So, when the news came down about an upcoming film called ‘Tetris,’ it makes one’s brain start to think of the possibilities: will this be a movie along the same lines as Hasbro’s now-scuttled plans for turning its games into film properties?  Will it be a tale about giant blocky alien ships invading Earth, and the only way for us to defeat them is to get them lined up next to each other so our missiles can make them “disappear?”  (I’d watch that, probably.)  Could it be a horror movie based on an ancient puzzle, and when the pieces align just so, it sends the user into a shadowy nether-realm?  (I’d definitely watch that.) Well, no, that’s all wrong – and probably the furthest thing from our mind is actually the correct answer: ‘Tetris’ will be an espionage-style thriller, telling the true(ish) story of how the game […]

Taron Egerton Will Star In A ‘Tetris’ Movie But It’s Not What You Think https://sciencefiction.com/2020/07/23/taron-egerton-will-star-in-a-tetris-movie-but-its-not-what-you-think/ https://sciencefiction.com/2020/07/23/taron-egerton-will-star-in-a-tetris-movie-but-its-not-what-you-think/#disqus_thread Thu, 23 Jul 2020 14:00:30 +0000 https://sciencefiction.com/?p=354340 Good news!  Taron Egerton has been cast as the lead in a video game movie!  The weird news… it’s ‘Tetris’.  Okay, no, there isn’t going to be a movie based on the famous game of blocks.  Rather, Egerton will portray Henk Rogers, a Dutch video game designer who was responsible for distributing ‘Tetris’ around the world, including bringing it to the Nintendo Gameboy, where the game really took off in the US. The news was delivered by entertainment journalist Baz Bamigboye on Twitter: Breaking: ⁦@TaronEgerton⁩ , ⁦@goldenglobes⁩ winner for ⁦@rocketmanmovie⁩ ,to portray video game designer ⁦@henkrogers⁩ in #Tetris dir by ⁦@jonsbaird⁩ .About Cold War legal skirmishes over ownership of the Tetris game. The #Maxwells were involved! pic.twitter.com/VuWYvRGMuD — Baz Bamigboye (@BazBam) July 16, 2020 ‘Teris’ was invented in 1984 by Russian software engineer Alexey Pajitnov, but because he was an employee of the Soviet government, he was not credited or paid royalties for his creation, which was distributed by the company ELORG.  In 1996, Henk founded The Teris Company and managed to secure the rights to the game, and he split future profits with Pajitnov. I’m sure there’s a lot more to it, and the film could be really interesting in […]

The Pieces Are Falling Into Place For ‘Tetris: The Movie’ https://sciencefiction.com/2016/05/19/pieces-falling-place-tetris-movie/ https://sciencefiction.com/2016/05/19/pieces-falling-place-tetris-movie/#disqus_thread Thu, 19 May 2016 15:00:45 +0000 http://sciencefiction.com/?p=218478 I want to remind you that it isn’t April Fool’s Day while I share that ‘Tetris: The Movie‘ is moving closer to production. The deal came together during the 2016 Cannes Film Festival as a project pitched with an $80 million dollar budget. It will be co-produced by American producer Larry Kasanoff and Threshold Global Studios which is owned by Chinese producer Bruno Wu. The film has actually been in pre-development from Kasanoff since 2013 and now that funding has been acquired will be filmed in China with a primarily Chinese cast. Without giving away details of the plot the initial genre they are sticking the film in is that of a “sci-fi thriller” which will also be the first installment of a trilogy. Kasanoff explains that the film is “not at all what you think; it will be a cool surprise.” No word if the movie is set to just have a release in China or North America as well. I know what you’re thinking. How can they do a video game with such a rich story and complex characters be done justice with just three movies? Yes, this entire concept is absurd. Almost like taking the name ‘World […]

New ‘Pixels’ Featurette Focuses On 80s Video Game Stars https://sciencefiction.com/2015/06/19/new-pixels-featurette-focuses-80s-video-game-stars/ https://sciencefiction.com/2015/06/19/new-pixels-featurette-focuses-80s-video-game-stars/#disqus_thread Sat, 20 Jun 2015 00:07:53 +0000 http://sciencefiction.com/?p=187631 Next month, theaters near you will be plagued by an invasion. Although, this time it won’t be hoards of zombies or flocks of vampires (sparkly or otherwise). No, cinemas will be invaded by classic characters from vintage video games such as ‘Donkey Kong,’ ‘Q*bert,’ ‘Tetris,’ and ‘Centipede’ star in next month’s arcade action comedy ‘Pixels.’ They don’t exactly come in peace either, so it will be up to Adam Sandler to stop them. And before the idea of seeing a new Adam Sandler movie turns you off of the movie, let’s focus on the video game icons appearing in the film. Sony Pictures recently released a new behind the scenes featurette taking a closer look at the different arcade games coming to life in Chris Columbus’ upcoming film. Hear from the director himself along with the cast and crew as they briefly discuss how they worked with Pac Man, Frogger, and the rest of the pixilated part of the production in the video below, followed by the official synopsis of the film: When aliens intercept video feeds of classic arcade games and misinterpret them as a declaration of war, they attack Earth, using the games as models. Knowing that he must employ […]

Well It Worked For Lego… A ‘Tetris’ Movie Is In The Works https://sciencefiction.com/2014/09/30/well-worked-lego-tetris-movie-works/ https://sciencefiction.com/2014/09/30/well-worked-lego-tetris-movie-works/#disqus_thread Tue, 30 Sep 2014 22:00:55 +0000 http://sciencefiction.com/?p=161781 Forget the fact that the game has no actual plot and was basically the reason why you get so many Facebook game requests (since every other mindless time-killing games were spawned from it, ahem ‘Candy Crush’), the classic 80s video game ‘Tetris’ is getting a movie.  Producer Lawrence Kasanoff is seeking to turn this game about falling bricks into “a very big, epic sci-fi movie.” Kasanoff has had experience with bringing video games to the big screen having produced both the ‘Mortal Kombat’ movies.  Then again, ‘Mortal Kombat’ had… y’know PEOPLE in them.  The first ‘Mortal Kombat’ movie was successful, in 1995, grossing $122 million.  (It was 1995.)  The second was less successful, but even so, to this day we all know what ‘Mortal Kombat’ is. Kasanoff did clarify: “This isn’t a movie with a bunch of lines running around the page.  We’re not giving feet to the geometric shapes… Brands are the new stars of Hollywood. We have a story behind ‘Tetris’ which makes it a much more imaginative thing…  We certainly have the canvas for location-based entertainment based on the epicness.  What you [will] see in Tetris is the teeny tip of an iceberg that has intergalactic significance.” […]
