If you ask almost anyone who has ever played a game in the ‘Legend of Zelda‘ franchise, and they’ll tell you that it is one of the greatest video game series of all time. ‘The Legend of Zelda’ is arguably the best game series of all time, and that’s why the recent rumors making their way around the net are such a big deal. Every once in a while, a rumor comes along that sounds almost too good to be true, and for ‘Zelda’ fans, this is certainly one of those times! You may want to take a deep breath and sit down before reading the rest of the this sentence, but The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Netflix is supposedly teaming with Nintendo to create a brand new live action ‘Legend of Zelda’ television series!
This all new television series is rumored to still be in the very early stages of development, but the fact that it’s in development is huge news! Fans have been clamoring for a live action ‘Zelda’ adaptation for years, and even moreso in recent memory since IGN posted a fake trailer for a live action ‘Zelda’ film as an ‘April Fools’ gag a few years back.
During it’s twenty-five-plus years as one of the Nintendo’s biggest selling series, the basic story of the ‘Zelda’ series has revolved around a boy or young man (depending on which game you’re playing) named Link, who has to rescue Princess Zelda (whose legend it is), and save the land of Hyrule (well usually) from the powers of darkness. The game series is based around adventures and puzzle solving in a fantasy themed world full of monsters, magic and swordplay. The word is that this new live action series will combine the family friendly lighthearted tone of the game series with the action and adventure fantasy elements of many of the more recent fantasy adaptations like ‘Game of Thrones‘ or ‘Lord of the Rings’.
This series would mark the second time that ‘Zelda’ has been adapted for television; with the first adaptation having been in the form of a short lived animated series way back in 1989 that only lasted one season and is pretty universally maligned by fans of the game series.
Considering that this series is still in very early stages of development, it is entirely possible that the show still may not come to fruition. Netflix is still apparently looking for a writer to handle further development of the series, so there are really any number of thing that could factor into this show’s premature ending before it even begins. As it stands now, both Netflix and Nintendo have refused to comment on these rumors. We just sort of have to hold onto hope that things all work out in the series favor so that we can finally see a live action adaption of ‘The Legend of Zelda’ make it out to the streaming service. We can only pray that they advertise it with “It’s dangerous to go alone, watch this!”
