Sony Pictures Entertainment Co-Chairman Amy Pascal recently address investors and dropped a few hints at the studio’s upcoming plans for their relaunched ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ franchise, which has so far already generated $3 billion in revenue.  Obviously, Sony wants to keep the money flowing in for as long as it can.  In addition to next year’s ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’ the studio is already plotting ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 3’ and ‘4’.

Pascal had previously teased that ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 4’ may not even focus on Spider-Man!  In her statement to the investors, she further fanned flames by stating “We are going to access Marvel’s full world of Spider-Man characters, so be on the lookout for new heroes and villains.”

There are a number of ways of interpreting that statement.  The first is, of course, if half a dozen superheroes worked for Marvel with ‘The Avengers’ why not replicate that with some of Spider-Man’s allies and foes?  It’s already been heavily hinted at that ‘The Sinister Six’ will make a cinematic appearance.  Could some of Spidey’s allies make their film debuts in the third movie and then come together to battle his worst foes combined?  That sounds like a sound plan and splitting it into four movies makes it sound more organic and logistically accomplish-able.

Her statement also hints that Sony is looking to movie beyond replicating Sam Raimi’s villains, The Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, Venom, Sandman and Hobgobin (kind of).  Spidey does have a deep cast of foes to pull from, including big names like The Scorpion, Kraven The Hunter, The Beetle, The Chameleon, The Shocker and Mysterio.  As well as the Kangaroo, The Spot, Big Wheel and Styx and Stone.  (Don’t know any of these guys?  GOOD!)  Already the three villains used, The Lizard, Electro and The Rhino are fresh characters that Raimi didn’t use, although with Norman Osborn coming on board, it’s probably guaranteed that Green Goblin will eventually appear.

But what of these “new heroes”?  Spider-Man’s most famous “Amazing Friends” are Fire-Star, Iceman and The Human Torch, none of which would be available to Sony.  Fire-Star’s rights aren’t clear.  She’s a mutant, but was never an X-Man, but she may still be lumped in with their available mutants.  But Iceman and the Human Torch are for sure 20th Centrury Fox properties.  Who does that leave?  Well, more on that later.
