reality TV swept the world with the first seasons of ‘Survivor’ and ‘Big Brother’ leading to an onslaught of bottom-feeder horrors like ‘Who Wants to Marry A Multi-Millionnaire’, on which two strangers were married on live television, invaded the boob tube. But what a difference 20 years makes, as TV is now turning out projects that blow away theatrical films in terms of emotional weight and jaw-dropping shockers.  TV of the 2000s and 20-teens has hosted such winners as ‘The Sopranos’, ‘Mad Men’, ‘Dexter’, ‘Sons of Anarchy’, ‘The West Wing’, ‘Downton Abbey’, and sooooo many more.  Nowadays, streaming is king, delivering newer buzzy hits like ‘Fleabag’, ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’, and ‘Orange is the New Black’. But what are the absolute BEST shows of the 21st century?  The UK’s Digital Spy asked readers that very question.  In honor of their first digital issue, available through Amazon News+, the publication took a poll, and the results…? Well, for starters, none of the shows I mentioned are on the list. Hoist your chalice!  ‘Game of Thrones’ has “officially” […]

Now, “A Song of Ice and Fire” author George R. R. Martin has confirmed that this was the case. It sounds like showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss wanted to take Westeros to the big screen and HBO was opposed to the idea. According to Martin: “At the moment it is not my place to decide because the movie rights for Game of Thrones belong to HBO. Besides from that, we actually considered this option: David Benioff and Dan Weiss, the makers behind the TV show, wanted to finish the saga with three big movies after Season 7. Game of Thrones was supposed to end in cinema. It was seriously discussed four to five years ago.” While the idea is something that the showrunners were completely behind doing, it appears that HBO wasn’t: “The executives said: We produce TV shows, we are not in the cinema business. And if HBO does make a movie, like the movie based on Deadwood, they only produce it to show it on tv – not on the […]

That being said, if the entertainment behemoth ever did want to return to the characters who survived the blockbuster series, they are going to have a heavy price to pay. At the very least, they’ll need to spend quite a bit of money if they want Sophie Turner back to reprise her role as Sansa Stark, the Queen of the North. When asked by Variety if she would ever be willing to come back, Turner had this to say: “I would give anything to go back to what we had, but it wouldn’t be the same. It would be different, different people running it. I don’t want to be a part of it. Unless they give me the big bucks, I’m not doing it!” With David Benioff and D.B. Weiss spending the next few years tied to Netflix and few of the actors likely to return to such a venture, it feels like that the changes in creative teams are what Turner has no interest in dealing with. No offense meant to Turner as she was great in the show, but […]

Here Is Why HBO Cancelled Jane Goldman’s ‘Game Of Thrones’ Prequel https://sciencefiction.com/2020/01/17/here-is-why-hbo-cancelled-jane-goldmans-game-of-thrones-prequel/ https://sciencefiction.com/2020/01/17/here-is-why-hbo-cancelled-jane-goldmans-game-of-thrones-prequel/#disqus_thread Fri, 17 Jan 2020 19:49:03 +0000 https://sciencefiction.com/?p=348562 With casting and pre-production well underway for Jane Goldman’s ‘Game of Thrones‘ prequel it was a bit of a shocker to both fans of the franchise and those involved in the production that it ended up being canceled. Now, HBO’s Casey Bloys has gone on record as to why the network ended up switching gears to develop ‘House of the Dragon‘ instead. We know that initially, multiple shows had been pitched for the network. At first, it sounded like HBO was even interested in developing a few at the same time. When it all played out though we ended up seeing ‘House of the Dragon’ moving full steam ahead and the prequel which Jane Goldman was working on that had already shot a pilot ended up being scrapped. So what happened? Thanks to a recent interview with TV Line, Bloys shared the following: “The Jane Goldman one was a bit of a bigger swing because there was a lot more invention. House of the Dragon, George has text and history for that era, so there is a bit more of a road map. You understood the history and what the story would be, so it’s easier to [visualize as a […]

Martin.  Martin’s book ‘Blood & Fire’ is said to be a major influence.  Condal and ‘GoT’s Miguel Sapochnik will act as co-showrunners.  This series will be set 300 years prior to the events of ‘Game of Thrones’ and focuses on the back history of House Targaryen, “rich in the dragonlord ancestors of Daenerys.”  The first season will be comprised of 10 episodes.  Condal, Martin, Sapochnik, and Vince Gerardis will executive produce. Bloys added: “Obviously it’s a big, complicated show.” Uh-huh.  Great. On a more promising (and verbose) note, Bloys assured: […]

