With what has become of vampires over the past few years, the thought of a darker form of the undead is something quite a few people have been wanting. News of ‘Dracula Untold’ giving us a new origin story with Luke Evans (‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug‘,’Immortals’) in the lead almost sounded like it could be just that as he has to match wits against a bloodthirsty sultan to save his family. A recent interview with Sarah Gadon (‘Antiviral’, ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2‘), however, included a comment that easily crushes those hopes.
When talking about ‘Dracula Untold’, Gadon described the movie as:
“…an action film but it’s also really a fantasy film” Gadon said. “I’d say it’s more of a family fantasy film.” With the original content being both violent and highly sexual that may be surprising to some. She goes on to describe it as “It’s about a family as well” Gadon continued. “It’s going to be a PG-13 film and it is more about the family than it is about sexual angst.”
With the plot revolving around his attempt to rescue his family, that partially makes sense. However, it also feels to be straying quite a bit from the origins of the character. Of course this is well before we see Dracula with Mina Harker who one would assume resembles Gadon’s character, Mirena.
“It’s about their undying love, so I play opposite Luke Evans. It was so much fun to do. Aesthetically it’s such a beautiful film. Ngila Dickson did all of our costumes and she was absolutely incredible.”
Is this the origin of the character that you are looking for or did you want more of the classic dark and seductive vampire that Dracula has often been portrayed as? Share your thoughts below!
