Speaking of the Guardians team, however – it’s hard to tell how heavily they will feature in the film, as not only is this not “their story,” but the newest trailer that just dropped really seems to minimize their involvement in the main plot of the film.  This is a stark […]

Here’s the “official” description directly from Marvel: Here it is. ❤️ + ⚡ Marvel Studios’ Thor: Love and Thunder arrives only in theaters July 8. The film finds Thor (Chris Hemsworth) on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced – a quest for inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr […]

Discussing the new picture, Waititi admitted: “It’s so over the top now in the very best way. It makes Ragnarok seem like a really run of the mill, very safe film…this new film feels like we asked a bunch of 10-year-olds what should be in a movie and just said yes to everything… Look up space sharks and that should give you an idea,” Yes, the film will include Marvel’s Space Sharks (also called Starsharks).  But one character that will absolutely NOT be in the film, despite recent rumors, is the Silver Surfer.  The rights to that popular character were previously held […]

A second Ace Comic Con is already scheduled for Chicago in October and that remains on the books, as most are hoping the current COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic will be contained by then. Below is the full statement from the event’s organizers: “ACE Comic Con is an extended family. We feel like we know each one of you personally, and as much as we make you feel welcome into our lives a few times a year, you have been gracious in return. Yesterday, a State of Emergency was called in Massachusetts, and after many hours of consultation with the BCEC, a city-owned facility, it was determined that running the event at its regularly scheduled date/time is not possible due to ‘force majeure.’ We are working with the […]

I can’t tell you much. Lots of exciting text messages exchanged between Natalie and I. We’re going to have fun. Taika is writing [and] directing. Some familiar faces. Some new people coming into the mix.” Indeed, Taika Waititi reinvigorated the ‘Thor’ franchise with ‘Thor: Ragnarok’, following the first two, far more serious movies in the series.  The director recently won his first Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for ‘Jojo Rabbit’.  He will be back to write and direct ‘Love and Thunder’.  He will also lend his voice to rock man Korg, as he has in ‘Ragnarok’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’. Also returning from previous pictures is Natalie Portman, whose Jane Foster has been absent from the MCU since ‘Thor: The Dark World’.  Following the storyline from the comics, she will become a new version of Thor in this sequel.   RELATED:  Taika Waititi Hammers Home Who The Real Star Of ‘Thor: Love And Thunder’ Is […]

RUMOR MILL: ‘Loki’ May Be In For A Bad Time Due To Kang The Conqueror https://sciencefiction.com/2020/02/18/rumor-mill-loki-may-be-in-for-a-bad-time-due-to-kang-the-conqueror/ https://sciencefiction.com/2020/02/18/rumor-mill-loki-may-be-in-for-a-bad-time-due-to-kang-the-conqueror/#disqus_thread Tue, 18 Feb 2020 07:28:04 +0000 https://sciencefiction.com/?p=351210 RUMOR MILL: This information is strictly RUMOR and SPECULATION, so take everything with a grain of salt. If you were hoping that the Marvel Cinematic Superheroes time-mangling began and ended in ‘Avengers: Endgame’, unfortunately, there may be more chronographic shenanigans coming up, specifically on ‘Loki’.  As we saw in ‘Endgame’, thanks to the Avengers’ temporal-muckery, a version of Loki escaped with a version of the Tesseract and it is believed that the upcoming Disney+ ‘Loki’ series will follow that Loki’s exploits.  (Well… I mean, the other Loki’s exploits involve decomposing so…) Marvel scooper, Daniel Ritchman shared via his Patreon that ‘Loki’ will introduce Kang the Conqueror, the time-twisting Avengers foe that has previously been off-limits to the MCU.  In case you didn’t know, Kang is also known as Immortus, Iron Lad, Rama-Tut, Scarlet Centurian, and Victor Timely.  And one of those aliases — specifically Rama-Tut — appeared first in the pages of ‘Fantastic Four’, meaning that all versions of Kang were bundled with the film rights to the ‘FF’, meaning that Fox has had the rights all this time. The Disney+ Marvel commercial that aired during the Super Bowl depicted Loki (Tom Hiddleston) dressed in prisoner garb bearing the logo […]

Super Saturday: ‘The Marvel Super Heroes’ (1966) – The FIRST Marvel Cartoon Ever! https://sciencefiction.com/2020/02/08/super-saturday-the-marvel-super-heroes-1966-the-first-marvel-cartoon-ever/ https://sciencefiction.com/2020/02/08/super-saturday-the-marvel-super-heroes-1966-the-first-marvel-cartoon-ever/#disqus_thread Sat, 08 Feb 2020 15:00:09 +0000 https://sciencefiction.com/?p=346724 Generally speaking, my main focus of Super Saturday is on shows that actually aired on Saturday mornings, but as I plan to cover more Marvel shows, I figured I should start from the very beginning, and it just so happens that the first Marvel cartoon aired on weekday afternoons.  (Actually, I have already covered on Marvel series, ‘Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends’.) Many fans have fond recollections of various Marvel Superhero cartoons from when they were growing up– ‘X-Men’, ‘Spider-Man’, even ‘The Silver Surfer’ has his own series for a while.  But the first excursion of Marvel champions into animation was a truly bizarre footnote. In 1966, Grantray-Lawrence Animation delivered the syndicated package ‘The Marvel Super Heroes’, which aired on weekday afternoons in select cities.  However to call these cartoons “animated” is using the term at its loosest.  The art was xeroxed directly from comic books, just as the scripts were lifted from the word bubbles.  The resulting episodes featured a slap-dash of pencils by the likes of Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, and Don Heck among others.  And while the characters mouths moved and their eyes blinked, there was very little movement otherwise.  An arm here.  A leg there.  Generally, […]

