Speaking of the Guardians team, however – it’s hard to tell how heavily they will feature in the film, as not only is this not “their story,” but the newest trailer that just dropped really seems to minimize their involvement in the main plot of the film.  This is a stark […]

Scarlet Witch Unleashes The Magic Of The Darkhold On The Marvel Universe https://sciencefiction.com/2021/08/02/scarlet-witch-unleashes-the-magic-of-the-darkhold-on-the-marvel-universe/ https://sciencefiction.com/2021/08/02/scarlet-witch-unleashes-the-magic-of-the-darkhold-on-the-marvel-universe/#disqus_thread Mon, 02 Aug 2021 20:19:58 +0000 https://sciencefiction.com/?p=355636 The Darkhold has a long and storied history in the Marvel Universe – both in the comics, where it was first introduced back in June 1972 in the pages of Marvel Spotlight #4, and in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, where it has appeared canonically in ‘WandaVision’ and as well as the tangential TV series ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ and ‘Runaways.’ Before we see the book next on-screen – likely in next year’s ‘Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness’ – this Fall, Marvel Comics will feature the dark tome in a series of one-shot special-issue stories, featuring characters from across the pages of the company’s various titles.  Written by long-time comics writer Steve Orlando, the tale will start with the self-titled Darkhold Alpha #1 before moving from character to character via their own special issues. Details of the story are being kept mostly under wraps, but Marvel does tell us that both the Scarlet Witch and Doctor Doom will try (and apparently fail to some degree) to contain the Darkhold from wreaking it’s magical destruction across the Marvel Universe.  The company was kind enough to share the covers to two of the upcoming special issues, Darkhold: Iron Man #1 and Darkhold: Blade #1, as well […]

Spoiler-Free Preview: ‘WandaVision’ https://sciencefiction.com/2021/01/14/spoiler-free-preview-wandavision/ https://sciencefiction.com/2021/01/14/spoiler-free-preview-wandavision/#disqus_thread Thu, 14 Jan 2021 17:01:06 +0000 https://sciencefiction.com/?p=355466 Thanks to the fine folks as Disney+, we were granted early access to the first three episodes of the first-ever MCU TV series, ‘WandaVision.’  This is a spoiler-free over-arching review, as we would never want to intentionally spoil anything for our readers!  You’ll find individual reviews of Episode 1, Episode 2, and Episode 3 here on ScienceFiction.com, as they become available to the public. The first thing that jumps out at the viewer upon engaging with the new series is that this is definitely NOT your typical entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.  It’s no secret that the previews have shown the episodes with a decidedly “classic TV sitcom” type of vibe, and this is the general format that the show follows, with each episode “taking place” in a different chronological sitcom era, progressing forward through time (at least, through the first trio of episodes, anyhow); the first episode is set in a 1950s type of ‘I Love Lucy’ vibe, with episode two wandering into the ‘Bewitched’ feel of the 1960s, and the third episode moves things smoothly into the 1970s, with some of the televised technological advances that came with that era. A unique point of the series is […]

Marvel Is Looking To Oscar Isaac To Be MCU’s Moon Knight https://sciencefiction.com/2020/10/27/marvel-is-looking-to-oscar-isaac-to-be-mcus-moon-knight/ https://sciencefiction.com/2020/10/27/marvel-is-looking-to-oscar-isaac-to-be-mcus-moon-knight/#disqus_thread Tue, 27 Oct 2020 14:30:37 +0000 https://sciencefiction.com/?p=355330 In a new announcement, Deadline is reporting that Oscar Isaac is in negotiations with Disney/Marvel to portray the lead character in a Disney+ TV series ‘Moon Knight.’ The show’s story line will be developed by Jeremy Slater, who will also serve as lead writer for the show; Slater is best known to genre fans as the writer of Netflix’s ‘The Umbrella Academy’ series, in addition to having the dubious honor of being the original writer of the (admittedly heavily rewritten) 2015 ‘Fantastic Four’ and 2017 ‘Death Note’ films. For those unfamiliar with the character of Moon Knight, here’s part of his bio, from the Marvel website: Born to a respectable family, but eschewing its history and beliefs Marc Spector cut his own path through life by becoming a boxer, a Marine, and finally a CIA operative. Disgusted by the organizations practices and hurt by his own brother Randall’s betrayal, Spector ejected whatever morals he still possessed and fell into mercenary work around the globe. During this dark time, he made friends with Jean-Paul “Frenchie” DuChamp, one of the only bright spots in the violent profession of a hired gun. Tiring of overthrowing governments and assassinations, Spector entered into the orbit […]

