NBC has announced plans to craft a spin-off to its six-season series ‘Grimm’.  While ‘Grimm’ was never a massive hit, it was a steady workhorse that developed a rich mythology over its run and earned a devoted legion of fans.  The new series will feature a female lead, but unlike some other reboots, this series will actually build on the established continuity of the first show, and the producers have even teased that characters from the first series will appear. David Giuntoli headlined the first series, as Nick Burkhardt, a police detective that discovers he is descended from a long line of monster hunters, known as Grimms (based on the Brothers […]

Yeah, things don’t look too good for Nick and Julieve as they take on the Zerstorer who’s having a bit of fun with them. But why won’t he deliver the coup de grace? That becomes clear when some Team Grimm research reveals the Zerstorer needs the Grimm to go through a portal opened to our world to change his address. And guess what happens? Well, not exactly what we expected. Nick and Julieve make it through, breaking the mirror in the process. But as the gang regroups, Diana realizes two things: 1. That Julieve has left a part of herself—her Wesen self—on the other side and, 2. “He’s coming”. It’s no surprise that she’s in full-on freak-out mode but fear not, there’s a plan. Nick suggests they head to the cabin—one of the first places he’d ever worked a Grimm case—as a safe haven so to speak. Problem is, nowhere else could be called safe as the Zerstorer, in human guise, makes his way across Portland, leaving bodies in his wake as he searches […]

TV Review: ‘Grimm: Where the Wild Things Were’ https://sciencefiction.com/2017/03/18/tv-review-grimm-where-the-wild-things-were/ https://sciencefiction.com/2017/03/18/tv-review-grimm-where-the-wild-things-were/#disqus_thread Sat, 18 Mar 2017 17:56:40 +0000 http://sciencefiction.com/?p=244597 “Hell is empty and all the devils are here.” To date, it’s been an extremely uneven year for Grimm in its final season. The first trio of episodes highlighted the confrontation between Nick and Renard. That story arc was strong in both narrative and action. Unfortunately, after that, this season—with one or two notable exceptions—has been, in a word, boring. Wesen-of-the-week episodes were less interesting than any time in Grimm’s six-year run but more than that, the table was never truly set for the big bad. This mistake has cost what could have been a fabulous swan song but, as it stands, better late than never. Groggy from her trip through the looking glass, Julieve finds herself in the wilds. She may have been foolish to travel through the mirror without telling anyone but she uses her smarts in this Other Side, staying out of sight of the overly savage Wesen stalking the wood. It’s not long before Nick, with the help of the Stick, joins her and the two discover that they aren’t alone in this world. Aside from the Wesen (who do not woge, even after death), there’s also a human settlement, rightfully terrified of the Wesen. Oh, […]

We knew business had to pick up as it relates to the ‘magic mirror’ and Julieve is the one leading the charge. Wanting to take the fight to the man in the mirror, she picks Adalind’s brain (and library of Hexenbiest reading material) to find a way to cross over. There’s a focus to Julieve that we haven’t seen since last season and even though she promises not to go at it alone, the minute she runs across the possible solution, Julieve can’t help but test things out. Not only does it work but, in one of the more head scratching character moments, Julieve walks through the newly opened portal to God knows where. No weapons, no backup. Just her. Julieve’s insanity aside, it’s actually the case-of-the-week that takes […]

Well, that is according to the drunk, stereotypical hunter who, along with his buddy, runs afoul of a forest Wesen and its non-Wesen tree buddy. Grimm’s procedural story this year has followed an unfortunate pattern of mediocrity and “Tree People” does nothing to break this trend. Sure, it’s pretty cool to see a Groot-like creature lumbering around to some decent effects but action-wise, we don’t get much except Nick hammering the offending creature—known as a kinoshimobe—with an ax to the chest. Now, what “Tree People” does pretty well is give us an antagonist that is not inherently evil but whose actions are for the benefit of the planet. This isn’t the first time that Nick has been faced with that gray area type decision. Yes, as a cop, he has a duty to protect human life, something echoed by his status as a Grimm. But who protects those Wesen that act through their biological imperatives, ones that, on the whole, is probably in the best interest in the long-run health of the world? Sadly, we’re never really given anything more than a cursory debate on […]

