Big news for fans of 20th Century Fox’s ‘X-Men’ movie universe, the man overseeing the continuity of the films, Simon Kinberg, has recently spoken to MTV news and announced that the movies will feature crossovers similar to Disney’s MCU, meaning we will see Gambit and Deadpool appear with the X-Men, and vice-versa. In Kinberg’s words:
“There will be interplay between different characters in different movies…The idea is that we’ve sort of reset the timeline after ‘Days Of Future Past‘ in some ways, and if not erased, certainly allowed for change from ’X1,’ ’2,’ ’3,’ everything from ’Days of Future Past’ forward, 1973, everything we set now becomes canon. So the ‘Gambit’ movie, the ‘Deadpool’ movie, will exist in a world that acknowledges whatever happened in ‘Days Of Future Past’ and moving forward. Doesn’t mean they’ll always interact with those characters, obviously, it’s not like every movie has all the characters, but they all have to exist within the same rules.”
As for how he is keeping track of everything, he claims to have it all formalized in his own filing system:
“I have it on my computer, and I have it sort of tattooed on my brain now too…Nothing external, so that if I get knocked over the head, no one can read it. It’s literally behind my eyelids. But yeah, we have a clear sense of the directions we want to take them in and in my my mind at least, how we could start to cross-pollinate sort of with those characters that have their standalone movies.”
These days it is clearly in the best interest of the franchise and the studio to have the characters exists in the same continuity with cross-over opportunities, as audiences have swarmed to theaters to see team-up movies featuring heroes previously only featured alone (i.e. ‘Avengers,’ ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ and the upcoming ‘Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice’). However, since most of these heroes (minus Deadpool) were all originally on the same team, and have appeared with the team already (Gambit was in ‘X-Men: Origins: Wolverine’) I am not sure putting them together again will have the same excitement as when we finally saw the ‘Avengers’ come together.
What are your thoughts on the X-Men Cinematic Universe? Do you wish they would just give the rights back to Marvel so all the Marvel heroes could appear onscreen together? Or are you content with the X-Men having their own universe to play in? Share your opinions below!
