Such is the takeaway vibe I got from our advance screening of ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,’ the kickoff for Phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.  Let’s be clear from the get-go: Marvel has been giving us entertaining, high-quality films for a long time now.  Almost 25 years, across dozens of television series, along with short films and literature tie-ins… this juggernaut is no slouch.  Unfortunately, every entry into the series can’t be a home run – and that’s where we need to have some “real talk” about ‘Quantumania.’ The story itself is right in line with what viewers have been given across the over-arching MCU narrative to date: things on Earth appear to be “settling in” a bit post-Blip (although, frustratingly, ‘Quantumania’ still does not reference anything to do with the giant stone Eternal that is now sticking out of the Earth, half-stuck, as shown in the climax of ‘The Eternals,’ with this new film believed to be the 11th property to take place in the MCU timeline set after those events with absolutely zero remarks or tie-ins to it). The story does reference The Blip, of course, as […]

10 ‘Star Trek’ Callbacks From The Premiere Episode Of ‘Picard’ https://sciencefiction.com/2020/01/28/10-star-trek-callbacks-from-the-premiere-episode-of-picard/ https://sciencefiction.com/2020/01/28/10-star-trek-callbacks-from-the-premiere-episode-of-picard/#disqus_thread Tue, 28 Jan 2020 22:53:39 +0000 https://sciencefiction.com/?p=349307 WARNING: Spoilers for “Remembrance,” the first episode of ‘Star Trek: Picard’ lie ahead.  If you haven’t seen the episode yet and do not wish to have any information spoiled for you, the time to stop reading is now!   To say that the first episode of ‘Star Trek: Picard’ was a welcome sight for die-hard Trek fans is a massive understatement.  While much of the fan base has been split on whether they like or dislike the pre-Classic Series-set ‘Star Trek: Discovery,’ the pilot episode of ‘Picard’ brought things back to the far, far future for Trek faithful – in fact, this series is now officially the furthest “in the future,” chronologically speaking, that any series has routinely gone. (I say “routinely” because, of course, random one-off episodes of the various Trek series have ventured further into the future via time travel and the like.) The first episode, “Remembrance,” was filled to the brim with callbacks to the Trek that has come before – specifically, ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation’ and the feature films inhabited by that show’s cast (‘Generations,’ ‘First Contact,’ and ‘Nemesis’) – and even a few scenes from the JJ Abrams-led “reboot” version of Star Trek feature […]

‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’ Restored A Major Legends Character To Continuity https://sciencefiction.com/2018/05/31/solo-star-wars-story-restored-major-legends-character-continuity/ https://sciencefiction.com/2018/05/31/solo-star-wars-story-restored-major-legends-character-continuity/#disqus_thread Thu, 31 May 2018 16:59:45 +0000 http://sciencefiction.com/?p=286527 ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’ is packed with Easter eggs for longtime fans, referencing everything from ‘Splinter of the Mind’s Eye’ to ‘Masters of Teras Kasi’. There were even some that didn’t make the final cut of the film. And if all that wasn’t enough, there some that are quite literally built into the scenery. This particular Easter egg wasn’t directly sourced from the film, but rather from ‘The Art of Solo: A Story’, a tie-in book of production art by Phil Szostak. One section, (excerpted here by Twitter user @tategerber), details the various and sundry artifacts that fill Dryden Vos’s quarters. It’s all interesting stuff, but what really stands out is the description of Vos’s desk which reads as follows: “The central desk, which represents the administrative seat of his power, is a bespoke piece of furniture. The stone base, that Dryden has plundered from the Sith temple of Exar Kun, is made of polished obsidian and decorated with carved hieroglyphs representing spells that protected its former home.” Yep. Exar Kun is back in continuity! In the Legends continuity, Exar Kun was a legendary (if you’ll pardon the expression) Sith Lord, who lived some four thousand years before the […]

‘Avengers: Infinity War’ Promises Deleted Scenes And Easter Eggs Aplenty https://sciencefiction.com/2018/04/18/avengers-infinity-war-promises-deleted-scenes-easter-eggs-aplenty/ https://sciencefiction.com/2018/04/18/avengers-infinity-war-promises-deleted-scenes-easter-eggs-aplenty/#disqus_thread Wed, 18 Apr 2018 21:00:27 +0000 http://sciencefiction.com/?p=282380 There’s still more than a week to go before ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ arrives in theaters, but we’ve already been given an idea of what to expect to find on the film’s home video release. And as befits a film as big (in every sense of the word) as ‘Infinity War’ is shaping up to be, that includes plenty of deleted scenes. This marks a bit of a change for co-directors Joe and Anthony Russo, who previously helmed ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ and ‘Captain America: Civil War’ for Marvel are no stranger to deleted scenes. That’s part and parcel of making movies. But if you’re acquainted with the bonus features on those two films’ home releases, you’ll know that while there are deleted scenes included, there aren’t a ton of them. That’s not a result of Marvel being stingy with their extras, but rather of the Russo brothers’ approach to moviemaking. But the sheer scale of ‘Infinity War’ demanded a somewhat different approach, and with that comes deleted scenes aplenty. As Joe Russo tells Digital Spy: “We were very tight with the scripts on ‘Winter Soldier’ and ‘Civil War’, so there weren’t a lot of extras.  This is a very […]

