Last we heard, it sounded as if Jared Leto (‘Suicide Squad’) was in the running to play ‘Bloodshot‘ and thankfully it looks as if Sony Pictures is now eyeing Vin Diesel (‘Guardians of the Galaxy’) instead! While casting is in no way set in stone for the part at this time, it looks like fans of Valiant Entertainment will at least get someone a bit bulkier for the role whose past work seems more in line with how the comic character has been portrayed in recent years. We know that Dave Wilson is set to direct the film based on a script by Eric Heisserer (‘Arrival’) so there is plenty of talent behind the camera, now it looks as if they’re trying to get some in front of it as well.
As to Bloodshot, he’s an ex-contract killer named Angelo Mortalli. When he enters the witness protection program things go south when his government contact sells him out and he ends up being part of a secret program to become the perfect assassin. After his memories are erased he becomes a killer who can regenerate, is stronger, and even better at his job than he was before.
To regain his lost memories he has to go up against both the mob and the police before he eventually has to reconcile with everything he has done in his life. It is that last aspect which is more fitting for what Diesel has to do as it would be similar a non-space version of Riddick.
While there are some aspects that make this sound like the perfect casting choice, some of the charisma which is needed by Bloodshot haven’t been seen from Diesel on the big screen in the past.
It’ll be interesting to see what casting route they go with here.