Throw in a bit of magic mirror action involving Julieve and the Reddish Skull from last and Renard doing his own research into the magic symbols as we hit the back third of Grimm’s final season. Our Grimmsters are doing more research into the Pleiades Cluster and what it foretells, getting a lot of information about the cluster’s history but no real grasp on what’s coming. Renard gets in contact with Dasha, a Russian woman who apparently has a bit of experience with this type of stuff. Very similar to Nick and the gang, her warnings are very generic, with no specifics of the what, the when, or the how that’s coming. Only that it could be very bad and Diana is most probably involved in some way, shape, or form. As we’re talking about forms, the A storyline tells the tale of four scientists, led by Dr. Victor Shelley, doing something that science should never propose to do: play the part of […]

Not only is it the obligatory Valentine’s Day episode but as it turns out, it’s Monroe’s bday and what better way to celebrate than a weekend out a rustic hotel with his loving wife and mother-to-be Rosalee. And Hank. And Wu. And Nick and Adaline. And Julieve. And baby Kelly. Not quite what I’d call a romantic getaway; neither would Monroe. Only in Grimm, baby. Only in Grimm. So as the gang hits the estate, a devilish Wesen—Cupiditas, to be specific–recognizes Nick as the cop that arrested his dad years ago. It turns out, this was in Nick’s pre-grimm days so he doesn’t recognize the kid. So what type of vengeance does this bastard Wesen have in store for the gang? Spike their champagne with his own saliva to initiate the Amor de Infierno. The spell makes its victim fall for the person whose hair they ingest from the potion. In this case we get all sorts of crazy as Nick falls for […]

Is nothing sacred anymore?! Despite it being a shortened final season, we’re hit with another Grimm monster-of-the-week though, this time we are given a few plot point nuggets that will play dividends down the road. But first, the not so exciting Wesen storyline. Dan Wells, an older, down on his luck gentleman staying at the Englewood Hotel, gets a visit from one of the uglier Wesen you’ll ever see—along with some less than impressive CGI. Were it not for the aftereffects of the visitor—Dan kills a man looking to help him—said Wesen probably goes unnoticed. But Nick and Hank are soon on the case and, after digging into the hotel, recognize that this isn’t the first time strange occurrences have happened between its walls. Cutting through the muck, Monroe volunteers as bait to draw out this sleep-sucking Wesen (the Alpe) and it works; they track the Alpe down, following it through hidden tunnels between the walls and to Beverly Garwood, the hotel owner. With a Wesen of her ilk, there’s only one real […]

Strange symbols, psychic connections to the still mysterious Stick and ghostly hauntings by a murdered man that you once called ‘friend’…it’s all building in a way that, by series resolution, seems as if it will end in a well-remembered bang. But first, the whimper. “The Seven-Year Itch” case this week, if the title didn’t already give part of it away, has Nick, Hank, and the Portland PD trying to track down a killer stalking the streets. Yes, it’s a Wesen killer but unlike one we’ve ever seen. This immortal “Party Animal” (at least that’s the Greek translation of the name) only pops up once every seven years or so, gorges itself before burrowing back underground with its carryout food. Yes, for all intents and purposes, it’s a cicada Wesen, which means that it’s uglier than sin. Cutting to the chase, Nick and the others discover said Wesen is actually William Stillman, one of the original founders of Portland. They confront […]

In this case, it’s the el Cuegle. Though this three-eyed, three-armed Wesen seems like any other baby eating monster, el Cuegle works for the greater good. But how in the Sam Hill is chomping down on young babes a fight for the greater good? “What if you could stop Ted Bundy, wouldn’t you want me to?” Turns out that el Cuegle has a gift (or a curse) where it can not only see the past and present but, with its third eye, glimpse the future of a baby who’s destined to commit unspeakable crimes. It’s a topic tackled by some of the best writers in history with Philip K. Dick’s Minority Report one of the earliest examples of this situation. For comic book fans, this type of pre-crime identification is in line with the recently completed Civil War II story arch where an Inhuman by the name […]

