There were a lot of inventive and immensely creative aspects to ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ that helped make it into the successful, best Animated Picture Academy Award winning (not to mention Golden Globe winning) movie that it is, but one could argue that at the heart of it all is the humor brought out by the amazing voice-cast. One of the more exceptional pieces of the comedic ensemble, of course, was the inclusion of Spider-Ham on the Spidey Team, which worked out as well as it did because the creative team was lucky enough to land comedian John Mulaney as the voice of Spider-Ham. The man’s old school charm and old-timey voice lent itself perfectly to the cartoonish quality of Spider-Ham, and he quickly became a scene stealer despite his limited time on screen in the movie.
Going from a character that few really knew about to a fan favorite that Sony execs are now thinking about spinning off into either his own film or television series is no easy feat, and the combined talents of Mulaney and the creative team both get a lot of credit for how well Spider-Ham works on the screen.
Now, with the release of ‘Into The Spider-Verse’ on digital and home video this month, Sony has released a number of Special Features for the movie (fully knowing the fan demand to see how exactly it all came together), which includes a fun little featurette about how John and Spider-Ham came about, which includes footage of Mulaney recording the voice of the character, as well as speaking about his excitement in playing the role, and explaining the part to his family and friends. It also has producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller, as well as one of the directors, Peter Ramsey, talking about Spider-Ham and the perfect casting of Mulaney in the role, and how he managed to make the most of every moment he was in, and really make the character his own.
Check out the featurette for yourself below, and share your thoughts on your favorite Spider-Ham moment from the movie in the comments!
