When we last saw Daisy Ridley’s Rey in ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’, she was handing a lightsaber that initially belonged to Anakin Skywalker to the newly found Luke Skywalker. However, it appears that the Jedi Master won’t be taking back the family heirloom from the former scavenger from Jakku.
The latest episode of The Star Wars Show on YouTube revealed that the lightsaber that called out to Rey in the basement of Maz Kanata’s castle will officially belong to the heroine in ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’. The hosts shared an excerpt from the upcoming ‘Star Wars: A New Hope’ 40th anniversary issue of Vanity Fair that features an interview with Pablo Hidalgo of the Lucasfilm Story Group. In the quote, Hidalgo notes that the ownership of the iconic blue-bladed weapon has indeed been passed on from the man who would come to be known as Darth Vader:
“Either way, the blade is no longer considered Anakin’s lightsaber by the Lucasfilm marketing department. It has now been officially dubbed ‘Rey’s’.”
At this point, Rey and the saber have been fairly well acquainted. In addition to feeling a connection with the weapon, she wielded it in a battle with Kylo Ren, who is no doubt a little bit upset that his grandfather’s lightsaber is in the possession of someone other than himself. But more interestingly, there is mostly likely an interesting thematic and narrative reason for Rey ending up with this lightsaber. While we may have to wait until the Christmas season to unwrap that present, feel free to speculate what this means in the comments below.
‘Star Wars: Episode VIII’ directed by Rian Johnson hits theaters on December 15th, 2017.