Waititi himself is a veteran of the DC movie franchises, having portrayed Thomas Kalmaku, Hal Jordan’s roommate in ‘Green Lantern’.  Speaking of ‘Green Lantern’, Ryan Reynolds played the titular hero before playing a Marvel character in ‘Deadpool’, but that was under 20th Century Fox, prior to Disney’s purchase of the studio.  Angela Bassett portrayed Amanda Waller in that film, and Queen Ramonda in ‘Black Panther’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’.  And speaking of ‘Endgame’, the Big Bad of the MCU, Josh Brolin/Thanos, also portrayed the DC cowboy antihero in ‘Jonah Hex’.  And just for the heck of it, he also portrayed another Marvel character, Cable in Fox’s ‘Deadpool 2’. Another former Batman, Michael Keaton, who starred in 1989’s ‘Batman’ and 1992’s ‘Batman Returns’, joined the MCU as The Vulture in ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’.  And the most […]

Because it’s what we want. But there were plenty of non-cursed offerings. Here are the ones that stuck with me. This is in no way comprehensive, but films that came to mind without much brain digging. 13 Assassins (2010) I Saw the Devil (2010) Attack the Block (2011) The Raid (2011) The Master (2012) The Avengers (2012) Dredd (2012) Sinister (2012) The Loved Ones (2012) Genre was bigger than ever, with “cape” films being consumed by the masses. As for the sanctity of Marvel movies, I don’t think they need defending. Look to the box office of every year — they’re doing fine. By the way, I did love Ragnarok, Homecoming, and Winter Soldier. Seeing the Avengers assemble was a lifetime in the making, and even though it’s not my favorite, it meant a lot. The […]

Marvel Studios announced its Phase 4 movies and TV series in July at San Diego Comic-Con. Yes, a decade of film-making and the Avengers’ Battle Royale has come to a close. A new generation comes in with fresher ideas and concepts, experiments, renewed diversity and yes, the affirmation of female power. Thor, anyone? Yes, the mantle of Mjolnir has officially been passed to a female! Now, onto the news! Wait, let’s hear it! Have you guessed? According to rumor, Marvel villain Nightmare is set to be the big baddie in both ‘WandaVision‘ and ‘Doctor Strange in The Multiverse of Madness’. Both are currently scheduled for release in 2021.   RELATED:  Benedict Cumberbatch And Elizabeth Olsen Will Star In The Scary PG-13 ‘Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness’   ‘WandaVision’ is set to release as a limited TV series on Disney+ in early 2021. ‘Doctor Strange in The Multiverse of Madness’ is set to release in May 2021. (And all movie fans!) Captain America finally became worthy! Oh wait! He already was. Marvel cinephiles geeked out at the scene in ‘Marvel’s The Avengers: Endgame’ where Captain America finally lifted Mjolnir in an all-out battle against Thanos! Let’s look at the evolution of Captain America from ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’ to ‘Marvel’s The Avengers: Endgame’. This is a three-part story. In our first part, we look at Captain America’s journey as a super-soldier.  In our second part, we look at Captain America’s journey as a superhero. Today, we look at Captain America’s journey as a warrior. ‘Captain America: Civil War’ (2016) For all its success – the movie did perform well with more than $1 billion at the box office and 91 percent Rotten Tomatoes score – ‘Captain America: Civil War is first and foremost a movie about Captain America, not, the Avengers. Following the events of ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron, the Avengers team ends up divided over signing the Sokovia Accords, a form of superhero registration that would make superheroes and the Avengers government employees. Much of the question surrounding the work done by superheroes to protect the peace is around the concept of […]

Unlike the female version of Thor, “Loki, Goddess of Lies” as she is billed in the comics, is the same person as the traditional male Loki, just in the form of a woman.  Initially, he possessed the form of Lady Sif, who was played by Jamie Alexander in the first two Thor movies, and later the Scarlet Witch, whom Elizabeth Olsen portrays in the films.  Obviously, if they are casting a new actor to portray Loki’s female form, they are deviating from the comics.  (But how cool would it have been to bring Jamie Alexander back as the female Loki to face off against Natalie Portman as the female Thor/Jane Foster?)   RELATED:  […]

Apparently, it has to do with the writers of ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ as it sounds like he was a huge fan of what Taika Waititi delivered in the movie. He feels that it was “brilliantly written” and would love to be involved in something which they put together. The actor shared that if he were to return it would only be if: “I understand that some people love that particular film, and some of you actually like Malekith the naughty elf, so that’s only my experience within it. But I know that people love the film and I accept that and I’m careful about it. I’m so diplomatic these days! If it was the guy[s], who wrote the third… I’ll do that.” While death isn’t always permanent in the MCU, we did end up seeing Malekith crushed by his own ship in the final battle he had with the God of Thunder. Even if the writers wanted Malekith to return it feels like Eccleston’s previous comments of working on […]

But in 1981, when NBC saw how popular ‘Super Friends’ was on ABC, the network attempted to jump on the bandwagon with a trio of superhero shows– Filmation’s ‘The Kids Super Power Hour with Shazam!’, Hanna-Barbera’s ‘Space Stars’ (which not only cashed in on the popularity of superheroes, but ‘Star Wars’), and ‘Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends’.  While ‘The Kids […]
