Before his daughter’s tragic passing, Zach Snyder was busy laying the building blocks for more of DC’s cinematic universe and one scene that was cut from ‘Justice League’ introduced us to The Atom. Actually, it introduced us to Orino Lee (‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi,’ ‘Tyrant’) playing Ryan Choi who would have potentially been either an awesome Easter Egg or, had things worked out a little different, ended up playing the hero on the big screen.
This inclusion was recently discovered by eagle-eyed fans who noticed the hero’s name show up on the side of a computer screen. At the time it seemed like just a cool Easter Egg though recently another fan shared a promotional picture of when Silas was at S.T.A.R. Labs and standing next to an unnamed Asian character played by Lee. When Joss Whedon made his own cut of the film, the scene was left on the cutting room floor but Snyder has now confirmed that this was meant to be the future hero, The Atom.
For those unfamiliar with Ryan Choi, he was introduced in 2006 and is the fourth person to take on the identity of The Atom. He wore the mantle well after the Golden Age version which was Al Pratt, the most well-known take of Ray Palmer, and Adam Cray. When Ray vanished, Ryan was offered his teaching position and ended up stumbling upon Ray’s belt which had given him his powers.
Ryan would continue as The Atom for years until eventually being killed by Deathstroke before his resurgence in DC Rebirth. It isn’t clear if Ryan was ever meant to be more than just an Easter Egg in ‘Justice League’ or if they had a plan to launch a movie featuring him down the line as well.
