Disney has long been on the cutting-edge of design and experimentation in the world of entertainment, and when the company acquired Lucasfilm and the Star Wars IP in 2012, fans got the sense that big things might be coming our way. It didn’t take long to establish that the House of Mouse meant business: their first new film in the franchise, ‘Star Wars: Episode VII: The Force Awakens,’ scored big with critics and audiences alike, proving there was still plenty of gas left in the galaxy far, far away’s tank.
This past weekend during the Star Wars Celebration in London, many exciting pieces of news and announcements about the future of the franchise were made. One in particular that caught our attention was the announcement of a Darth Vader solo film – done in virtual reality so that the viewer will actually become the Dark Lord of the Sith! It sounds so crazy, it just might work.
Lucasfilm will be teaming up with writer David S. Goyer (known to fans for his work on Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy of films, as well as ‘Man of Steel’ and ‘Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice’) and the tech-savvy folks at ILMxLAB to use VR equipment (headphones, goggles, possibly a controller or hand-held device) to become Vader and control his movements. Goyer elaborated a bit during a panel at Celebration:
“When we looked at all the characters, places, and worlds in the Star Wars universe available to us, we asked ourselves: ‘What haven’t we seen before? Who are we curious about?’ Darth Vader is the perfect ambassador to usher us into the ‘Star Wars’ VR universe.”
No major specifics for the project have been given, such as plot details, where in the Star Wars timeline the story will fall, or when the film may be released to audiences. All we know for sure is that the story will be a part of the official Star Wars canon, and that work on the project is underway – two details that should make fans very, very happy.
