While it may seem crazy that ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ has not even hit theaters yet and people are already looking toward the next installment for Spidey. I suppose that is what happens when his first adventure in the MCU is already being given such critical praise, and already being certified Fresh over on Rotten Tomatoes. Of course, Marvel Studios and Sony already have their plans for the character, plans which star Tom Holland seems more than game for, as he seems to really be enjoying his time playing the wall-crawler.
According to an interview Holland recently had with Collider:
“I will be on Spider-Man 2 about mid-July next year. I think the most interesting thing about a young man’s life is his journey from being a boy to a man, and imagine seeing that journey while having superpowers. That’s something I know I’m definitely excited to explore. I know Kevin [Feige] and the rest of the team are very excited to explore.”
Comicbook.com also revealed that aside from the sequel focusing on Peter Parker growing up in a regular way, there may be aspects of his powers that get better. Apparently in ‘Homecoming’ one of his signature abilities, the “spider-sense” will not be featured much (or at all depending on how you read the statement from director Tom Watts) with the idea that in the sequel they may explore the power more in detail as he grows into it. Holland also spoke on the big question everyone always asks about with sequels, namely, who will our hero be squaring off against:
“Villains are obviously the big thing at the moment, but we’ll have to wait and see who we choose. Who they choose.”
Meanwhile, while speaking with the Toronto Sun, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige discussed the longer-term plans for Spidey now that they have him in the MCU:
“We are looking at a five-movie storyline — Civil War, Homecoming, Avengers: Infinity War, untitled Avengers, Homecoming 2 — or whatever we end up calling it — as an amazing five-story journey for Peter Parker. In the way that the events of Civil War directly inform the opening of Homecoming and his state of mind as he goes back to high school, so too will the events of the next two Avengers movies as he continues with high school. This original 22-movie arc ends with the untitled Avengers in May of 2019 and then two months later it will be Peter and Spider-Man that usher us into the aftermath and how things proceed from there.”
