In many fans’ opinion, last year’s animated ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ is the best Spider-Man movie of all time. The film mashed up different animation styles, that recalled comic book artwork, to convey a never-before-seen on the big screen origin story that connected the Spider-People of various parallel dimensions. ‘Into the Spider-Verse’ won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film, as well as the same from the Golden Globes, BAFTAs, Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films, African-American Film Critics Association, Alliance of Women Film Journalists, Annie Awards, Black Film Critics Circle, Golden Schmoes, Hugo Awards, Kids’ Choice Awards, and other entities. On top of that, ‘Into the Spider-Verse’ raked in $375.54 million at the global box office.

A sequel was a no-brainer, and was announced shortly after ‘Into the Spider-Verse’ opened. Now we know when to expect it, as the film’s official Twitter account announced we can expect it on April 8, 2022.

Yeah, that’s a long way off. But animation takes time. But as we saw earlier this year, the fanbase can get tired of waiting. ‘The LEGO Movie’ was a surprise hit outside of the family audience, but the sequel arrived five years later, and opened with less than half of what the first movie earned in its first weekend. With its 2022 release date, the sequel to ‘Into the Spider-Verse’ will hit theaters four years after the first.

Sony is also working on a spin-off starring Hailee Steinfeld’s Gwen Stacy, which will partner her with Silk and the Jessica Drew version of Spider-Woman. No word on when that will arrive yet. There is also talk of a ‘Spider-Ham’ TV series.
But hopefully the popularity of the ‘Spider-Man’ franchise will give this sequel the bump it needs to overcome “sequel-itis.”
