Though it wasn’t announced as part of Marvel Studios’ Phase Four, we all know that ‘Black Panther 2’ is in the works and that director Ryan Coogler is confirmed to be coming back. After all, the first ‘Black Panther’ is the highest-grossing movie from Marvel Studios featuring a solo lead character, and it has been the most rewarded of any superhero movie, earning three Oscars among other accolades.
Danai Gurira confirmed to MTV that she will return in the followup as General Okoye, leader of Wakanda’s elite all-female Dora Milaje corps. However, that is the extent of her knowledge of the sequel. As she stated:
“Listen, listen… literally, I have no information, that’s the beauty of our conversation right now. Mr. Coogler says, ‘Tell them we’re working hard, and you’re in it.’ That’s all I got for you [laughs].”
In addition to kicking ass in ‘Black Panther’, Gurira’s Okoye has returned for ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’, which just became the highest-grossing movie of all time. Okoye was perhaps the most significant Wakandan left after Thanos’ snap in ‘Infinity War’, which erased Black Panther/King T’Challa, his sister Shuri, and M’Baku, leader of the Jabari Tribe. Her role in ‘Endgame’ was relatively small, but she did drop a line that has some wondering if a certain underwater monarch might be swimming his way into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Rumors have swirled that somehow Michael B. Jordan‘s Killmonger/Erik Stevens would return in ‘Black Panther 2’, despite dying in the first. It appears that Coogler is just now starting on the script, so who knows what he has planned?
Gurira simply replied:
“We all love Michael, we can never get enough Michael B. I mean, you can never get enough Michael B, we all know this.”
Back in January, Entertainment Tonight asked Angela Bassett (Queen Ramonda) if “everyone” would return, and she coyly replied, “I would assume so.”
However, her husband Courtney B. Vance interjected:
“Yes, just go ahead and say it, yes. Everyone will be there. Just yes, yes. Including Michael B, yes.”
So we’ll see if somehow, Killmong returns, even if it’s just in a flashback of some kind.
‘Black Panther 2’ has not yet been officially announced by Marvel Studios, but it will most likely arrive as part of Phase 5, which should kick off in 2022.
