May the 4th is one of the most revered days in ‘Star Wars’ fandom. It’s widely recognized as a day to celebrate the franchise from a galaxy far, far away. And since it was announced that it would be returning for a brand new trilogy thanks to Walt Disney Pictures, we’ve been getting some pretty special treats from Lucasfilm regarding the future of the series. This year is no different as tons of news pours in for ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’, but I’m sure no one was expecting to hear this. Although, despite how unexpected it is, fans are likely rejoicing over this news.
While speaking with Vanity Fair, whose June issue slated for release as a digital edition on Thursday, May 7 and on newsstands nationwide on Tuesday, May 12 spotlights ‘Episode VII’, director J.J. Abrams mentioned that he has a few ideas about killing ‘Star Wars: The Phantom Menace’ star Jar Jar Binks. Widely hated among the ‘Star Wars’ community, the Gungan was originally meant to be comic relief, but proved to be the most annoying part of the Prequel Trilogy. Many fans have likely dreamt about the character’s demise, but now Abrams is the fan who gets to follow through on those dreams. And though he doesn’t reveal exactly how Jar Jar died, he has a way to let us all know that he’s good and dead:
“I have a thought about putting Jar Jar Binks’s bones in the desert there. I’m serious! Only three people will notice, but they’ll love it.”
The article that features some lovely photos from acclaimed photographer Annie Leibovitz also finds the filmmaker discussing his use of classic, old school puppets and Harrison Ford seamlessly slipping back into the Han Solo persona.
