This isn’t further news of the now-defunct television series of ‘The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen’ but an announcement of a full on cinematic reboot. It seems that even with a put pilot order put in for the series that it failed to garner the network’s interest but with a desire to keep the property alive and kicking a new take on the film is currently set to occur. While no announcements for casting have been made as of yet, we do know that John Davis (‘Chronicle‘,’Predators’) is on board to produce the reboot.
The series itself basically has taken characters such as The Invisible Man, Dorian Gray, Captain Nemo, and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde to create a super hero group set in the Victorian Age to fight super villains. The 2003 attempt at the film flopped so badly that some claim it is why Sean Connery ended up retiring from acting.
I strongly suspect that series creator Alan Moore is just as unhappy to hear that this is happening as he was to hear about the television series. Last time the show had come up he mentioned that “When [DC Comics] did the recent Watchmen prequel comics I said all of sorts of deeply offensive things about the modern entertainment industry clearly having no ideas of its own and having to go through dust bins and spittoons in the dead of night to recycle things. The announcement that there is a ‘League of Extraordinary Gentlemen’ television series hasn’t caused me to drastically alter my opinions. Now it seems they are recycling things that have already proven not to work.”
Anyone who follows my usual opinion about reboots knows that I agree with Moore on this point if not other things that he has said about superhero movie fans.
