Sadly the 1990 hit ‘Flatliners‘ is being rebooted and it looks like it’ll be done with Diego Luna (‘Elysium‘,’The Terminal’) joining the cast. Luna has just finished wrapping up work on his part in ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story‘ and I’m glad to see that he seems to be sticking with genre work for at least the near future with this and a dystopian love story titled ‘The Bad Batch’ on the horizon. There isn’t too much news on casting for the film so far but we do know that he’ll be joining Ellen Page (‘X-Men: Days of Future Past‘,’Inception’) on the big screen when the film finally is released. The reboot will be directed by Niels Arden Oplev (‘The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo’,’Dead Man Down’) and work off of a script by Ben Ripley (‘Source Code‘,’Species: The Awakening’).
This is a reboot that has been on the books by Sony since 2011 and seems to have finally found the traction its needed to move forward into production.
The original piece was one of Joel Schumacher’s works and followed four students who believed that they could find out what happens after death. It had an amazing cast consisting of Julia Roberts, Kevin Bacon, Oliver Platt, William Baldwin and Kiefer Sutherland. For their experiments, they found a way to bring themselves to death and back to life which has them all being haunted from what they experienced on the other side.
I’m curious as to what direction they will go with a reboot as the premise is interesting and could easily be adapted for a full on science fiction or horror theme with some tweaking. Even with some major changes, I can honestly say I have no interest in rewatching the original and there would have to be some major plot changes to catch my interest enough into checking out a reboot.
