Starting its life in comic-book form back in 1977, Marvel’s series told alternate-reality tales about heroes and characters that readers knew well.  The first issue was titled “What if… Spider-Man Joined the Fantastic Four?” and it set the precedent that readers would be seeing, essentially, the early stages of what would eventually become known as The Multiverse. Now that the stories have shifted onto the television screen with the first season of “What If…?,” the tales being told are directly connected to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and its version of classic Marvel characters.  The nine episodes in the inaugural season revolved around tales of alternate versions of The Avengers, Black Panther, Ultron, Doctor Strange, zombies, and more! While the complete list of episodes for Season 2 hasn’t been officially released yet, several leaks claim to outline the entire season.  Items that have been confirmed by Disney include […]

Disney has announced that the second season of its hit TV show ‘The Mandalorian’ will make its debut on October 30th of this year.  The first-ever live-action TV series set in the Star Wars universe, the show follows the exploits of the titular character, a bounty hunter for hire in the post ‘Return of the Jedi’ era who gets more than he bargains for when he discovers that his latest bounty is none other than “The Child,” a youngling from the little-known race made famous by Jedi Master Yoda.  Okay, The Child is 50 years old, but Yoda was over 900 years old when he finally Force-Ghost-ed out so, y’know, it’s all relative. Directly from the House of Mouse, here’s the description of the second season, along with the trailer itself: Today, Disney+ shared the new trailer, key art and new images from the highly anticipated second season of Lucasfilm’s critically acclaimed series, “The Mandalorian.” The Mandalorian and the Child continue their journey, facing enemies and rallying allies as they make their way through […]

Which is ok I suppose, but pacing has been a bit of a problem for many of the Marvel/ Netflix series and episodes like this, where Frank spends a lot of time sitting around a couch eating, talking and watching TV, while other characters explore, and talk, and “shop” (literally in Rachel/ Amy’s case), just feels off, especially with such an action-packed character like Frank Castle. So anyways, here’s the nuts and bolts of these episodes. Frank and Rachel (who we learn is actually named “Amy”) are in New York now, staying with Madani, who basically wants Frank to kill Russo, thus ending her torture, and not just hers. She and Curtis Hoyle (another returning Season 1 character) are both a little unhappy with Frank for not simply killing Russo last season, as what Frank did to him seems pointless now that Russo has no memory of it. The whole thing leaves Madani and […]

Will Burnham Meet Spock On ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Season 2? Sonequa Martin-Green Answers https://sciencefiction.com/2018/05/21/will-burnham-meet-spock-star-trek-discovery-season-2/ https://sciencefiction.com/2018/05/21/will-burnham-meet-spock-star-trek-discovery-season-2/#disqus_thread Mon, 21 May 2018 14:00:27 +0000 http://sciencefiction.com/?p=285476 Following a first season that elated many fans and displeased many others, the final scene of the ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ season finale introduced fans to a slightly updated version of the original U.S.S. Enterprise – and the confirmation that the iconic vessel was indeed under the command of Captain Christopher Pike. Now, as ‘Discovery’ ramps up for production on its second season, fans are naturally wondering about another iconic character that, according to Star Trek canon, is stationed aboard the Enterprise at this point in the timeline: the half-human, half-Vulcan Spock, whom “Discovery” has established is “related” to Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green), the main character of “Discovery.” While the creative team has tried to be coy in their indirect answering of the question, Martin-Green seemed to give a slightly more affirmative answer in a recent interview when asked if the two characters will be meeting this season: “You know, [showrunner] Aaron Harberts, he said after the finale, on ‘After Trek,’ that Season 2 was going to be about that line between science and faith. He also said that there’s going to be a lot of family dynamic. It is the Enterprise in that shot. We all know who is on the […]

Spock Is Coming To ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ https://sciencefiction.com/2018/04/17/spock-coming-star-trek-discovery/ https://sciencefiction.com/2018/04/17/spock-coming-star-trek-discovery/#disqus_thread Tue, 17 Apr 2018 06:00:50 +0000 http://sciencefiction.com/?p=282223 It feels weird saying that the first season of ‘Star Trek: Discovery‘ ended on a cliffhanger. After all, if no further episodes were produced, that season would still leave us with a complete, satisfying story. It certainly wouldn’t be akin to cancelling ‘The Next Generation’ after the first part of ‘The Best of Both Worlds’ or if the last we’d seen of ‘Deep Space Nine’ had gone ‘Call to Arms’. But in closing the season on a meeting between the Discovery and the Enterprise, they’ve nonetheless managed to leave fans on the edge of their seats, especially given the characters we know to be serving aboard the Enterprise at this time. There’s been some teasing of the fans in that regard in recent weeks, with the announcement that Anson Mount has been cast as Captain Pike. But of course, that still leaves an elephant in the room, in the form of a certain half-Vulcan science officer.  But now we’ve learned that Spock will be appearing in the second season of ‘Discovery’, though perhaps not in the way some fans expected when the Enterprise whooshed across their screens earlier this year. The news comes courtesy of ‘Trek’ alumn and ‘Discovery’ director […]

