SPOILER ALERT! This article contains potential SPOILERS for both ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’ AND ‘Avengers 4’, so proceed with caution.
By now, everyone should know to sit through the end credits of every Marvel movie for the extra stinger scene at the end– and yet every time I see one, most of the audience still gets up as soon as the credits roll. Sometimes these extra scenes are just cute throwbacks but other times, there are vital clues to upcoming films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Paul Rudd appeared on ‘Late Night with Seth Myers‘ to promote ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’ which buzzes into theaters this coming weekend and offered a tease as to what the post-credits scene contains.
Honestly, this is just a mild spoiler and it’s something that common sense would dictate would be in the movie at some point, anyway. But the topic arises when Rudd is asked to explain the timeline of ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’ in relation to Marvel’s last mega-hit ‘Avengers: Infinity War’.
“People have asked me about [Ant-Man and The Wasp] and this, I don’t know if I’m supposed to say it but I’ll say it, it happens kind of concurrently. It’s very important because it doesn’t exist in a vacuum. You have to stay through the end because when you see this thing, through those post-credit scenes, there’s mind-blowing stuff that ties into Infinity War.”
Obviously, by now everyone knows that neither Ant-Man, nor Evangeline Lilly‘s Hope van Dyne/The Wasp, appears in ‘Infinity War’. There are a couple of reasons for that. For starters, ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’, like the previous ‘Ant-Man’ is a more lighthearted romp, which would have been hard to swallow following the apparent deaths of half the people on Earth (and beings across the universe). Also, Lilly’s debut as The Wasp was considered too important to simply throw in as a blip in the larger ‘Infinity War’ plot, so this upcoming sequel was deemed to be a better place to showcase that transformation.
It is believed that the Quantum Realm, first glimpsed in ‘Ant-Man’, will play a major role in ‘Avengers 4’. So the post-credit scene could incorporate that. Or it’s possible that we’ll see a repeat of the ‘Infinity War’ stinger, and see some of Scott Lang’s supporting characters get dusted. However, judging from set photos, Lang himself won’t be one of those casualties. Even so, that gives him a greater motivation to get involved in the events of ‘Avengers 4’.
‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’ arrives this weekend on June 6, 2018.
