What sounds like a casual casting announcement for the still untitled ‘Avengers 4‘ could have massive meaning as we’ve learned that Emma Fuhrmann has just joined the cast as the film as Cassie Lang. That name will sound familiar for fans of ‘Ant-Man’ as it is Scott Lang’s daughter.
If you didn’t make the connection as to why that is important the super geek in me will forgive you as it might not have been instantly apparent.
For reference, in ‘Ant-Man’ and the upcoming ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp‘, Cassie Lang is portrayed by 10-year-old at Abby Ryder Fortson and nowhere near the 16-year-old that Fuhrmann is.
This completely changes the playing field as now we’re dealing with a ton of options for ‘Avengers 4’. We could very well be dealing with a massive time jump into the future and have to come back in time to fix a future problem, or we could see the time gem being used to travel into the future and see young Lang coming back to modern times. (I’m not even going to go into the aspects that Cassie has become a minor superhero by this point in the comics.) While rumors of time travel have been deflected with the inclusion of B.A.R.F., Tony Stark’s “Binarily Augmented Retro-Framing” which allows you to relive moments from your past as therapy, this seems to fly directly in the face of that idea.
What do you think an older Cassie Lang means for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Will we start off with a deadly problem in Earth’s future years after the events of ‘Avengers: Infinity War‘? Could this just be time travel flinging Ant-Man or other Avengers into the future?
