‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ was a bit of a departure for Marvel Studios in that it focused on a group of new characters that weren’t affiliated with the Avengers. But even so, it did connect to the larger Marvel narrative by incorporating Thanos and his quest for the Infinity Stones, a plot thread that has been building since the first ‘Thor’ and will culminate in 2018’s ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ in which the Guardians will appear.
But even with Thanos playing such an important role in the first ‘Guardians’– he is, after all, the father of Gamora and Nebula– the big purple deity will not appear in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2’. Instead, director James Gunn wanted the familial focus to remain on the two feuding sisters.
As he stated:
“It’s about two sisters. It’s not about the sisters and their father. It’s about two sisters and what were the sisters’ problems with each other? And, you know, some of those things were caused by being raised by the ultimate abusive father. But it really isn’t about Thanos, and frankly, I just wasn’t inspired to put him in the movie. You know, I kind of go with my gut on these things and it just wasn’t what I wanted to do. It wasn’t the most fun part of the movie last time for me and I just didn’t really wanna do it this time. And again, the relationship with Thanos has nothing to do with it. It’s not about their relationship with Thanos. It’s about their relationship to each other, and what is that? And that was interesting to me, and I thought that was important to our story, and that was important to our characters. What happened with them in the past—there’s a lot of stuff that happened with them in the past that affects our characters presently.”
Considering that the Guardians are all mostly confirmed for ‘Avengers: Infinity War’, it’s not as if fans won’t get to see the Mad Titan facing off with the space-faring rebels, including his two daughters. In fact, it’s highly likely that the events of ‘Guardians, Vol. 2’ will influence the story of ‘Infinity War’.
Are you disappointed that Thanos won’t be a part of ‘Guardians Vol. 2’? Or do you have faith that the movie will be just a strong without him?