TV Review: ‘Doctor Who: Thin Ice’ (Series 10, Episode 3) https://sciencefiction.com/2017/04/30/tv-review-doctor-who-thin-ice-series-10-episode-3/ https://sciencefiction.com/2017/04/30/tv-review-doctor-who-thin-ice-series-10-episode-3/#disqus_thread Sun, 30 Apr 2017 16:00:41 +0000 http://sciencefiction.com/?p=248655 Another self-contained adventure awaits viewers this week in “Thin Ice,” the third episode of Twelfth Doctor Peter Capaldi’s “farewell tour.”  What’s the “monster of the week” this time around, and how effective will the team of the Doctor and Bill be in cracking the case?  Read on to find out more! WARNING: Spoilers for this episode of ‘Doctor Who’ lie ahead, obviously.  If you haven’t seen the episode and don’t wish for any of its content to be spoiled for you, the time to turn back is NOW! RECAP: A fairly straightforward episode here, on the whole: picking up immediately where last week’s episode left us off, The Doctor and Bill find themselves deposited at the 1814 “Frost Fair,” the last of the celebrations designed around the freezing of the Thames River in London.  The TARDIS has obviously intentionally brought the pair here – but why?  We don’t have long to wait before finding out: there’s something under the ice that is killing people, and it’s up to our intrepid duo to figure out not only what it is, but why it’s doing so and who else might be involved… OBSERVATIONS: Believe it or don’t, the “Frost Fairs” in London […]

WARNING: Spoilers for this episode of ‘Doctor Who’ lie ahead, obviously.  If you haven’t seen the episode and don’t wish for any of its content to be spoiled for you, the time to turn back is NOW! RECAP: After a “cold” open on an alien world where we are teased with a short scene of humans having some deadly trouble with robots, we open the action in the TARDIS with the doctor and Bill chatting about where they might like to visit; it’s not long before they are interrupted by Nardole, who reminds the Doctor that he’s made a promise not to travel off-world.  The nature of […]

Binding The Universe: New ‘Rogue One’ Featurettes Confirm Several Hidden Easter Eggs https://sciencefiction.com/2017/04/10/binding-the-universe-new-rogue-one-featurettes-confirm-several-hidden-easter-eggs/ https://sciencefiction.com/2017/04/10/binding-the-universe-new-rogue-one-featurettes-confirm-several-hidden-easter-eggs/#disqus_thread Mon, 10 Apr 2017 17:59:47 +0000 http://sciencefiction.com/?p=246528 With the release of ‘Rogue One’ on Blu-Ray and DVD (which if you are anything like me, is difficult to celebrate with the current feud with Disney and Amazon making impossible to pre-order these things in the usual way) it was only a matter of time before many of the ‘Rogue One’ special features made their way online, and luckily for us, two of featurettes recently surfaced which discuss the various Easter Eggs sprinkled into the film. While a lot of the information discussed in the two videos below may be things that hardcore fans have already spotted and revealed on the internet, it is still nice to see Lucasfilm itself confirm these things as Easter Eggs (and confirm they are accurate, such as the “General Syndulla” being mentioned truly being Hera from ‘Star Wars Rebels’). The first video points out more of the obvious Easter Eggs such as the probe droid from ‘The Empire Strikes Back,’ the aforementioned reference to General Syndulla on Yavin 4, and the Dejarik game being played, while the second video points out a few more obscure references such as  the droid unit being the same one that brought BB-8 to life in ‘The Force […]

Spoilers: A Guide To Some Of ‘Batman: Arkham Knight’ Easter Eggs https://sciencefiction.com/2015/07/27/batman-arkham-knight-easter-eggs-spoilers/ https://sciencefiction.com/2015/07/27/batman-arkham-knight-easter-eggs-spoilers/#disqus_thread Mon, 27 Jul 2015 18:00:14 +0000 http://sciencefiction.com/?p=191765 If you have a console, you’re probably among the many people enjoying your ‘Batman: Arkham Knight‘ experience. (PC users are still getting the short end of the stick, since the PC port isn’t fully fixed yet and even the DLC has been delayed on PC.) However, the real question is, how many Easter eggs have you found? The various ‘Batman: Arkham’ games are known for their copious amounts of Easter eggs and references to the rest of the DC universe. ‘Arkham City’ had one Easter egg that hinted at the plot of Arkham Knight that was as creepy as you could hope for. If you’re like me, a combination of a PC gamer and lazy, then IGN.com’s handy guide to ‘Arkham Knight’ Easter eggs will come in handy in helping you find the Easter eggs. Warning, some of the following Easter eggs are spoilers, so if you haven’t played through the game yet and don’t want to get it spoiled for you, you should stop reading now and come back at a later time. ‘Arkham Knight’s’ Easter eggs are mostly along the line of cameo appearances of villains and references to the rest of the DC universe, but there is one Easter egg […]

The Hunt Is On: Peyton Reed Discusses ‘Ant-Man’ Easter Eggs https://sciencefiction.com/2015/07/16/hunt-peyton-reed-discusses-ant-man-easter-eggs/ https://sciencefiction.com/2015/07/16/hunt-peyton-reed-discusses-ant-man-easter-eggs/#disqus_thread Thu, 16 Jul 2015 18:08:28 +0000 http://sciencefiction.com/?p=190905 With ‘Ant-Man‘ hitting theaters tonight, fans are preparing themselves to delve back into the MCU, which not only involves sitting back and enjoying the movie itself, but also keeping an eye out for Easter Eggs that tie the film into the rest of the MCU, as well as its comic roots. Collider recently sat down with Director Peyton Reed, who was kind enough to discuss where we should be looking for these Easter Eggs, without giving away any major plot points (see full video below). #1 – Reed says to keep your eyes open whenever the characters are within Hank Pym’s house: “I think anytime you’re in Hank Pym’s beautiful, Victorian house in San Francisco, you want to look around the room. You might notice certain details that sort of talk abut his history and his experimentation with the Pym particle. There might some miniaturized objects all around the room.” #2 – Try to read the other headlines beside the main one whenever a newspaper is seen: “When newspapers appear on screen, there are a couple newspapers that appear. There’s a main thing when I do an insert of a newspaper that you want to look at for a story. There […]