In fact, Peter Dinklage shares this could be one of the main reasons people have had such a problem with the series finale. We know that “all good things must come to an end,” but not everyone agrees that the final season was good. Even as someone who loved where all the characters ended up, I wasn’t one of the viewers who were at all thrilled about the pacing of our final outing in Westeros. Dinklage brought this up when he was asked by The New Yorker if he had been following the fan response to the series: “No. Well, everybody’s always going to have an opinion, and that means an ownership. It’s like breaking up with somebody. They get upset. I can’t speak for everybody, but my feeling is they didn’t want it to end, so a lot of people got angry. I feel like what [the showrunners] Dave [Benioff] and Dan [Weiss] did was extraordinary. This happens. Monsters are created. And you don’t see it coming. We vote them into office. You look the other […]

Most fans couldn’t get enough of the show and with what felt like a rushed final season, that left many questions. So many questions! While we’ll have to wait another couple of lifetimes for George R.R. Martin‘s masterpiece to be released in novel form (and hopefully include a more satisfying conclusion than the series), we can at least get some insight as to what the characters were thinking during those final episodes thanks to a making-of documentary for the ‘Game of Thrones’ finale titled “Duty is the Death of Love”   RELATED: Wonder What Was Up With Drogon In The ‘Game Of Thrones’ Finale? From what he did with his mother’s body to the burning of the Iron Throne, showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss offered insight as to what the dragon was up to. These details can be found in a making-of documentary for the final season titled “Duty is the Death of Love’ which has had a few key scenes revealed by Entertainment Weekly. To start with, Emilia Clarke who plays Daenerys Targaryen was worried about what Drogon did with her body when it was carried away. The actress was partially worried that she might end up as dragon food, but that wasn’t the case. Benioff let Clarke know that “Drogon’s not going to eat you. He’s not a cat. Did you see how gently he was nudging you?” In fact, the showrunners confirmed that Drogon was taking her body to Volantis. This was a theory many fans had after the season finale and seeing the new royal council reveal that the dragon was seen […]

Clarke, who starred as Daenerys Targaryen (aka The Mother of Dragons and Breaker of Chains) on the HBO fantasy series, disclosed on Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast that since her breakout role in ‘Game of Thrones,’ she has become “a lot more savvy about what I’m comfortable with, and what I am OK with doing,” in terms of onscreen nudity.  The Primetime Emmy Award nominated actress recollects having arguments on the sets of other projects where the fights would start with her saying, “‘No, the sheet stays up” and they would counter at her with, ‘You don’t want to disappoint your ‘Game of Thrones’ fans.’  As a no-name actress “fresh from drama school” when she was cast,  Clarke also thought back to being asked to do several nude scenes right away during her first season of ‘Game of Thrones.’ “Season 1 was what it was,” she says. “It was a f–k ton of nudity… it […]

While starring in ‘Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker’ is probably a consolation prize, it would have been a stable paycheck and likely beneficial to the actress’s ongoing career to be associated with the most popular show to ever grace the small screen. Ackie was asked about the cancellation but before she did, she gave HBO a thumbs down and blew a raspberry before stating: “Can you put that in [the article]? It’s an industry in which things happen, things get put down, I’m just really excited about what is out there for me now. That was a great project, it didn’t work out. I’m ready to look for more stuff. [I’m] taking it in my stride. This industry will throw you about left, right and center, so you’ve got to take it in your stride!” Ackie wasn’t the only one who was let down by this prequel being canned as creator George R.R. Martin previously shared: “It goes without saying that I was saddened to hear the show would not be going to […]

Somehow, in the episode “The Last of the Starks,” we saw Daenerys Targaryen sitting alone at a table, and a coffee cup could be spotted with the rest of the dishes. Emilia Clarke has previously been blamed for the cup by Sophie Turner, and now the actress wants it to be known that the Queen of Dragons is not responsible. The prequel series had decided not to focus on Targaryens or dragons which has you wondering if that was what ended HBO’s interest in the concept. As the network did put in an order for a 10-episode prequel titled ‘House of the Dragon,‘ it seems that the fantasy elements are what they wanted to focus on. As to the prequel we’ll never get to see, George R.R. Martin did feel a bit saddened by it not being picked up: “It goes without saying that I was saddened to hear the show would not be going to series. Jane Goldman is a terrific screenwriter, and I enjoyed brainstorming with her. I do not know why HBO decided not to go to series on this one, but I do not think it had to do with HOUSE OF THE DRAGON. This was never an either/or situation. If television has room enough for multiple CSIs and CHICAGO shows… well, Westeros and Essos are a lot bigger, with thousands of years of history and […]
