LaKeith Stanfield and Olivia Cooke are in talks to star in a new fairy tale movie for Disney+. The title has not been revealed. Fresh off of delivering last year’s breakout teen romcom ‘To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before’ to Netflix, Susan Johnson will direct this film, from a script by newcomer Cat Vasko, who wrote this as a spec script. It was so well received, that she was hired for the ‘Godzilla Vs. Kong’ writers room.
While the plot is being kept under wraps, Scriptshadow, who reviewed Vasko’s original screenplay, reveals a RUMORED synopsis:
When a prince sets off on a journey with his princess-to-be to lift a spell that’s made her really boring, he discovers a shocking reality about their existence.
It appears that the prince discovers that he and everyone and everything he knows are part of a Grimm’s fairy tale. The tone is described as a “subversive take on fairy tales” and is compared to ‘Shrek’, and ‘Enchanted’, although not in a good way– at least not at first.
In this script, the princess is named Generica, while the prince is named Prescott. Another major character is Winnifred, a “Lady-In-Waiting” who isn’t cut out for courtly life and yearns to head out on adventures. That leads her to accompany Prescott on his journey. While Stanfield is obviously playing Prescott, it’s likely that Cooke is playing Winnifred, not Princess Generica.
Scriptshadow’s review states that the film starts off aping stuff the reader had already seen in ‘Enchanted’ and ‘Shrek’, but before long, things take a fresh turn that redeems the beginning. And keep in mind, this screenplay has probably been revised since then.
Stanfield starred in last year’s critically acclaimed indie ‘Sorry to Bother You’, and is a cast member of Donald Glover’s hit FX series ‘Atlanta’. Cooke portrayed Art3mis/Samantha in last year’s ‘Ready Player One’ and starred in Amazon’s miniseries adaptation ‘Vanity Fair’.
Disney+ launches later this year with plans to roll out original content on a regular basis.
