When Ridley Scott was returning to the ‘Alien’ franchise fans were thrilled. However, then ‘Prometheus’ and ‘Alien: Covenant‘ happened that all started to change. While Scott is trying to say that the Alien was the problem and he “was ahead of the game” by not wanting to use them anymore and using Michael Fassbender AI as the antagonist instead, fans aren’t in agreement. While artificial intelligence has always played a part in the franchise from Ian Holm in the first outing and Fassbender having played a great part with what he had to work with, that isn’t what most fans are going to see when they head into these movies.
As to where Scott wants to go moving forward?
“We are [going to make another], we are. I think what we have to do is gradually drift away from the alien stuff. People say, ‘You need more alien, you need more face pulling, need more chest bursting,’ so I put a lot of that in Covenant and it fitted nicely. But I think if you go again you need to start finding another solution that’s more interesting. I think AI is becoming much more dangerous and therefore more interesting.”
AI is a pretty terrifying concept was James Cameron had shown us with ‘Terminator’ but I think most of us are looking for something else at this point. If that is the direction Scott wants to go that’s great, but maybe with a new franchise and we can let someone else take the reins on this one.
I mean, it isn’t as if the entire Internet was ablaze at the Neil Blomkamp idea for ‘Aliens 5’ or anything, so surely there is no interest in continuing the franchise but with possibly someone who actually still loves it?
Do you agree with Ridley Scott that Xenomorphs can no longer be scary and we should stop having them in films or is he just no longer the director to tackle this franchise? Would you like to see someone like Blomkamp or another director take the reins? Share your thoughts below!
