RUMOR ALERT: This is just RUMOR at this time, so take this information with a grain of salt.
Well, I guess I jumped to the wrong conclusion when Universal announced that Elisabeth Moss was in talks to star in ‘The Invisible Man’. It seems that while ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ star will be starring in the movie, she won’t be the one under the bandages. Universal is still looking for a MAN to be ‘The Invisible Man’ and the top two contenders are Armie Hammer and Alexander Skarsgård. (I liked my original assumption with Moss in the lead better.)
This will be a lower-budget adaptation of this classic horror story, with Leigh Wannell directing and Jason Blum producing under his Blumhouse banner. Blumhouse has dominated the field of low-budget horror movies for the past several years, with these micro-budget releases typically earning many times their budget in ticket sales.
Universal released ‘Dracula Untold’ and then ‘The Mummy’ (starring Tom Cruise) in an effort to launch its Dark Universe of shared universe movies based on its library of classic horror monsters. These were intended to be big-budget tentpoles, mimicking the Marvel Studios format of blockbusters, but audiences weren’t receptive. Last year, Blum expressed interest in taking a stripped-down approach, which the studio went for.
As it turns out, Moss will portray Cecilia Kass, the female lead. The main character remains the male, Adrian Griffin. This version will be updated with Griffin being “a billionaire sociopath who made his money by developing an invisibility suit for the Department of Defense.” Johnny Depp was previously attached to star in ‘The Invisible Man’ until Universal scrapped plans for a more expensive, splashier interpretation.
Hammer’s name recently surfaced in connection to starring in Warner Brothers’ ‘The Batman’, which proved to be false. He was nominated for a Golden Globe for his performance in the 2017 film ‘Call Me By Your Name’. Last year, he appeared in the acclaimed science fiction movie ‘Sorry to Bother You’, as well as ‘Hotel Mumbai’, and ‘On the Basis of Sex’. He will next be seen in the horror movie ‘Wounds’.
Skarsgård is best known for starring as Nordic vampire Eric Northman on ‘True Blood’. He continues to thrive on TV, starring in HBO’s Golden Globe-winning ‘Big Little Lies’, and on AMC’s ‘Little Drummer Girl’. Last year, he starred in Netflix’s ‘Mute‘, and he will next be seen in ‘Long Shot’ which just premiered at the SXSW festival. He will also appear in 2020’s ‘Godzilla Vs. Kong’.
Also making its debut at SXSW was ‘Us’, Jordan Peele’s new horror movie, in which Moss has a supporting role.
