For years, WWE fans have been referring to John Cena as “Super Cena” due to the way that he’s seemingly unbeatable no matter who he faces. But based on a new rumor, it looks like the former WWE World Champion will be entering a world filled with actual superheroes.
According to Cosmic Book News, the WWE Superstar is set to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe next year alongside Chris Hemsworth’s God of Thunder in ‘Thor: Ragnarok’. Although, before you start thinking about whichever super muscular character the professional wrestler could play, the site says that Cena will actually be playing himself. While no specifics are known as of yet, the theory is that Jeff Goldblum has something to do with this.
As we’ve previously learned, Taika Waititi’s upcoming Phase Three film is set to borrow some elements of the acclaimed ‘Planet Hulk’ storyline, which finds Bruce Banner’s gamma-radiated alter ego fighting various gladiators in an arena. But with Goldblum playing The Grandmaster (who has a penchant for games), elements of Greg Pak’s acclaimed comic arc may be mixed with the ‘Contest of Champions’ premise that would see the ‘Jurassic Park’ star’s Elder of the Universe pluck great champions from across the universe to do battle against each other. Considering that Cena is a 15-time world champion in the WWE, he might fall under the category of great (depending on who you ask).
Whether it’s a cameo appearance as himself or a more substantial role, Cena could be an excellent addition to the cast. The Leader of the Cenation has had some breakout comedic roles in major films recently like ‘Trainwreck’ and ‘Sisters’ after starring in a number of straight-to-DVD WWE Studios productions like ‘The Marine’ and ’12 Rounds’. He’s even co-starred in movies featuring The Flintstones and Scooby-Doo. So despite what you may think of him as a wrestler, there’s a pretty good chance that he steals a few scenes away from Thor and Hulk if this report turns out to be true. I mean, just imagine him trying to lift a Kree or Sakaaran warrior up on his shoulders for an Attitude Adjustment. Or better yet, if he tries to give the Five-Knuckle Shuffle to the Jade Giant. He has faced Brock Lesnar and Big Show before, so he’s not exactly a novice when facing off with big guys in the ring.
What do you think about John Cena joining the cast of ‘Thor: Ragnarok’? Do you think that he’ll shine like fellow WWE alum Batista, who stars as Drax the Destroyer in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’? And would he appear with his meme-tastic theme music? Or would you rather see the Doctor of Thuganomics head back to a wrestling ring to prepare for the road to Wrestlemania?
