So, when the news came down about an upcoming film called ‘Tetris,’ it makes one’s brain start to think of the possibilities: will this be a movie along the same lines as Hasbro’s now-scuttled plans for turning its games into film properties?  Will it be a tale about giant blocky alien ships invading Earth, and the only way for us to defeat them is to get them lined up next to each other so our missiles can make them “disappear?”  (I’d watch that, probably.)  Could it be a horror movie based on an ancient puzzle, and when the pieces align just so, it sends the user into a shadowy nether-realm?  (I’d definitely watch that.) Well, no, that’s all wrong – and probably the furthest thing from our mind is actually the correct answer: ‘Tetris’ will be an espionage-style thriller, telling the true(ish) story of how the game […]

The news was delivered by entertainment journalist Baz Bamigboye on Twitter: Breaking: ⁦@TaronEgerton⁩ , ⁦@goldenglobes⁩ winner for ⁦@rocketmanmovie⁩ ,to portray video game designer ⁦@henkrogers⁩ in #Tetris dir by ⁦@jonsbaird⁩ .About Cold War legal skirmishes over ownership of the Tetris game. The #Maxwells were involved! pic.twitter.com/VuWYvRGMuD — Baz Bamigboye (@BazBam) July 16, 2020 ‘Teris’ was invented in 1984 by Russian software engineer Alexey Pajitnov, but because he was an employee of the Soviet government, he was not credited or paid royalties for his creation, which was distributed by the company ELORG.  In 1996, Henk founded The Teris Company and managed to secure the rights to the game, and he split future profits with Pajitnov. I’m sure there’s a lot more to it, and the film could be really interesting in […]

Among his upcoming projects is a splashy new film adaptation of ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ to be directed by Greg Berlanti.  Porter will supply the voice for the man-eating plant, Audrey II. And the multi-hyphenate is very excited about the challenge.  As he told Collider: “This was one of the musicals that is from my generation, from the 80s, so I’ve known it, the songs have been my audition songs for years. And I was also in the out-of-town revival tryout before it went to Broadway back in 2002, and I got let go from that so I’ve already played the voice of the plant. And I just approached it from the standpoint of what it truly is; it’s kind of like the Faustian story. It’s kind of […]

A second Ace Comic Con is already scheduled for Chicago in October and that remains on the books, as most are hoping the current COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic will be contained by then. Below is the full statement from the event’s organizers: “ACE Comic Con is an extended family. We feel like we know each one of you personally, and as much as we make you feel welcome into our lives a few times a year, you have been gracious in return. Yesterday, a State of Emergency was called in Massachusetts, and after many hours of consultation with the BCEC, a city-owned facility, it was determined that running the event at its regularly scheduled date/time is not possible due to ‘force majeure.’ We are working with the […]

Warner Bros is the studio behind this update with Berlanti directing and producing along with Marc Platt and Sarah Schechter.  Broadway vet Billy Porter has already signed on to voice Audrey II the killer plant, while it has been reported that Taron Egerton and Scarlett Johansson are close to signing on for the leading roles of Seymour Krelborn and Audrey, respectively. Yes, that means that Captain America and Black Widow will be reuniting and this time, they’ll be a couple, for any Stetasha shippers out there.  The duo previously co-starred in 2004’s ‘The […]

The off-Broadway stage production of ‘Little Shop of Horrors’, with Jonathan Groff in the lead recently wrapped an extended run of sold-out shows. While there is an extensive set of actors attached to the project, this featurette only has time to share why Executive Producer Lisa Henson (‘Dinosaur Train’) as well as actors Natalie Dormer (‘Game of Thrones’), Taron Egerton (‘Kingsman’), Jason Isaacs (‘Star Trek: Discovery’), and Simon Pegg (‘Star Trek’) are eager for the prequel series to be released. Netflix shares this description of the: “It’s time to return to Thra. Watch the cast and creators discuss returning to Jim Henson’s creation almost 40 years later and getting the chance to expand and enrich this already beloved world.” It is hard to imagine that ‘The Dark Crystal’ is so old at this point. Directed by Henson and Frank Oz, it was a masterpiece ahead of its time. While some may argue that the special effects don’t all hold up to today’s standards, they were still quite advanced and helped to tell a fantastic story.   RELATED:  New ‘The Dark […]

