It seems as though filming can resume in the near future, as nations in the European Union are lifting travel bans for US film and television productions.  ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ had been filming in the Czech Republic at the time that coronavirus shutdowns went into effect. Anthony Mackie reprises his role of Sam Wilson/The Falcon, and Sebastian Stan returns as James Buchanan “Bucky” Barnes/The Winter Soldier.  Details about the show’s plot are under wraps, but the show will address the duo’s future after Steve Rogers/Captain America (Chris Evans) passed his shield over to Wilson in ‘Avengers: Endgame’. Also returning from the movies are Daniel Brühl as Helmut Zemo, who we know is adopting a costume more consistent with his comic book appearance, and Emily VanCamp as Sharon Carter, the niece of Cap’s […]

Anthony Mackie Says Marvel Needs More Diversity Behind-The-Cameras https://sciencefiction.com/2020/06/29/anthony-mackie-says-marvel-needs-more-diversity-behind-the-cameras/ https://sciencefiction.com/2020/06/29/anthony-mackie-says-marvel-needs-more-diversity-behind-the-cameras/#disqus_thread Mon, 29 Jun 2020 19:53:43 +0000 https://sciencefiction.com/?p=353780 DisneyOne of the biggest hits in the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe was 2018’s ‘Black Panther’, which grossed $1.347 billion at the box office, as fans declared, “It’s Not A Movie, It’s A Movement!”  And outside of that film, Anthony Mackie has the role of Sam Wilson, a.k.a. The Falcon and possibly the next Captain America, while Don Cheadle portrays War-Machine/James Rhodes.  But even though Mackie is set to co-headline the Disney+ series ‘Falcon & Winter Soldier’, he thinks Marvel Studios and parent company Disney could do a lot more to increase diversity behind the camera. In a dual interview with ‘Snowpiercer’s Daveed Diggs, Mackie lamented: “When ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ comes out, I’m the lead.  When ‘Snowpiercer’ came out, you’re the lead. We have the power and the ability to ask those questions. It really bothered me that I’ve done seven Marvel movies where every producer, every director, every stunt person, every costume designer, every PA, every single person has been white. “We’ve had one Black producer; his name was Nate Moore.  He produced ‘Black Panther.’ But then when you do ‘Black Panther,’ you have a Black director, Black producer, a Black costume designer, a Black stunt choreographer. In the meantime, Sebastian Stan, who co-stars as James Buchanan “Bucky” Barnes, a.k.a the Winter Soldier, is promoting his latest film, the mostly-improvised drama ‘Endings, Beginnings’.  But of course, questions arose regarding ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’, and he offered a few fresh insights into that project. When speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, he was asked whether ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ would retain the same cinematic feel of the movies, or if it was more of a standard TV series, to which he replied that it was a bit of both. “It felt like both. In a lot of ways, it felt like a movie… What I loved about it was that, tonally, it was very much in the same world that ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ […]

A second Ace Comic Con is already scheduled for Chicago in October and that remains on the books, as most are hoping the current COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic will be contained by then. Below is the full statement from the event’s organizers: “ACE Comic Con is an extended family. We feel like we know each one of you personally, and as much as we make you feel welcome into our lives a few times a year, you have been gracious in return. Yesterday, a State of Emergency was called in Massachusetts, and after many hours of consultation with the BCEC, a city-owned facility, it was determined that running the event at its regularly scheduled date/time is not possible due to ‘force majeure.’ We are working with the […]

The majority of the series was filmed in Atlanta, and reportedly the cast and crew were summoned back there from Prague.  Shooting in that country was only supposed to take about a week, so it doesn’t seem as though this portion was that important, and it’s possible that a substitute location can be secured.   RELATED:  ‘The Falcon And The Winter Soldier’ Are Ready To Fly On The Small Screen With A New Synopsis And Photo   Hopefully, things will pan out.  Disney+ previously expected to have ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ up and streaming in August, to be followed by ‘WandaVision’.  The Marvel Studios series were a big selling point of Disney+ in the […]

In ‘Avengers: Endgame’, a now-elderly Steve Rogers bequeathed his shield to Sam Wilson, The Falcon (Anthony Mackie).  And in the comics, The Falcon became Captain America for a time, so fans are anticipating a similar evolution on ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’.  With a new Black Captain America coming into being on this series it would certainly make sense to explore the story of the first Black man to inhabit that role. And, if you’re keeping track, […]

All of which begs the question, what will Doctor Strange (and audiences) encounter when the character has to deal with the ‘Multiverse of Madness’ in his sequel film? The biggest rumor was recently talked about over on the website MCU Cosmic, where they claim we will see versions of MCU characters in these alternate realities, potentially characters like Captain America or Iron Man (or others), just played by different actors since they are not from the prime MCU reality. Of course, that does not necessarily mean those characters will come back to the main reality and replace the characters we know and love, but it is a cool idea to show alternate versions, potentially setting up a future where some event does force those characters to join the MCU prime reality and take […]

