This isn’t the first time that viewers of ‘Gotham’ have been led to believe that cutthroat gangster Fish Mooney (Jada Pinkett-Smith) has been killed. In the past, she’s returned but after being accidentally killed by Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) in Season Three, this is truly the end for Fish according to executive producer John Stephen.
“I’m afraid that’s it. Now, that one was it. At a certain point, you gotta say ‘Definitely.’ People die at a certain point, and that’s the second or third time they die [on Gotham].”
Mooney’s departure opens the door for Oswald Cobblepot/The Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor) to take an even bigger role in running the ‘Gotham’ underworld. Essentially, this allows him to rise to the stature of his mentor, without being afraid of her wrath.
In the meantime, although the show initially focused on Gordon and Cobblepot, anything involving the comic book locale of Gotham City inevitably falls under the daunting shadow of The Batman, even though at this point he doesn’t technically exist yet. But this season, we will see a still-teenage Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) stepping closer to his destiny, donning a black suit of armor (of sorts) courtesy of Lucius Fox with a flowing trench coat in place of the famous scalloped cape he will later adopt. He’s not the only one growing into his predestined role. Selina Kyle (Camren Bicondova) despite still being a girl by some standards, is prowling closer to her role of Catwoman.
It’s unclear how many more seasons ‘Gotham’ will last. The series is expensive to produce and is not a ratings powerhouse. It has a healthy following, but nothing as impassioned as similar shows like The CW’s ‘Arrow’, ‘The Flash’ etc. If this series does end after this upcoming season, it is possible that both Bruce and Selina will embrace their ultimate roles.
This season, ‘Gotham’ shifts over to Wednesday nights at 8pm EST on FOX. The first new episode airs on September 21st.
