Disney Announces Delay in Release of ‘Black Panther’ Sequel, ‘Doctor Strange 2’ and More

Disney has announced a delay in the release of multiple Marvel films that are slated to come out over the course of 2022 and 2023. The first major change we see is Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness being delayed about a month and a half, thus pushing the films with a following release date about the same. While this news may seem shocking, sources at Deadline claim this is not the result of any major problems, however, is the result of the fact that”some titles are contending with finishing scenarios while others are in production.” That being said, these delays are only for the films that are scheduled to be released and appear to have no effect on the streaming series at Disney+. The Marvel Cinematic Universe started off pretty white and male-centric, but in recent years, more steps have been taken to ensure greater diversity. Black Panther headlined his own movie, as did Captain Marvel, while the Wasp (Evangeline Lilly) shared the lead in ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’. It has even been revealed that Tessa Thompson‘s Valkyrie is a member of the LGBTQIA community. And she won’t be the only one for long, as Brian Tyree Henry’s Phastos will also be in a same-sex relationship in the upcoming ‘Eternals’. The Marvel movies are an international phenomenon, and that is part of the reason why they will only continue to grow more diverse in the coming years, according to Thompson. Christian Bale is officially playing the villain in ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’, at least according to star Tessa Thompson. During an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Thompson expressed: “Christian Bale is going to play our villain, which is going to be fantastic. I’ve read the script. I can’t tell you much. Lots of exciting text messages exchanged between Natalie and I. We’re going to have fun. Taika is writing [and] directing. Some familiar faces. Some new people coming into the mix.” Indeed, Taika Waititi reinvigorated the ‘Thor’ franchise with ‘Thor: Ragnarok’, following the first two, far more serious movies in the series. There may be some bad news for those who were looking forward to Taika Waititi‘s take on a live-action film version of ‘Akira’. The newly Academy Awarded director was locked in to helm ‘Akira’ for Warner Brothers, but had to postpone those plans when he signed on to return to craft ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ for Disney. Now it seems he may be having second thoughts about ‘Akira’. After winning for Best Adapted Screenplay for ‘Jojo Rabbit’, Waititi sat down for a lengthy interview with Variety, and among the topics that came up was ‘Akira’. Here’s what he had to say: “The whole thing went on hold. We had to keep pushing the dates, and it encroached on the Thor dates, which were immovable. Looks like fans are getting a crossover they never thought they’d see — the Dark Knight in a Marvel movie! Christian Bale, who starred in Christopher Nolan’s ‘Dark Knight’ trilogy, is in talks to return to the comic book genre in Taika Waititi‘s ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’. His role is being kept secret, but with a star of this calibre, it’s sure to be a big one. Waititi himself is a veteran of the DC movie franchises, having portrayed Thomas Kalmaku, Hal Jordan’s roommate in ‘Green Lantern’. Speaking of ‘Green Lantern’, Ryan Reynolds played the titular hero before playing a Marvel character in ‘Deadpool’, but that was under 20th Century Fox, prior to Disney’s purchase of the studio. Studios have been attempting to adapt the seminal manga/anime ‘Akira’ into live-action for decades, and it looked as though Warner Brothers was actually going to make it happen, with superstar director Taika Waititi. But in July, it was announced that ‘Akira’ had been put on indefinite hold. At SDCC, it was announced that Waititi was returning to Marvel Studios to write and helm ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’. There were few jaw-droppers at SDCC this year as big as the revelation that Natalie Portman would not only be returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the role of Jane Foster, but that Jane would become the new female Thor, just as she did in the comics, and would co-headline the next ‘Thor’ movie, ‘Love and Thunder’. Portman has publicly expressed her dislike for making the ‘Thor’ movies (similarly to the way she felt about the ‘Star Wars’ prequels). She very clearly refused to appear in supporting roles in other Marvel entries, like the ‘Avengers’ flicks. (Stellan Skarsgård’s Erik Selvig was given the supporting role. Once it was announced that Natalie Portman would become Thor in the upcoming ‘Thor: Love and Thunder‘ there were a ton of questions as to what direction the film would take. Director Taika Waititi let fans previously know that there would be 2 Thors in the movie and now is making clear who exactly the star of the upcoming Marvel Studios film will be. With a new Thor in the picture, Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie having to build a new Asgard, and the original Thor joining the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy,’ it could easily feel like Chris Hemsworth’s character wouldn’t be front and center in the film. Tessa Thompson‘s Valkyrie is confirmed to be a lesbian, and in ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ this new King of Asgard will be seeking her Queen. It has been rumored for a while that Marvel’s upcoming ‘Eternals’ would also feature an LGBTQ character, and now Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has confirmed that this character is male, although he didn’t get into specifics. ‘Eternals’ stars Richard Madden as the strapping Ikaris. At this year’s San Diego Comic-Con we learned that the fourth Thor film would introduce Natalie Portman‘s Jane Foster as Thor! Many fans were worried this could mean that Chris Hemsworth‘s Thor Odinson would somehow be losing his power or status in ‘Thor: Love And Thunder’ but that doesn’t seem to be the case. Director Taika Waititi was asked about the situation at this year’s D23 Expo, and while he didn’t go into details on the plot, he did shed some light on the situation when asked about it by Entertainment Tonight: “[She’s] a Thor. There’s still the other Thor, the original Thor [played by Hemsworth]. She’s not called Female Thor. In the comics, she’s called the Mighty Thor. It comes from that comic run. I couldn’t be more happy and excited.” It sounds as if Foster won’t be replacing Odinson but joining him.
