It is believed that Gwyneth Paltrow‘s Pepper Potts will adopt her armored identity of Rescue in ‘Avengers: Endgame’, a transition that comic fans have been waiting years to see on the big screen. But it sounds like this will be Pepper’s last hurrah, as Paltrow has declared that she is saying goodbye to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Prior to taking on the role of Tony Starks’ Gal Friday, Paltrow was considered a “serious actor,” having won an Academy Award for her role in ‘Shakespeare in Love’, and having starred in other distinguished projects like ‘The Talented Mr. Ripley’, ‘Great Expectations’, ‘Emma’, ‘Se7en’, and… um, ‘Shallow Hal’. But she stayed far away from big budget blockbusters. But as she revealed, ‘Iron Man’ director Jon Favreau talked her into accepting the role of Pepper and seven movies later, she is ready to depart.
“I mean, I’m a bit old to be in a suit and all that at this point. I feel very lucky that I did it, because I actually got talked into it. I was friends with Jon Favreau. It was such a wonderful experience making the first ‘Iron Man’ and then to watch how important it has become to fans.”
‘Avengers: Endgame’ may not be the absolute last time that fans get to see Pepper. Paltrow says that she would be more than happy to come back in a much more limited capacity for future installments if needed.
“I feel honored to be a part of something that people are so passionate about. Of course, if they said, ‘Can you come back for a day?’ I will always be there if they need me.”
Paltrow starred in the very first Marvel Studios film, ‘Iron Man’, and returned for both ‘Iron Man 2’ and ‘Iron Man 3’. She has also popped up in smaller cameos in ‘Avengers’, ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’, and ‘Avengers: Infinity War’, and will be in ‘Endgame’. When last seen, she had accepted Tony Stark’s proposal and the two were engaged when Stark had to run off to battle Thanos and his forces, becoming stranded in outer space in the process.
The conversation between Tony and Pepper beforehand hinted that Pepper might have been pregnant at the time, and Paltrow herself let slip a reference to Tony and Pepper having a kid.
Thankfully we don’t have a long wait to find out what becomes of Pepper and the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. ‘Avengers: Endgame’ opens on April 24.