Created by legendary Marvel Comics powerhouses Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, Kang made his first appearance in 1964 in ‘The Avengers’ comic-book series and has had a long and illustrious career of tormenting pretty much every major Marvel hero and team, including the Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, the Inhumans, and the X-Men.  Here’s the character’s brief description from Wikipedia: Kang the Conqueror is a fictional character appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. The character is most frequently depicted as an opponent of the Avengers. A time-traveling entity, several alternate versions of Kang have appeared throughout Marvel’s titles over the years, including his respective future and past heroic selves, Immortus and Iron Lad. In 2009, Kang was ranked as IGN’s 65th-greatest comic book villain of all time. Starring in the as-yet-untitled […]

‘The New Mutants’ Is Safe From Reshoots https://sciencefiction.com/2020/03/09/the-new-mutants-is-safe-from-reshoots/ https://sciencefiction.com/2020/03/09/the-new-mutants-is-safe-from-reshoots/#disqus_thread Tue, 10 Mar 2020 00:10:51 +0000 https://sciencefiction.com/?p=352210 It has been a long road, but ‘The New Mutants’ is going to see the light of day this year finally. The part horror film and part superhero movie has been on the shelves for a couple of years. Now it is set for release and has an honor rarely seen by modern superhero flicks. Entertainment Weekly discussed the X-Men spin-off with director Josh Boone. ‘The New Mutants’ is pulling off something that we haven’t seen very often. Despite what has been rumored in the press, this film is reshoot-free! However, it was a series of fortunate events that led to this unicorn. The production wrapped just as Disney was beginning the takeover of 20th Century Fox, which stuck the mutant story in a bit of a limbo.   RELATED:  Get To Know The ‘New Mutants’ In 15 New Still Photos   Boone illuminated on the situation: “Everybody said we did reshoots! We’ve never done reshoots. And I’ll tell you this: if there hadn’t been a merger, I’m sure we would’ve done reshoots the same way every movie does pickups. We didn’t even do that because by the time the merger was done and everything was settled, everybody’s older.” OK, […]

We had better get used to it affecting our everyday lives. Yes, even Disney is going to suffer. Even the thought of the man-made possibly being within the vicinity of a major event is grounds for cancellation. The virus won’t be scaring guests away from parks yet, but it is sending journalists and celebrities home early.   RELATED: San Diego Comic-Con Braces For The Impact Of The Coronavirus   Deadline is reporting that a planned massive press event for Disney+ European launch has been scrapped. The presser was going to feature presentations from an unspecified list of guests. The attendees supposedly included Disney executives and “creative heads.” It would be fair to assume that this meant the team behind ‘The Mandalorian’ and the upcoming Marvel series like ‘WandaVision’. We’ll never know for sure now.  Trust me when I say that press events can lead to something similar to convention flu. So, I’d say this was a wise choice from the Mouse when Disney announced the following: “Due to a number of media attendee cancellations and increasing concerns at the prospect of traveling internationally at this time, we have decided to […]

The Next All-New Amazing Marvel Comic Will Be ‘The Marvels’ https://sciencefiction.com/2020/02/12/the-next-all-new-amazing-marvel-comic-will-be-the-marvels/ https://sciencefiction.com/2020/02/12/the-next-all-new-amazing-marvel-comic-will-be-the-marvels/#disqus_thread Wed, 12 Feb 2020 15:03:59 +0000 https://sciencefiction.com/?p=350621 This May, fans of the entire Marvel Universe are in for a treat as writer Kurt Busiek and artist Yildiray Cinar have teamed up to bring ‘The Marvels.’ According to Busiek, fans can look forward to “a smorgasbord of Marvel heroes and history” as this series allows for the ultimate team-up capabilities with every hero and villain at their disposal. The stories will span the entire Marvel era from start to end and can take place in the past or present continuity. Talk about a writer’s playground. Busiek’s initial pitch for the book was “Anyone. Anywhere. Any time.” which is a very evident idea as we learn what is to come. The very first issue will exemplify this concept as Busiek shares it will include “an invasion from orbit, a picnic in Prospect Park, Super Hero sightseeing in Manhattan, the All-Winners Squad in 1947, Reed Richards during his time in military intelligence, cosmic beings beyond space and time,” and more! Not only will it deliver us tales from some of Marvel’s and Earth’s mightiest heroes, but the first issue will also introduce us to two new characters as well. In bringing this concept to life, Busiek shares: “The whole idea of […]

