‘Star Trek: Discovery’ will celebrate its one-year anniversary this week! Since its premiere on CBS All-Access, fans have been introduced to a new ship and a new crew, and the series has been met with both praise and criticism from the ‘Trek’ fandom.
While the second season of ‘Discovery’ won’t start until early next year, fans can stay connected to the crew with four stand-alone short films called ‘Star Trek: Short Treks’ that will be released starting on October 4. The trailer for the first of the mini-movies, called ‘Runaway’ has been released and features Ensign Tilly (Mary Wiseman), as she encounters an unexpected visitor in need of help.
The short was directed by Maja Vrvilo, and it was written by Jenny Lumet and Alex Kurtzman. Kurtzman also serves as the co-creator and showrunner for ‘Discovery.’ Kurtzman described the short films as a way to “deliver closed-ended stories while revealing clues about what’s to come in future ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ episodes. They’ll also introduce audiences to new characters who may inhabit the larger world of ‘Star Trek.’”
The second season of ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ comes from CBS Television Studios in association with Secret Hideout, Roddenberry Entertainment, and Living Dead Guy Productions
The upcoming short ‘Trek’ films run about 10-15 minutes in length and feature Craft (a new character played by Aldis Hodge), Saru (Doug Jones) and Harry Mudd (Rainn Wilson, who also will direct his installment in the series).
