Some are already griping online that fans were led to believe that ‘Avengers: Infinity War’, only for the film to climax with the cliffhanger to end all cliffhangers. But now, at long last, ‘Avengers: Endgame’ is almost here and that is definitely the culmination of the first era of Marvel Studios movies. It has ‘Endgame’ in the title!

Except once again, fans have been misled. ‘Endgame’ doesn’t wrap up Marvel Phase 3, or what Kevin Feige calls the “Infinity Saga.” ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ is the true ending. Feige said so himself while making a personal appearance in Shanghai.
As Feige stated at the beginning of the clip, in reference to ‘Far From Home’:
“It’s the end of the third phase. You’re the first one I’ve told that to.”
This wouldn’t be the first time that an unlikely film served as the ending of one of Marvel’s phases. ‘Ant-Man’ capped off Phase Two. And that film was largely self-contained, serving as the origin for Paul Rudd’s pint-sized hero, with only a passing nod to the larger MCU. Of course, that interaction, with The Falcon (Anthony Mackie) set up Ant-Man’s participation in ‘Captain America: Civil War’, a major part of the Marvel puzzle.
‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ was similar, in that its main objective was establishing the MCU version of Peter Parker, a character that had previously appeared in two isolated film series. The presence of both Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) and Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau), not to mention a plot that revolved around Chitauri technology, helped firmly plant Tom Holland’s wall-crawler in the MCU. But overall, ‘Homecoming’ was a self-contained story.

What we’ve seen of ‘Far From Home’ seems to indicate that it will also largely be a solo Spider-Man adventure, but there are connections to a larger shared universe, with the presence of Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders).
And considering that this will be the first picture to follow ‘Endgame’, expect there to be some reference to the events of that film… whatever those are.
So, unfortunately, ‘Endgame’ won’t be the big finale of Marvel’s third phase. But considering that Marvel fans tend to embrace all of its movies, most of the viewers checking out ‘Endgame’ on opening weekend were probably already planning to do the same for ‘Far From Home’ anyway.
‘Avengers: Endgame’ hits theaters on April 26. ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ swings in on July 5.
