If there was any criticism for ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ last year (mind you, there really was not very much), it was that there were so many heroes from the MCU crammed into one movie that a lot of the Avengers, especially the original roster of Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Black-Widow, and Hawk-Eye, got little to no screen-time at all (Hawk-eye was not even in the movie!). While speaking to ‘Empire’ magazine on the topic, Feige started by pointing out some fans reaction to Captain America’s screen-time in ‘Infinity War:’
“People would point out that that Cap wasn’t in Infinity War a whole lot. And Iron Man didn’t really speak for that last half hour because of what was going on. But those characters, and all of the original six, are very much the focus of Endgame in a very personal and emotional way.”
And while the argument could be made that Thor had a lot to do, and Iron Man had his own narrative (though as Feige says, he barely spoke in the last 30 minutes of the film when all the fighting was going on), Cap, Black-Widow, and Hulk did not do much, with Hulk barely making an appearance at all and leaving the fighting to Bruce Banner.
Hence why it is good to hear ‘Endgame’ will focus on the core six, who it seems were spared mainly so they could be the main heroes of this “final” chapter of the ‘Avengers’ franchise, giving them one last time to shine before their contracts, and their time in the MCU, are over. Especially Captain America, who in the recently released trailer seems to be one who will not simply “let it go” and seems determined to find a way to fix everything that happened. While on the topic of Captain America, co-screenwriter Christopher Markus also stated:
“[Cap’s] been our guy since we started at Marvel. He’s the barometer for the team. You go look for Captain America and if he’s still fighting, you keep fighting. But if he’s sitting on his butt in the dirt, saying, ‘Oh God,’ that really, really means you lost.”
Feige went on to talk about how important that ending was for ‘Infinity War,’ especially for fans who felt the MCU has started to become a bit predictable:
“And that ending, which we had been working on for many years, and I do remember people, on all of the movies we’ve made and I’m sure on many of the movies we’ll make in the future, whenever the good guy wins, which is often — good guy, good woman, good hero wins — they go, ‘Eh, it’s kind of predictable. Good guy wins.’ Well, sometimes that’s fun. But for years I remember thinking, ‘I wonder what they’re going to do when they don’t?’ Because we knew that was coming. And it couldn’t have been better. The reaction was the best. The reaction. Was. The. Best.”
That ending also gave the best reason of all for reuniting the original six Avengers, that there simply were not very many other heroes left to work with.
What are your thoughts on Marvel Studios and their grand plan for ‘Avengers: End Game,’ and their use of the original team? Do you think this will truly be the last hurrah of these six? Are you, like me, expecting to see at least one member of the team die? And if so, who do you have your money on? Feel free to share your theories below!
