‘Candyman’s Nia DaCosta Set To Direct ‘Captain Marvel 2’

Tribeca Film Festival award-winner Nia DaCosta has landed the job of helming the sequel to Disney/Marvel Studios’ ‘Captain Marvel’. DaCosta’s latest film is the remake of ‘Candyman’, executive produced by Jordan Peele, the release of which has been delayed until October 16, 2020, due to COVID-19. In 2018, her debut film, ‘Little Woods’, which she financed through Kickstarter, debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival and was awarded the Nora Ephron Award for “excellence in storytelling by a female writer or director.” Beyond that and ‘Candyman’, DaCosta’s only other professional directing job has been on two episodes of the British TV series ‘Top Boy’. And now she’s in the big leagues! DaCosta becomes the first Black woman to direct a Marvel Studios movie, and only the second Black woman to direct any comic book movie, following Gina Prince-Blythewood, who helmed Netflix’s ‘The Old Guard’, which was released just weeks ago. Disney Announces New Release Dates For ‘Black Widow’, ‘Eternals’, ‘Mulan’, ‘Free Guy’, And More

In the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, Disney has overhauled its 2020 release schedule by moving a number of its most highly-anticipated films back. And right now, perhaps the biggest thing Disney has going for it is the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The next movie in this franchise, and the first film from Marvel’s Phase Four, is ‘Black Widow’, which was supposed to open on May 1. But it definitely doesn’t look as though theaters will be open by then, so ‘Black Widow’ has been pushed way back to November 6. That was the original release date for ‘Eternals’. That film has now been pushed to February 12, 2021, and as a result, has shifted the entire slate of Marvel Phase Four movies back. Oh The Inhumanity: Ms. Marvel Series to Re-Introduce Inhumans To The MCU

Once upon a time in the MCU, Marvel Studios had planned to have an ‘Inhumans’ movie released sometime during phase three of their epic cinematic journey. Wanting to take advantage of that, Marvel Television began hinting around at Inhumans in ‘Agents of SHIELD’ Season 2 and onward, using a number of characters and elements from the ‘Inhuman’ comics in their own series, which seemed to ruffle some feathers over at Marvel Studios (or so the old rumors stated). So Marvel Studios canceled the ‘Inhumans’ movie and Marvel Television decided to pick up the project, choosing to do a limited TV Series instead of a movie and having it air on ABC, starting with a two-hour pilot which they would also release in IMAX to get people excited for the series. And it was a massive bust. ‘The Star Wars Holiday Special’ has an infamous reputation– as it should because it is indeed terrible. However, what many may not realize is that while, yes, this special is hard to sit through, it’s actually not that different from the majority of what was on TV during the 1970s. Everything sucked back then. (I mean ‘Hee Haw’ was a top-rated show through the entire decade!) And everybody had a variety show. The Brady Bunch, Donny & Marie Osmond, The Muppets, and of course, the Justice League of America. Makes complete sense, right? Wait, what?! On January 18 and 25, 1979, (consecutive Thursday nights) NBC aired two hour-long specials featuring the heroes and villains on the DC Universe. Almost 40 years before the ‘Legends of Tomorrow’ stormed onto The CW, another team of DC champions blasted into living rooms under the name ‘Legends of the Superheroes’ with the first chapter subtitled ‘The Challenge’ and part two called ‘The Roast’. ‘The Farewell’s Lulu Wang Was Approached To Direct A Marvel Movie (Could It Be ‘Captain Marvel 2’?)

Lulu Wang (‘The Farewell’) took part in a filmmakers round table hosted by The Hollywood Reporter, along with Todd Phillips (‘Joker’), Noah Baumbach (‘Marriage Story’), Fernando Meirelles (‘The Two Popes’), Greta Gerwig (‘Little Women’), and Martin Scorsese (The Irishman), and at one point, the moderator, Stephen Galloway, asked the panel if they’d been approached to helm a movie for Marvel Studios, and Wang raised her hand, before laughing: “I don’t know if I’m supposed to say that.” She did not go into any further details, so it’s unknown when this was, what the project was, or what the outcome of this discussion was. Marvel actively sought a female director for ‘Captain Marvel’, but wound up going with a female/male duo of Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. It was just disclosed that they would not return to direct the sequel and that Marvel was seeking a solo female director to replace them. Directors Anna Boden And Ryan Fleck Won’t Be Back For ‘Captain Marvel 2’

Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, who co-wrote and directed ‘Captain Marvel’ are not returning to helm the sequel. They aren’t leaving the Marvel Cinematic Universe completely, however, as they are in negotiations to possibly direct a Marvel series for Disney+. ‘Captain Marvel 2’ was not announced as part of Marvel’s Phase 4, but after the first movie made over $1 billion, a sequel is guaranteed. Reportedly, Marvel Studios would like a solo female director for ‘CM2’, and the film is being eyed for release in 2022. (Expect more news to arrive later this year, possibly during San Diego Comic-Con or D23.) Since this project is in development, not much is known, but ‘Captain Marvel 2’ will be set in the present, as opposed to the first which was a flashback to the ’90s. Well, we covered the flops of 2019, but recapping the hits is a little easier because there is only one number to look for– how much a movie made. Of course, once you factor in production and advertising budgets, things can change, but for now, let’s look at the movies that made the most this year based purely on ticket sales. Of course, unless you’ve been living in a cave for the last year, you already know what the #1 movie is. But did these others do as well, better, or worse than you thought? Once again, this list is limited to genre films– science fiction, fantasy, and horror. That means that one major hit, Disney’s ‘The Lion King’ has been omitted. It is actually the second-highest-grossing movie of 2019, having earned $1.656 billion. That movie’s omission allowed the #10 movie on this list to slip in. What was it? 10. For the longest time, our Marvel superhero options in theme parks were pretty limited. Universal’s Islands of Adventure gave us a cool Hulk rollercoaster and a sweet Spider-Man ride, but those lack the MCU’s flare. Sure, that’s all because of licensing agreements from over twenty years ago, but we want some interactive Tom Holland Spidey action now! Don’t worry. Disney heard our cries and is set to deliver onto us tidings of colorful leather and spandex. 2020 is set to be the year in which significant changes will be happening all across Disney parks worldwide. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is going to be a substantial factor in that metamorphosis. In the coming twelve months, Disney California Adventure Park will be home to the first phase of Avengers Campus. This new land will be entirely dedicated to the heroes and heroines of the MCU in some exciting ways. The initial E-Ticket attraction will be an interactive Spider-Man ride, which looks to be a combination of the IoA ride and ‘Toy Story Midway Mania.’ On this 3D journey, you’ll assist Spidey web-up his wayward Spider-Bots. What made the 2000 version of ‘Charlie’s Angels’ a success? Was it the star power of the cast? The bombastic action scenes and campy attitude? Nah. It had to be something else, but what? Luckily, the woman behind a newly rebooted franchise, Elizabeth Banks, knows the answer. The Herald Sun via Heroic Hollywood captured an interesting quote from the director of the 2019 ‘Charlie’s Angels’ reboot film. She posits that two of the most successful female-lead action films in recent years were hits because they belonged to a particular genre: “They’ll go and see a comic book movie with Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel because that’s a male genre. So even though those are movies about women, they put them in the context of feeding the larger comic book world, so it’s all about, yes, you’re watching a Wonder Woman movie but we’re setting up three other characters or we’re setting up ‘Justice League.’” Banks was eager to discount the success of ‘Wonder Woman.’ All that love just because it was part of a cinematic universe? Kevin Feige Talks Splitting From Marvel Entertainment And Disney’s Positive Leadership

Changes are coming to the Marvel landscape. About a month ago, it was announced that Kevin Feige has been placed in creative control of all things Marvel– the movies, TV, and even comic books. This comes after Feige helped guide Marvel Studios into the billion-dollar hit-making machine that it is today, with ‘Avengers: Endgame’ clawing its way to become the highest-grossing movie of all time. This, of course, came after Marvel Studios was broken away from Marvel Entertainment whose Isaac Perlmutter was notoriously frugal with budgets and opposed Feige’s vision of diversity. Perlmutter only approved films for ‘Black Panther’ and ‘Captain Marvel’ in exchange for an ‘Inhumans’ movie that would benefit the TV division, where the Inhumans were incorporated into ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ Rather than lose Feige, Disney emancipated the film division, allowing Feige to call his own shots. ‘Black Panther’ and ‘Captain Marvel’ both got made, and went on to gross over $1 billion each, and ‘Black Panther’ became the first comic book movie to be nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars. You’ll Need To Watch The Disney+ Shows To Keep Up With Marvel Movies Going Forward

Disney+ sounded like a great option for MCU superfans because it would be home to several shows based on the films, with the same actors. But now it seems as though fans HAVE to subscribe to Disney+ and watch these programs if they want to continue fully enjoying the theatrical movies. Disney CEO Bob Iger was featured in an in-depth profile in Bloomberg Businessweek, and among the collaborators interviewed was Marvel creative top dog Kevin Feige, who disclosed that ‘WandaVision’ starring Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff, and ‘Loki’ starring Tom Hiddleston will both set up the events of the movie ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’, with Olsen co-starring in that film. While that was already known, it was previously not revealed that ‘Loki’ would also play some part in setting up the second ‘Doctor Strange’ flick. In what looks to be the first major move now that Kevin Feige has been placed in the position of Chief Creative Director of Marvel– over the creative side of all things, comics, TV, and film– ABC’s failed ‘Inhumans’ has (to borrow a term from comics) been retconned out of existence. New actors are being sought to portray the Inhuman Royal Family on the Disney+ series ‘Ms. Marvel’, which is expected to debut in 2022. And some of the actors rumored to be under consideration will make you say “Hmmmm.” The ABC series starred Anson Mount as Black Bolt, Serinda Swan as Medusa, Ken Leung as Karnak, Eme Ikwuakor as Gorgon, Isabelle Cornish as Crystal, and Iwan Rheon as Maximus. In a movie filled with thrills, one of the most exciting sequences in ‘Avengers: Endgame’ occurred when Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) made her splashy entrance into the final battle. After obtaining the Infinity Gauntlet from Spider-Man, she was ready to take on Thanos, but she needed a little help and she got it, from Gamora, Mantis, Nebula, Okoye, Rescue, Scarlet Witch, Shuri, Valkyrie, and the Wasp.
