Scarlett Johansson Shares Her True Feelings On Black Widow’s MCU Fate https://sciencefiction.com/2020/09/29/scarlett-johansson-shares-her-true-feelings-on-black-widows-mcu-fate/ https://sciencefiction.com/2020/09/29/scarlett-johansson-shares-her-true-feelings-on-black-widows-mcu-fate/#disqus_thread Tue, 29 Sep 2020 13:57:41 +0000 https://sciencefiction.com/?p=355225 If 2020 was a “normal” year, we would have all seen the ‘Black Widow’ solo film from Marvel and the Marvel Cinematic Universe in theaters already.  Unfortunately, this year has been anything but normal, and due to the global pandemic, the film has been pushed from its originally-planned May 1st premiere date to what was then planned for a November 2020 release, and recently Marvel bumped the film even further, with the premiere now scheduled for February 12, 2021. The forthcoming film, of course, is a “prequel” of sorts to the most recent Avengers films, ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ because as audiences know, Natasha Romanoff valiantly sacrificed herself in the latter movie so that the superhero team might have a chance to defeat Thanos and restore their world to a semblance of pre-Snap normality (which they did).  In a recent interview, Scarlett Johansson spoke about her character and her feelings on how the character met her on-screen end: “I love Natasha. She’s had an incredible 10-year journey, and I felt that she was finally able to make an active choice. It seemed very in-character, that ultimate sacrifice that she makes. She’s made peace with that, and, in some […]

DaCosta becomes the first Black woman to direct a Marvel Studios movie, and only the second Black woman to direct any comic book movie, following Gina Prince-Blythewood, who helmed Netflix’s ‘The Old Guard’, which was released just weeks ago. Reportedly, DaCosta met with Marvel Studios CEO Kevin Feige over the weekend and it seems he liked what he heard.  She replaces Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, who co-directed the first ‘Captain Marvel’.  That picture grossed over $1 billion worldwide.  The screenplay for the sequel is being penned by Megan McDonnell, a […]

‘Black Widow’: Fans Should Expect To See More Of Florence Pugh’s Black Widow In The Future https://sciencefiction.com/2020/07/07/black-widow-fans-should-expect-to-see-more-of-florence-pughs-black-widow-in-the-future/ https://sciencefiction.com/2020/07/07/black-widow-fans-should-expect-to-see-more-of-florence-pughs-black-widow-in-the-future/#disqus_thread Tue, 07 Jul 2020 12:00:10 +0000 https://sciencefiction.com/?p=353918 Fans may have already pieced this together, but it seems that ‘Black Widow’ sets up Florence Pugh‘s Yelena Belova as the new Black Widow of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.  The character was introduced as a second Black Widow who was originally sent to kill Natasha Romanoff, the character that moviegoers have fallen in love with, as portrayed by Scarlett Johansson. But of course, Natasha was killed in ‘Avengers: Endgame’.  Pugh’s Yelena will debut in ‘Black Widow’… whenever that comes out.  But it seems fans should get used to her presence, as it sounds as though we’ll be seeing a lot more of her in the coming years. Speaking to Empire, director Cate Shortland shared: “[Kevin Feige] realized that the audience would expect an origin story so, of course, we went in the opposite direction.  And we didn’t know how great Florence Pugh would be. We knew she would be great, but we didn’t know how great. Scarlett is so gracious, like, ‘Oh, I’m handing her the baton.’ So it’s going to propel another female storyline.” ‘Black Widow’ is currently scheduled to open in theaters on November 6, 2020, depending on how the COVID-19 pandemic works out.  Due to the film’s $150-$200 million […]

The Falcon and possibly the next Captain America, while Don Cheadle portrays War-Machine/James Rhodes.  But even though Mackie is set to co-headline the Disney+ series ‘Falcon & Winter Soldier’, he thinks Marvel Studios and parent company Disney could do a lot more to increase diversity behind the camera. In a dual interview with ‘Snowpiercer’s Daveed Diggs, Mackie lamented: “When ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ comes out, I’m the lead.  When ‘Snowpiercer’ came out, you’re the lead. We have the power and the ability to ask those questions. It really bothered me that I’ve done seven Marvel movies where every producer, every director, every stunt person, every costume designer, every PA, every single person has been white. “We’ve had one Black producer; his name was Nate Moore.  He produced ‘Black Panther.’ But then when you do ‘Black Panther,’ you have a Black director, Black producer, a Black costume designer, a Black stunt choreographer. In the meantime, Sebastian Stan, who co-stars as James Buchanan “Bucky” Barnes, a.k.a the Winter Soldier, is promoting his latest film, the mostly-improvised drama ‘Endings, Beginnings’.  But of course, questions arose regarding ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’, and he offered a few fresh insights into that project. When speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, he was asked whether ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ would retain the same cinematic feel of the movies, or if it was more of a standard TV series, to which he replied that it was a bit of both. “It felt like both. In a lot of ways, it felt like a movie… What I loved about it was that, tonally, it was very much in the same world that ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ […]

