While dropping by ‘The Late Show With Stephen Colbert’ this week, ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’ director J.J. Abrams had some interesting news to share with the host and his audience, especially since he knew Colbert is a giant ‘Star Wars’ fan (though clearly not as much as he is a Tolkien fan, but I digress). Most importantly, apparently Abrams and company had officially finished the film just that previous Sunday, meaning the final chapter of the Skywalker saga is officially “in the can” as they say, and ready for that December 20th release. Next up, he shared an interesting story about how Carrie Fisher, who he had only directed in ‘The Force Awakens’ and was being brought back in ‘The Rise of Skywalker’ with unused footage from ‘The Force Awakens,’ had somehow predicted that Abrams would be the one to direct the final chapter of the ‘Star Wars’ saga.

In Abrams’ words:
“I wasn’t supposed to work on this film. She passed away before Last Jedi was released. She wrote this autobiography, The Princess Diarist, and I remember reading in the end, a ‘special thanks to J.J, Abrams for putting up with me twice.’ I had never worked with her before Force Awakens and I wasn’t suppose to direct Episode IX. It was a very Carrie thing to write something like that and to somehow know. It was really strange.”
Had Carrie Fisher somehow always known that JJ Abrams would come back to direct for the final film? Had she been so impressed with his work on ‘The Force Awakens’ that she knew Disney would not pass up the opportunity to work with the man again? Or did she just have some strange intuition that let her know she would be appearing in two Abrams-directed films? Or could the whole thing be a massive coincidence, and Fisher was just being deliberately vague and odd in the message to Abrams, and now it just so happens that she got it right?

We will never really know the answer to that, but I like the idea that she had some knowledge the rest of us did not, even if it did not come from The Force.
