There is a deeper level to the #MeToo issue in Hollywood as Emily Clark is speaking up about being pressured to appear nude in her scenes in ‘Game of Thrones’ and the struggles she’s endured since to keep her clothes on when filming other projects.
Clarke, who starred as Daenerys Targaryen (aka The Mother of Dragons and Breaker of Chains) on the HBO fantasy series, disclosed on Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast that since her breakout role in ‘Game of Thrones,’ she has become “a lot more savvy about what I’m comfortable with, and what I am OK with doing,” in terms of onscreen nudity.
The Primetime Emmy Award nominated actress recollects having arguments on the sets of other projects where the fights would start with her saying, “‘No, the sheet stays up” and they would counter at her with, ‘You don’t want to disappoint your ‘Game of Thrones’ fans.’
As a no-name actress “fresh from drama school” when she was cast, Clarke also thought back to being asked to do several nude scenes right away during her first season of ‘Game of Thrones.’ “Season 1 was what it was,” she says. “It was a f–k ton of nudity… it was definitely hard.”

Clarke credits co-star Jason Momoa with protecting her during that first year by making sure she had a robe to wear in between takes. She said Momoa, who played her Season 1 lover Khal Drogo, “took care of me, in an environment where I didn’t know I needed to be taken care of… It’s only now that I realize how fortunate I was with that.” (HBO declined to comment for this story.)
Fortunately, the dynamics changed as the show progressed. While Clarke shouldn’t have had to deal with being pressured to appear naked on camera, she was able to gain more power as an actress through her role. She recalls, “As Daenerys built in stature, I had to do less of that stuff, [toward the end of the series]. When I did the last nudity that I did for the show, (which featured Daenerys emerging completely unharmed from a fire in the Season 6 episode “Book of the Stranger“) I was like, ‘I am owning this. This is mine. They’ve asked me to do it, and you know what? I’m f–king game.'”
