Joss Whedon gave Hawkeye a bit of backstory in ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’, but he is still the least developed of the ‘Avengers’. Will that change in the upcoming Marvel movies? It seems a bit unlikely. He’s still a guy with a bow and arrows and the movies are getting increasingly most cosmic in scope. But we do know he makes it out of ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ intact and will return in ‘Avengers 4’ and according to the actor that portrays him, Jeremy Renner, he will get a beefed up role in that film, the plot of which remains under wraps.
“We’re doing a lot of really wondrous things that I’ve always wanted to do with this character. I think everyone will be very pleased when they find out what happens.”
Renner has displayed a new haircut (“A haircut is a haircut,” he quipped) and costume– nothing new when it comes to the Marvel movies– and there are rumors that Clint Barton will employ the new identity of Ronin in the films. In the comics, Ronin is a mysterious guise that has been passed around between various characters, including Hawkeye, a martial artist who utilizes swords and nunchucks instead of the traditional bow and arrows.
While Renner didn’t confirm that the screen version of Hawkeye will also undergo that change he did say:
“I can’t get into the theories. I know [Ronin] is in the comics, but otherwise I don’t really know anything about that stuff.”
Is it possible that Clint merely dons a black costume, but doesn’t undergo a full transformation into a different identity? Maybe. But the idea that he finally gets something of a spotlight is promising. And obviously, Renner would be game for a Hawkeye solo film:
“It would be a wonderful thing. Just don’t wait too long! I don’t want to be in my 50s in tights.”
Renner’s Hawkeye will be back in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ on May 4, 2018, and then again in ‘Avengers 4’ on May 3, 2019.
