The Hollywood Reporter announced that Warner Bros has bought the rights to the popular indie horror game series ‘Five Night At Freddy’s’ and have already taken the beginning steps to bring it to the big screen.
The movie will be produced by Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment, who has been a producer for ‘Run All Night’ as well as the upcoming ‘Poltergeist’ remake, and Seth Grahame-Smith and David Katzenberg of KatzSmith Productions, most known for developing a ‘Beetlejuice’ sequel. The three are also producing Cary Fukunaga’s remake of Stephen King’s ‘It.’ A writer for the project has not been announced.
“The story really lends itself to being a movie, and it taps into a largely unexplored niche of horror that a lot of people will be able to relate to,” said Scott Cawthon, the game’s developer.
‘Five Nights At Freddy’s’ is set in a nightmare-Chuck-E-Cheese called Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza where every night the murderous animatronics wake up to play. In the game, the player is the night security guard who must survive five nights without letting the animatronics sneak in and kill him while also not using up all of the power in the building to keep them out. The game’s simplistic but challenging mechanics as well as its reliance on jump scares made it not just a popular game to play, but also great Youtube ‘lets play’ material, making this initially small indie game into a hugely successful and popular franchise that caught Warner Bros’s attention.
Grahame-Smith said: “We’re looking forward to working with Scott to make an insane, terrifying and weirdly adorable movie.” Hopefully this will keep the ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s’ movie a faithful adaption of the original game.
‘Five Nights At Freddy’s’, which has two sequels, is available for Windows PCs through Steam as well as on iOS and Andriod devices. Warner Bros also has a ‘Minecraft’ film underway.
