DaCosta becomes the first Black woman to direct a Marvel Studios movie, and only the second Black woman to direct any comic book movie, following Gina Prince-Blythewood, who helmed Netflix’s ‘The Old Guard’, which was released just weeks ago. Reportedly, DaCosta met with Marvel Studios CEO Kevin Feige over the weekend and it seems he liked what he heard.  She replaces Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, who co-directed the first ‘Captain Marvel’.  That picture grossed over $1 billion worldwide.  The screenplay for the sequel is being penned by Megan McDonnell, a […]

That was the original release date for ‘Eternals’.  That film has now been pushed to February 12, 2021, and as a result, has shifted the entire slate of Marvel Phase Four movies back.  Here are the new dates: ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ – May 7, 2021 ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ – November 5, 2021 ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ – February 18, 2022 Mixed into the report was the announcement of release dates for the first parts of Phase Five– ‘Black Panther 2’ on May 6, 2022, and ‘Captain Marvel 2’ on July 8, 2022. ‘Black Widow’ is believed to be complete and ready […]

Oh The Inhumanity: Ms. Marvel Series to Re-Introduce Inhumans To The MCU https://sciencefiction.com/2020/02/12/oh-the-inhumanity-ms-marvel-series-to-re-introduce-inhumans-to-the-mcu/ https://sciencefiction.com/2020/02/12/oh-the-inhumanity-ms-marvel-series-to-re-introduce-inhumans-to-the-mcu/#disqus_thread Wed, 12 Feb 2020 19:15:20 +0000 https://sciencefiction.com/?p=350740 Once upon a time in the MCU, Marvel Studios had planned to have an ‘Inhumans’ movie released sometime during phase three of their epic cinematic journey. Wanting to take advantage of that, Marvel Television began hinting around at Inhumans in ‘Agents of SHIELD’ Season 2 and onward, using a number of characters and elements from the ‘Inhuman’ comics in their own series, which seemed to ruffle some feathers over at Marvel Studios (or so the old rumors stated). So Marvel Studios canceled the ‘Inhumans’ movie and Marvel Television decided to pick up the project, choosing to do a limited TV Series instead of a movie and having it air on ABC, starting with a two-hour pilot which they would also release in IMAX to get people excited for the series. And it was a massive bust. It became clear they did not have the right direction for the series, they lacked the funds to properly do the complicated VFX necessary for these characters and took every shortcut they could to cut out their powers (i.e. using injuries to null one character’s powers, boots to hide another character’s special legs, and even shaving the head of one of the most famous […]

Wait, what?! On January 18 and 25, 1979, (consecutive Thursday nights) NBC aired two hour-long specials featuring the heroes and villains on the DC Universe.  Almost 40 years before the ‘Legends of Tomorrow’ stormed onto The CW, another team of DC champions blasted into living rooms under the name ‘Legends of the Superheroes’ with the first chapter subtitled ‘The Challenge’ and part two called ‘The Roast’.  The live-action specials were produced by legendary animation house Hanna Barbera, who were responsible for the hit Saturday morning cartoon ‘Super Friends’, which had been airing on ABC starting in 1973.  However, ‘Legends of the Superheroes’ was broadcast on NBC, which […]

Marvel actively sought a female director for ‘Captain Marvel’, but wound up going with a female/male duo of Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck.  It was just disclosed that they would not return to direct the sequel and that Marvel was seeking a solo female director to replace them. They also sought a female for ‘Black Widow’, with Cate Shortland (‘Berlin Syndrome’) landing the gig.  She reportedly beat out Amma Asante (‘Belle’), Kimberly Peirce (‘Carrie’), and Maggie Betts (‘Novitiate’). Another female director is helming the other Marvel Studios film due out this year, ‘Eternals’.  Chloé Zhao (‘The Rider’) […]

Since this project is in development, not much is known, but ‘Captain Marvel 2’ will be set in the present, as opposed to the first which was a flashback to the ’90s.   RELATED:  ‘Captain Marvel’ Directors Had One Cut Scene They Wished Was In The Final Cut   Brie Larson portrays the titular character, also known as former Air Force pilot Carol Danvers, who found herself genetically modified by the warlike Kree alien race.  Following the release of ‘Captain Marvel’, Larson appeared as Danvers in the present in ‘Avengers: Endgame’, although that movie jumped through hoops to sideline […]

We’re the one weekly column right here on ScienceFiction.com where we seek out all of the awesome news you need to know about any announcements and cool happenings in the toy industry and put them all in one easy to find place for you! This week things have been quiet. A little too quiet. With New York Toy Fair 2020 just a few weeks away, it would only make sense that things would go mostly silent on the toy news front. Most of our favorite companies are holding back all of their cool new reveals for the convention itself, which just means we all have to wait a little longer to see all of the neat stuff we will be adding to our collections this year. Still, this week we have some great new items to check out from our friends at Diamond Select Toys, NECA, Super7, Spinmaster, and Mezco! It may not be much, but there is still plenty to be excited about in the Toy News for the week of January 14th, 2020! In Stores Now From Diamond Select Toys Things might be […]

Once again, this list is limited to genre films– science fiction, fantasy, and horror.  That means that one major hit, Disney’s ‘The Lion King’ has been omitted.  It is actually the second-highest-grossing movie of 2019, having earned $1.656 billion.  That movie’s omission allowed the #10 movie on this list to slip in.  What was it? 10. It: Chapter Two Global Gross: $472.1 million ‘It: Chapter One’ became the highest-grossing horror movie of all time, earning over $700M, but the general consensus is that ‘Chapter Two’ fell short, despite director Andy Muschietti returning, along with the original kid cast and Pennywise actor Bill Skarsgård, and a star-studded […]