A second Ace Comic Con is already scheduled for Chicago in October and that remains on the books, as most are hoping the current COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic will be contained by then. Below is the full statement from the event’s organizers: “ACE Comic Con is an extended family. We feel like we know each one of you personally, and as much as we make you feel welcome into our lives a few times a year, you have been gracious in return. Yesterday, a State of Emergency was called in Massachusetts, and after many hours of consultation with the BCEC, a city-owned facility, it was determined that running the event at its regularly scheduled date/time is not possible due to ‘force majeure.’ We are working with the […]

The Final ‘Black Widow’ Trailer Offers A Closer Look At The Taskmaster’s Army https://sciencefiction.com/2020/03/09/the-new-black-widow-trailer-offers-a-closer-look-at-the-taskmasters-army/ https://sciencefiction.com/2020/03/09/the-new-black-widow-trailer-offers-a-closer-look-at-the-taskmasters-army/#disqus_thread Mon, 09 Mar 2020 17:54:56 +0000 https://sciencefiction.com/?p=352184 SPOILER ALERT: There is some information contained here that could be considered SPOILERS for ‘Black Widow’ so proceed with caution. The latest ‘Black Widow’ trailer is here and sheds more light on the film’s plot and the involvement of The Taskmaster, the film’s big villain.  It seems that he now runs the Red Room, the Russian agency responsible for Natasha’s (Scarlett Johansson) role as a super-spy and assassin, a life she left behind when she joined the Avengers.  But now she’s back and it looks as though she is fighting to save her “family”– Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Melina Vostokoff (Rachel Weisz), and Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian (David Harbour). Unlike Black Widow, it seems that the Taskmaster’s new soldiers are not free thinkers, but almost like robots under “his” control.  There is some hint that the Taskmaster will have the same powers as “he” has in the comics, to mimic any physical abilities “he” witnesses.   ***SPOILER ALERT*** It has been leaked that Weisz’s character’s full name is Melina Vostokoff, the real name of the Black Widow enemy, the Iron Maiden, in the comic books.  Because of that, there is some speculation that Weisz will betray Natasha in this movie, and […]

(via ComicBook.com)  In the comics, She-Hulk is Jennifer Walters, Bruce Banner’s cousin, who gains similar superpowers after he gives her a desperate life-saving blood transfusion.  But She-Hulk was never a brutish monster.  She retained her regular personality in her emerald enhanced form, similar to Ruffalo’s depiction in ‘Avengers Endgame’. Speaking of ‘Endgame’, the Hulk was badly injured when he snapped the Infinity Gauntlet to bring back all of the beings that Thanos had wiped out in ‘Infinity War’.  So there were some questions regarding whether or not Ruffalo would be back at all.  Luckily, it sounds as though he will and hopefully, ‘She-Hulk’ will give an idea as to his future with the franchise. ‘Rick & Morty’ writer, Jessica Gao, is overseeing ‘She-Hulk’.  Reportedly, the show is set to begin filming this summer.   RELATED:  Lou Ferrigno SMASHES Mark Ruffalo And Disney’s Take On The Hulk In ‘Avengers: Endgame’   Last week, rumors swirled that Disney was seeking an “Alison Brie-type” for the lead.  With her athletic role […]

