Pre-D23: A Ms. Marvel Series Is Moving Forward At Disney+

It is expected that Marvel Studios and Disney+ will make an announcement at D23 this weekend that they are officially moving forward with a streaming series featuring ‘Ms. Marvel’.  British comedian Bisha K. Ali will serve as writer and showrunner.  She is currently a staff writer for Hulu’s ‘Four Weddings and a Funeral’, which is produced by Mindy Kaling, who is known to have been working with Marvel on a ‘Ms. Marvel’ project, although its nature was unknown.  It isn’t known at this time whether or not Kaling will be part of this ‘Ms. Marvel’ TV series, but hopefully more details will be provided this weekend.

Ms. Marvel was the original codename used by Carol Danvers, who most of humanity now knows as Captain Marvel, thanks to Brie Larson’s presence in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.  In the comics, after Carol adopted the name Captain Marvel, a superfan adopted her old name– a teenage Pakistani American Muslim named Kamala Khan, who gained powers after exposure to the Terrigen Mists.  (Long story.)  She gained the power to stretch and enlarge her body, something she calls “embiggening.”  Her solo comic won a Hugo Award in 2015.

She has also popped up on several cartoons and video games and was one of the main characters in the ‘Marvel Rising’ initiative, which included cartoons, toys, clothing, and other items targeted at young girls.

Sana Amanat, Stephen Wacker, G. Willow Wilson, Adrian Alphona, and Jamie McKelvie are all credited as her creators.

Some fans hoped that Kamala would appear in ‘Captain Marvel’, but that made no sense, as it was set in 1995, many years before she would have been born.

Seeing as how the stars of the movies, including Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Mackie, Elizabeth Olsen, Jeremy Renner, and Sebastian Stan will star on the other Marvel Disney+ shows, it is entirely possible that Larson will make an appearance on ‘Ms. Marvel’.

Once again, hopefully, more details will emerge this weekend, so check back!