Universal’s Islands of Adventure gave us a cool Hulk rollercoaster and a sweet Spider-Man ride, but those lack the MCU’s flare. Sure, that’s all because of licensing agreements from over twenty years ago, but we want some interactive Tom Holland Spidey action now! Don’t worry. Disney heard our cries and is set to deliver onto us tidings of colorful leather and spandex. 2020 is set to be the year in which significant changes will be happening all across Disney parks worldwide. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is going to be a substantial factor in that metamorphosis. In the coming twelve months, Disney California Adventure Park will be home to the first phase of Avengers Campus. This new land will be entirely dedicated to the heroes and heroines of the MCU in some exciting ways. The initial E-Ticket attraction will be an interactive Spider-Man ride, which looks to be a combination of the IoA ride and ‘Toy Story Midway Mania.’ On this 3D journey, you’ll assist Spidey web-up his wayward Spider-Bots. Hopefully, this is just part of the ride, and we’ll run into some of the Webhead’s rogues […]

Was it the star power of the cast? The bombastic action scenes and campy attitude? Nah. It had to be something else, but what? Luckily, the woman behind a newly rebooted franchise, Elizabeth Banks, knows the answer. The Herald Sun via Heroic Hollywood captured an interesting quote from the director of the 2019 ‘Charlie’s Angels’ reboot film. She posits that two of the most successful female-lead action films in recent years were hits because they belonged to a particular genre: “They’ll go and see a comic book movie with Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel because that’s a male genre. So even though those are movies about women, they put them in the context of feeding the larger comic book world, so it’s all about, yes, you’re watching a Wonder Woman movie but we’re setting up three other characters or we’re setting up ‘Justice League.’” Banks was eager to discount the success of ‘Wonder Woman.’ All that love just because it was part of a cinematic universe? That argument doesn’t hold much water. ‘Wonder Woman’ was praised while ‘Justice League’ and the ‘Batman V Superman’ prelude were both panned. Critics weren’t […]

Kevin Feige Talks Splitting From Marvel Entertainment And Disney’s Positive Leadership https://sciencefiction.com/2019/11/11/kevin-feige-talks-splitting-from-marvel-entertainment-and-disneys-positive-leadership/ https://sciencefiction.com/2019/11/11/kevin-feige-talks-splitting-from-marvel-entertainment-and-disneys-positive-leadership/#disqus_thread Tue, 12 Nov 2019 00:50:54 +0000 https://sciencefiction.com/?p=342708 Changes are coming to the Marvel landscape.  About a month ago, it was announced that Kevin Feige has been placed in creative control of all things Marvel– the movies, TV, and even comic books.  This comes after Feige helped guide Marvel Studios into the billion-dollar hit-making machine that it is today, with ‘Avengers: Endgame’ clawing its way to become the highest-grossing movie of all time. This, of course, came after Marvel Studios was broken away from Marvel Entertainment whose Isaac Perlmutter was notoriously frugal with budgets and opposed Feige’s vision of diversity.  Perlmutter only approved films for ‘Black Panther’ and ‘Captain Marvel’ in exchange for an ‘Inhumans’ movie that would benefit the TV division, where the Inhumans were incorporated into ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’  Rather than lose Feige, Disney emancipated the film division, allowing Feige to call his own shots.  ‘Black Panther’ and ‘Captain Marvel’ both got made, and went on to gross over $1 billion each, and ‘Black Panther’ became the first comic book movie to be nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars.  The TV division moved ahead with ‘Inhumans’ and it was a disaster.   RELATED:  Kevin Feige Takes Control As Marvel’s New Chief Creative Officer, Will Now […]

While that was already known, it was previously not revealed that ‘Loki’ would also play some part in setting up the second ‘Doctor Strange’ flick.  As Feige admitted: “I’m not sure we’ve actually acknowledged that before, but it does.” Disney+ has sounded like an appealing option, considering that it will offer nearly everything Disney has ever produced, including acquisitions from Lucasfilm LTD and 20th Century Fox, and it will be the exclusive streaming source for the ultra-popular current Marvel and ‘Star Wars’ film franchises.  And its price– […]

In what looks to be the first major move now that Kevin Feige has been placed in the position of Chief Creative Director of Marvel– over the creative side of all things, comics, TV, and film– ABC’s failed ‘Inhumans’ has (to borrow a term from comics) been retconned out of existence.  New actors are being sought to portray the Inhuman Royal Family on the Disney+ series ‘Ms. Marvel’, which is expected to debut in 2022.  And some of the actors rumored to be under consideration will make you say “Hmmmm.” The ABC series starred Anson Mount as Black Bolt, Serinda Swan as Medusa, Ken Leung as Karnak, Eme Ikwuakor as Gorgon, Isabelle Cornish as Crystal, and Iwan Rheon as Maximus.  The series also included Mike Moh as Triton, Sonya Balmores as Auran, and Ellen Woglom as the Inhumans’ human ally, Louise.   RELATED:  Jeph Loeb Hopes The ‘Inhumans’ Can Return On Another Marvel Series   According to GWW, for the role of Black Bolt on ‘Ms. Marvel’, Marvel is allegedly eyeing Vin Diesel.  This is actually a […]

Here is what Larson told Variety: “I will say that a lot of the female cast members from Marvel walked up to Kevin and we were like, ‘We are in this together, we want to do this.  What that means, I have no idea.