Jackson would play the cinematic version of Nick Fury.  (Isn’t that kind of a cheat, though?  Considering that Millar and artist Bryan Hitch intentionally designed their “Ultimate” version of Fury based on Jackson.)  In the second, the Ultimate Fury states “This nose has been smashed more times than Robert Downey Jr.” referring to the actor who has notoriously struggled with substance abuse in the past, once entering the home of a stranger and falling asleep in a bed in one of the children’s rooms. Millar confirmed his psychic ability and tossed out another prediction– that Taron Egerton would play Wolverine in upcoming Marvel Studios films. From 2002. Always remember I’m never wrong. PS Taron Egerton will be the next Wolverine :) https://t.co/6OtsLbnWqu — Mark Millar (@mrmarkmillar) July 15, 2019 (Hang on a sec.  I’m kind of reeling from the fact that ‘The Ultimates’ was published in 2002.  Hoooooo boy!)   RELATED:  Rumors Of Taron Egerton Playing Wolverine Are […]

As far as I’m aware it’s unfounded. I don’t know if I’m quite grisly enough.” But although he doesn’t appear to be in the running just yet, he’s not closed off to the idea. “I mean if the people at Marvel think I am then great, let’s go. But I think there are probably better candidates. But I would love to be involved with that world somewhere.”   RELATED:  Bryan Singer Wouldn’t Allow Comics On Set, Here’s How Hugh Jackman Learned About Wolverine   This is the second time that Egerton has had to shoot down a rumor of him taking on a major franchise role.  In 2016, he had to deflate the hopes of fans that he would play the young Han Solo in ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’, saying: “I’ve heard this […]

Movie Review: ‘Robin Hood’ Completely Misses The Mark https://sciencefiction.com/2018/11/21/movie-review-robin-hood/ https://sciencefiction.com/2018/11/21/movie-review-robin-hood/#disqus_thread Thu, 22 Nov 2018 02:30:33 +0000 http://sciencefiction.com/?p=307530 The latest cinematic retelling of the ‘Robin Hood’ myth from English history starts with a portentous voice warning you to “forget everything you know about Robin Hood. Forget history.” Perhaps a more apt warning has never appeared at the beginning of a movie because this retelling of Robin Hood has nothing to do with the outlaw living in the forest with his band of merry men. It’s an abomination all its own, and if it had been set hundreds of years in the future or on a strange planet with weirdly parallel beings, it would still be bad. For this film, however, the era is the same as in the mythology, but the production team apparently never visited Nottingham because it’s a sprawling city with a huge coal mine and an enormous palace, along with suspended wooden roads above the minimal forested areas. Young Robin of Loxley (Taron Egerton) is master of a Nottingham area manor and flirting with the lovely young Marian (Eve Hewson) when there’s an ominous knock on the door: He’s been drafted to join the King’s army and head overseas to help retake the holy city of Jerusalem ‘from the Moors. It’s the Crusades and one doesn’t […]

We just reported that Ridley Scott’s ‘Alien: Covenant’ had been pushed up to May 19, 2017 from its previous date of August 4, 2017.  This arguably puts the film thicker into the crowded summer movie season, but perhaps Fox is just that confident with what they’ve seen from Scott.  This puts ‘Alien: Covenant’ up against the comedy remake of  ‘Baywatch’ starring Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron, as well as ‘Annabelle 2‘. While, ‘Alien: Covenant’ is getting fast-tracked to theaters, another anticipated sequel, ‘Kingsman: The Golden Circle’ is being delayed.  Instead of its original date of June 16, 2017, this film will now open on October 6, 2017.  Unlike ‘Alien: Covenant’, this move takes this flick, directed by Matthew Vaughn, out of the heated summer season altogether into the typically dead autumn. This switch does, however, put it up against another anticipated sequel, ‘Bladerunner 2049‘, as well as ‘My Little Pony: The Movie’ (but… probably not a lot of overlap in demographics there). ‘Kingsman: […]