‘New Mutants’ Was Inspired By… ‘Nightmare On Elm Street: Dream Warriors’?! https://sciencefiction.com/2020/02/06/new-mutants-was-inspired-by-nightmare-on-elm-street-dream-warriors/ https://sciencefiction.com/2020/02/06/new-mutants-was-inspired-by-nightmare-on-elm-street-dream-warriors/#disqus_thread Thu, 06 Feb 2020 18:45:43 +0000 https://sciencefiction.com/?p=350238 We knew that ‘New Mutants’ was going to be a horror film and now director Josh Boone has confirmed what inspired his installment in the X-men’ franchise. There were multiple influences involved in bringing the movie to life, but one of the more surprising ones was ‘Nightmare on Elm Street: Dream Warriors.’ According to Boone in an interview with Collider: “I’d say biggest influences for this movie were [One Flew Over the] Cuckoo’s Nest, The Shining and Dream Warriors. I do love Dream Warriors, I loved the first [Nightmare on Elm Street] as well, but this is very much a rubber reality horror movie for the first about 75% of the movie, and then it becomes something else. It follows the logic of those early Wes Craven movies and all that.” As I am a fan of all three films which Boone has listed, I’m eager to see how they could have inspired the final cut of ‘New Mutants.’ Boone is also currently working on developing ‘The Stand’ for CBS All Access and shared that Stephen King’s works were another influence when it came to ‘New Mutants’: “I’m excited about it. [It’s also] Stephen King-y, less in terms of all […]

Now, Marvel has released a synopsis which has given a few new key details for the show. You can read the first official synopsis below! In Marvel Studios’ new series, the mercurial villain Loki (Tom Hiddleston) resumes his role as the God of Mischief in a new series that takes place after the events of Avengers: Endgame. Kate Herron directs, and Michael Waldron is head writer. Debuts on Disney+ next year—2021.     RELATED: RUMOR MILL: ‘Loki’ May Introduce Sera, The First Transgender Marvel Character   While this does take place after ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ it still isn’t clear if this Loki is in the Marvel Cinematic Universe that we’ve been watching for over 20-films or one in an alternate timeline. However, Hiddleston has confirmed that he’s been asked two key questions: “Is Loki really dead and what is Loki doing with that cube? It’s always the cubes. This series will answer both of the questions.” One thing we have learned is that the God of Mischief will likely be up […]

While the God of Lies won’t be the same incarnation that we’ve come to know and love – as this one hasn’t gone through all the events from ‘Thor: The Dark World’, ‘Thor: Ragnarok’, or his death in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ – this version is a Loki who has yet to be redeemed. On top of that, since this will be Loki we saw escape in ‘Endgame, he will be carrying an Infinity Stone at the start of the series. It sounds like the issues he believes which caused fans to stop seeing the films in theaters won’t be present in his movie, but with this being the end of the Fox era, this revelation feels like its too little, too late to make a difference. While I’m excited about what ‘New Mutants’ is bringing to the table, this is going to be hard to really get the push to have audiences check it out – especially since Alice Braga seemed to indicate that no reshoots have occurred to incorporate the film into the MCU.   RELATED: ‘The New Mutants’ Is “Probably The Hardest PG-13 Ever Made” According To Director Josh Boone   As to where Fox went wrong, Boone recently spoke with Screen Rant and shared: “You know, it was originally set, when we did the first couple drafts with Simon Kinberg, who’s our producer, he’s off now making his own X-Men movie, so like, he’s still the producer, but Karen’s here because Simon’s got to make that movie. However, you shouldn’t think that Marvel Studios will allow for anything like this to happen again. I’m glad that they’ve decided to officially make this decision that Stan “The Man” Lee is the only one who is going to have this kind of continuous cameo. Marvel Studios Executive Vice President of Production Victoria Alonso spoke to the Miami Latin News late last year near the tail end of the “We Love You 3000” tour to explain: “Stan Lee is not replaceable. So we will never try. That is the legend, the man, we will never try to replace him. Other people will come around, and then you have someone as phenomenally creative as [Marvel Studios president] Kevin Feige, but there’s only one Stan Lee.” Say what you will about how he conducted his business years back, Lee is an icon for Marvel fans. It was eventually hinted at from his appearance in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2‘ that he either was a Watcher or one of their agents, at least when it came to his onscreen […]

Fox introduced Marsden to the world as Scott Summers in 2000, and the actor reprised the role several times before his final outing in 2014’s ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past.’ Between those films, we also met Tye Sheridan as a younger version of the character in 2016’s ‘X-Men: Apocalypse‘ briefly Tim Pocock also played a younger Cyclops in the movie we’d all like to forget: 2009’s ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine.’ While multiple actors have played the iconic mutant, Marsden is the actor most audiences associate with the role. It seems like a no-brainer that Marvel Studios would want to bring one of the team’s most important X-Men member into the MCU, so with that in mind, Marsden has some great advice to whoever next wears the visor: “The biggest challenge was that, the audience and other actors never being able to see your eyes. Definitely was a handicap in bringing a persona to the character, and an energy to the character. To a character who is also very, by nature, very by-the-books. Kind of a Boy Scout, ‘do the right thing.’ […]