‘The Falcon And The Winter Soldier’ Recruits Carl Lumbly, Possibly As Isaiah Bradley https://sciencefiction.com/2020/02/21/the-falcon-and-the-winter-soldier-recruits-carl-lumbly-possibly-as-isaiah-bradley/ https://sciencefiction.com/2020/02/21/the-falcon-and-the-winter-soldier-recruits-carl-lumbly-possibly-as-isaiah-bradley/#disqus_thread Fri, 21 Feb 2020 21:03:25 +0000 https://sciencefiction.com/?p=351379 Red Rover, Red Rover… Another DC actor is crossing over to Marvel, as ‘Supergirl’s Carl Lumbly (M’yrnn J’onzz) has been cast in ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’.  Though it has not been officially confirmed, it is speculated that he is playing Isaiah Bradley, the first Black Captain America, from the 2003 miniseries ‘Truth: Red, White, and Black’.  In that story, it was revealed that the American government attempted to recreate the Super Soldier formula that made Steve Rogers the superhuman dynamo Captain America.  But this newer formula was tested on African American soldiers (based on the real-life Tuskeegee experiments), but the results weren’t the same.  Isaiah Bradley was the only soldier that survived these experiments, but it ultimately damaged his brain. In ‘Avengers: Endgame’, a now-elderly Steve Rogers bequeathed his shield to Sam Wilson, The Falcon (Anthony Mackie).  And in the comics, The Falcon became Captain America for a time, so fans are anticipating a similar evolution on ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’.  With a new Black Captain America coming into being on this series it would certainly make sense to explore the story of the first Black man to inhabit that role. And, if you’re keeping track, […]

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige announced ‘She-Hulk’ last August along with two other Disney+ shows featuring characters that will be new to live-action, ‘Moon Knight’ and ‘Ms. Marvel’.  This is the second wave of Marvel Studios shows coming to the streaming service, and the first wave — ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’, ‘WandaVision’, ‘Loki’, and ‘Hawkeye’ — hasn’t started airing yet, so there will be a while before ‘She-Hulk’ and the rest arrive, but that doesn’t mean that work isn’t going on behind the scenes.   RELATED:  Emmy Winning Jessica Gao Is Going To Write ‘She-Hulk’ For Disney+   Okay, just to clarify, this information comes from Illuminerdy via anonymous sources, so don’t take any of […]

If you were hoping that the Marvel Cinematic Superheroes time-mangling began and ended in ‘Avengers: Endgame’, unfortunately, there may be more chronographic shenanigans coming up, specifically on ‘Loki’.  As we saw in ‘Endgame’, thanks to the Avengers’ temporal-muckery, a version of Loki escaped with a version of the Tesseract and it is believed that the upcoming Disney+ ‘Loki’ series will follow that Loki’s exploits.  (Well… I mean, the other Loki’s exploits involve decomposing so…) Marvel scooper, Daniel Ritchman shared via his Patreon that ‘Loki’ will introduce Kang the Conqueror, the time-twisting Avengers foe that has previously been off-limits to the MCU.  In case you didn’t know, Kang is also known as Immortus, Iron Lad, Rama-Tut, Scarlet Centurian, and Victor Timely.  And one of those aliases — specifically Rama-Tut — appeared first in the pages of ‘Fantastic Four’, meaning that all versions of Kang were bundled with the film rights to the ‘FF’, meaning that Fox has had the rights all this time. The Disney+ Marvel commercial that aired during the Super Bowl depicted Loki (Tom Hiddleston) dressed in prisoner garb bearing the logo […]

Super Saturday: ‘The Marvel Super Heroes’ (1966) – The FIRST Marvel Cartoon Ever! https://sciencefiction.com/2020/02/08/super-saturday-the-marvel-super-heroes-1966-the-first-marvel-cartoon-ever/ https://sciencefiction.com/2020/02/08/super-saturday-the-marvel-super-heroes-1966-the-first-marvel-cartoon-ever/#disqus_thread Sat, 08 Feb 2020 15:00:09 +0000 https://sciencefiction.com/?p=346724 Generally speaking, my main focus of Super Saturday is on shows that actually aired on Saturday mornings, but as I plan to cover more Marvel shows, I figured I should start from the very beginning, and it just so happens that the first Marvel cartoon aired on weekday afternoons.  (Actually, I have already covered on Marvel series, ‘Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends’.) Many fans have fond recollections of various Marvel Superhero cartoons from when they were growing up– ‘X-Men’, ‘Spider-Man’, even ‘The Silver Surfer’ has his own series for a while.  But the first excursion of Marvel champions into animation was a truly bizarre footnote. In 1966, Grantray-Lawrence Animation delivered the syndicated package ‘The Marvel Super Heroes’, which aired on weekday afternoons in select cities.  However to call these cartoons “animated” is using the term at its loosest.  The art was xeroxed directly from comic books, just as the scripts were lifted from the word bubbles.  The resulting episodes featured a slap-dash of pencils by the likes of Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, and Don Heck among others.  And while the characters mouths moved and their eyes blinked, there was very little movement otherwise.  An arm here.  A leg there.  Generally, […]
