Even though ‘Harry Potter’ fever was still high, ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’ came out swinging and toppled the powerful wizard. ‘Captain’ also took out fellow superheroes with an opening box office of $65.8 million. The stars-and-stripes hero slipped past ‘Thor’s $65.7 million opening in addition to beating ‘X-Men: First Class’ $55.1 million and ‘Green Lantern’s $53.2 million to be the top superhero for the summer of 2011. ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows’ may have come in second this past weekend, but that doesn’t mean it took in a small amount of money. ‘Harry’ took in an additional $48 million in its’ second weekend bringing its domestic total to $274 million and its worldwide box office to a staggering $834 million…in just two weekends.
Also still having a good run in theaters is ‘Transformers: Dark of the Moon’. The film took in an additional $12 million bringing its domestic box office to $325 million and its worldwide box office to $882 million. The third film in the franchise is now its top money earner.