Backs against the wall, Nick and the gang are feeling the pressure of Renard’s crusade to take them all down. With few options, Nick embraces the age-old adage that ‘fortune favors the bold’ and revisits the ‘sorting hat’ transformation spell to become the one person he hates most: Captain and soon-to-be Mayor Sean Renard. After being forced to resign by Renard, Hank and Wu head to the tunnels to meet up with Nick and Juliet. There, our Grimm breaks his daring plan to them and soon after, everyone else. As Rosalee works on the formula, Adalind is tasked with getting the Renard-specific ingredient: strands of the police captain’s hair. With only a minor hiccup during the gathering phase, Nick inhales the potion and transforms into Renard—woge abilities included. While Nick and the gang prep for a major announcement, Renard has his own issue. Jeremiah, Rachel Woods’ co-worker confronts the captain about Rachel’s death. Turns out he saw Renard enter Rachel’s pad the same night of her death and needs some cool cash to remain silent about it. Enter Lt. Grossante. Renard tasks the officer and […]

Trapped like rats as a former ally closes in on them, Nick, Monrosalee, and the gang continue their fight against now-Mayor Sean Renard as he continues his insane obsession to see Portland’s Grimm dead and gone. Once again, we pick up where we left off last week (does any show do this more than Grimm?) as Renard and the Portland S.E.R.T. team moves in to take Nick down. Renard is ready to enjoy his victory when Hank and Wu speed in with an eleventh hour reprieve. Arresting their former police captain for the murder of Rachel Wood, they hope the gamble will buy Nick time to get out of dodge and back underground. While they temporarily take Renard out of the picture, S.E.R.T. moves in for the takedown only to be neutralized by the mysterious Stick—the artifact that healed Eve and resurrected Nick from multiple gunshot wounds. The gang uses the distraction to their advantage, retreating back into the tunnels (thanks to Monrosalee finding the outside exit last week) where they look to regroup. Meanwhile, Hank and Wu do their best to keep Renard locked up but […]

Both are confused, Nick by how he seemed to have been dead and is now alive again and Renard by why exactly he ran a sword through Bonaparte to save Nick (neither knowing that Renard’s daughter Diana was controlling him via her doll). The scene is tense and will most likely be among the few quiet moments between the two men this season if the official synopsis is correct, and Renard’s hasty exit does not bode well for Nick, as the Captain is most likely going to clear his head and then start the manhunt for Nick that the synopsis speaks of, setting in motion the main plot for the season. Check out the full clip for yourself below as well as the synopsis, and then share your thoughts on where ‘Grimm’ is going this season in the comments below! And here’s the full […]

It’s a night (and a network) that has doomed shows from ‘Constantine‘ to ‘Dracula‘, but ‘Grimm’ managed to beat the odds. The series not only survived, but thrived for the past five years on a network with a reputation for canceling cult shows that rivals that of Fox, and it did so on a night traditionally thought of a graveyard for, well, pretty much any show, but especially for genre programming. But all that is changing. As we learned several months ago, the show’s episode order was cut roughly in half, from twenty-two down to thirteen sometime after it was renewed for its upcoming sixth season. On top of that, the sixth season was pushed back from the fall start date to a midseason premiere in January. Fans were understandably concerned, and their worst fears were confirmed when the series’ cancellation was officially announced some months later. And yet the show’s producers seem surprisingly at ease with this. Why’s that? After all, they show that they’ve put years of work into is coming to an end! Well, showrunner James Kouf was asked that very question, and his response is […]

The first promo features the cast and crew looking back at the past 5 seasons of the cult favorite show and remembering everything they had been through and enjoyed about the series, and how much they are going to miss working together once it all comes to an end when the final season’s 13 episodes are over, while also discussing the final challenges their characters will face in those last 13 episodes. The second promo is a preview for Season 6 which basically sets up the plot where we last left things at the end of Season 5 after Diana forced Captain Renard to kill Bonaparte to save Nick following the massacre at the loft, which results in Nick going on the run while Renard starts a manhunt for Nick. Check out the full promos for yourself below, and then make sure to catch the Season 6 premiere of ‘Grimm’ on January 6th  in its new timeslot of 8pm/7c win NBC. Season […]