It was previously announced that ‘WandaVision’ had been bumped to “late 2020” after originally being slotted for Spring 2021. Now that ‘The Mandalorian’ Season 1 has ended, there is a clear lack of original programming on Disney+ for older subscribers.  ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ and ‘Cassian Andor’ are not expected to arrive until 2021.  It seems as though ‘The Mandalorian’ S2 will also arrive sometime in the fall/winter.  So it looks as though older viewers will have to wait out the majority of the year, but come late summer, there will be a steady parade of shows.  At the very least, there is the new seventh and final season of ‘Star Wars: The Clone Wars’ which arrives on February 21.  Even though it is animated, this series has always had an older fanbase, so at least that’s one thing to […]

Malcolm Spellman developed the show and serves as head writer, while Kari Skogland is set to direct all six episodes.  The cast includes Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson/The Falcon and Sebastian Stan as James Buchanon “Bucky” Barnes/ The Winter Soldier, reprising their roles from the movies.  Also returning from the movies are Emily VanCamp as Sharon Carter/ Agent 13, and Daniel Brühl as bad guy Helmut Zemo.  Wyatt Russell joins the cast as John Walker, also known as the Super Patriot and later the U.S. Agent, while Adepero Oduye, Desmond Chiam, and Miki Ishikawa are known to be part of the cast, although their roles are unknown.  This is expected to be the first Marvel Disney+ series, and is set to debut sometime later this year. According to scooper Daniel Richtman’s Patreon, Disney+’s ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ will either set up or fully introduce The Thunderbolts to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.  Richtman previously spilled that Marvel is working on a ‘Thunderbolts’ project, either a movie or another Disney+ series.  The latter has not been confirmed or denied by Marvel Studios or Disney. But it is true that Daniel Brühl is returning as Zemo on ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’, and he is going to shift closer to the way the character is depicted in the comics.  It was Zemo that formed and led the Thunderbolts when they first appeared in the comics, as a new group of superheroes who stepped in when the Avengers and Fantastic Four went missing.  It wasn’t until the end of their first issue that readers discovered that these were actually the Masters of Evil in disguise.  Conflict arose when some of these villains realized they preferred acting as heroes for real.   RELATED:  RUMOR MILL: Marvel Is In Early Development On ‘Thunderbolts’ As Either A Movie Or Disney+ Series   ‘The Falcon and […]

Hugo Weaving portrayed the villain in ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’, but when the character returned in ‘Infinity War’, he was played by ‘The Walking Dead’s Ross Marquand, a performer noted for his ability to mimic other celebrity voices, including, apparently, that of Weaving.  But it seems that Marvel Studios did approach Weaving, but he declined because they wanted to slash his salary. Speaking to Time Out, he disclosed: “Oh, yeah. I loved playing that character Red Skull – it was a lot of fun. We were all obliged to sign up for […]

Puerto Rico was hit last Tuesday by a 6.4 magnitude earthquake, which appears to be the strongest it has experienced this century.  Then, on Saturday, it was hit once again by another quake that measured 5.9.   RELATED:  ‘The Falcon And The Winter Soldier’ Concept Art Reveals New Costumes For The Featured Characters   Filming of ‘The Flacon and the Winter Soldier’ began in October in Atlanta.  The show is expected to arrive sometime later this year on Disney+.  It’s unclear if this will delay its launch. Once again, this list is limited to genre films– science fiction, fantasy, and horror.  That means that one major hit, Disney’s ‘The Lion King’ has been omitted.  It is actually the second-highest-grossing movie of 2019, having earned $1.656 billion.  That movie’s omission allowed the #10 movie on this list to slip in.  What was it? 10. It: Chapter Two Global Gross: $472.1 million ‘It: Chapter One’ became the highest-grossing horror movie of all time, earning over $700M, but the general consensus is that ‘Chapter Two’ fell short, despite director Andy Muschietti returning, along with the original kid cast and Pennywise actor Bill Skarsgård, and a star-studded […]

Universal’s Islands of Adventure gave us a cool Hulk rollercoaster and a sweet Spider-Man ride, but those lack the MCU’s flare. Sure, that’s all because of licensing agreements from over twenty years ago, but we want some interactive Tom Holland Spidey action now! Don’t worry. Disney heard our cries and is set to deliver onto us tidings of colorful leather and spandex. 2020 is set to be the year in which significant changes will be happening all across Disney parks worldwide. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is going to be a substantial factor in that metamorphosis. In the coming twelve months, Disney California Adventure Park will be home to the first phase of Avengers Campus. This new land will be entirely dedicated to the heroes and heroines of the MCU in some exciting ways. The initial E-Ticket attraction will be an interactive Spider-Man ride, which looks to be a combination of the IoA ride and ‘Toy Story Midway Mania.’ On this 3D journey, you’ll assist Spidey web-up his wayward Spider-Bots. Hopefully, this is just part of the ride, and we’ll run into some of the Webhead’s rogues […]