Tig Notaro Reports For Duty On ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ https://sciencefiction.com/2018/04/13/tig-notaro-reports-duty-star-trek-discovery/ https://sciencefiction.com/2018/04/13/tig-notaro-reports-duty-star-trek-discovery/#disqus_thread Fri, 13 Apr 2018 23:30:21 +0000 http://sciencefiction.com/?p=282089   Comedian Tig Notaro has joined the cast of ‘Star Trek: Discovery‘ for the show’s upcoming second season. As reported by Variety, Notaro will be appearing on the series in what the publication describes as a guest starring role, playing Denise Reno, Chief Engineer of the USS Hiawatha. No word yet on how many episodes Notaro will be featured in. This lack of specificity echoes the previous announcement of Anson Mount’s casting. Mount, who has been cast as Captain Christopher Pike, will be making his own debut as the show picks up from its end of season cliffhanger, which saw the Discovery cross paths with the Enterprise under Pike’s command. As with Notaro, there has been no official word on the number of episodes in which Mount will appear, though executive producer Alex Kurtzman has suggested that he may not be a mainstay: “The show is called ‘Discovery’. It’s not ‘Enterprise’. So yes, the Enterprise will play a part of season two but it will absolutely not overshadow Discovery. And I think with the Enterprise’s arrival in the finale we recognize that the audience has a lot of questions about our synchronicity with the original series, which really means our […]

WonderCon 2018: ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Producers Talk Season Two https://sciencefiction.com/2018/03/27/star-trek-discovery-producers-talk-season-two/ https://sciencefiction.com/2018/03/27/star-trek-discovery-producers-talk-season-two/#disqus_thread Tue, 27 Mar 2018 17:02:22 +0000 http://sciencefiction.com/?p=280548 Now that the first season of ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ has wrapped, fans can get back to doing what ‘Star Trek’ itself has always done best: focusing on the future. Of course, the writers of ‘Discovery’ have a bit of a head start on that department. In fact, with production scheduled to begin in April, it’s safe to say that the future has been on their minds for quite some time. And it was at WonderCon this past weekend that the public got some of the biggest teases yet for season two. In addition to several tidbits that were dropped during the convention’s ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ panel, including hints at the introduction of a more familiar uniform design, teasing the possible inclusion of a female same-sex couple, and confirming once again that the show is set in the Prime timeline, co-showrunners Gretchen Berg and Aaron Harberts spoke to TrekMovie regarding the upcoming second season. While they weren’t able to discuss the plot, we can now start filling in the blanks. First and foremost, how many episodes will the second season have? Harberts was able to confirm that the series has been picked up for thirteen episodes in its sophomore year. That’s the […]

But that hiatus is soon coming to an end with the show’s second season due to kick off on HBO in just over a month. And with that premiere date fast approaching, the cast and producers have begun to drop some clues to what fans can expect from the sophomore season. Speaking at SXSW, actor Jeffrey Wright offered some hints of what the season holds for his character, Bernard. Revealed over the course of the season as a host – the sophisticated robots that populate the park – Bernard was last seen being reactivated after having been forced to shoot himself in the head. As you might expect, it’s an experience that will follow him into the second season. Quipping that Bernard has “some health issues,” Wright then explained just what that means for him going forward: “He’s got some cognitive challenges as we enter the first episodes of Season Two and he has additional challenges that come up as he goes on board in terms of him being able […]

‘Jessica Jones’ Showrunner On The Return Of Kilgrave https://sciencefiction.com/2018/03/10/jessica-jones-showrunner-return-kilgrave/ https://sciencefiction.com/2018/03/10/jessica-jones-showrunner-return-kilgrave/#disqus_thread Sat, 10 Mar 2018 20:00:06 +0000 http://sciencefiction.com/?p=278949 As befits a show about a private detective, the lead up to the second season of ‘Jessica Jones’ expertly walked the line of piquing fans’ interest without giving too much away. But one of the things they did give away early in the game – like, “first trailer” early – was the return of Kilgrave. Unforgettably played by David Tennant, Kilgrave met his end in what was perhaps the most cathartic moment of the first season. But given the indelible impact he had on Jessica, it was never out of the realm of possibility that he might someday return, if only in flashbacks and the like. But how would he return? And why? The more intrepid (and blessed with free time) among you already know the answer to one of those question, and now we can shed some light on the other. Speaking with CinemaBlend, showrunner Melissa Rosenberg shed some light on the rationale behind bringing the defeated villain back to the show: “He’s part of Jessica’s experience in the world. Season one revealed that. And because you come to terms with it, and in her case kill the guy, doesn’t mean that it no longer exists in your psyche. […]

From the word “go” the character and her show (and her comics before that) have served as a vehicle to explore issues surrounding abuse (physical, sexual, and psychological), recovery, and PTSD. The first season of ‘Jessica Jones’ was widely praised for exactly that and the second season certainly isn’t shying away from continuing along that path. Sometimes, however, that manifests in surprising ways. Case in point, within the first few episodes of the new season, a storyline is introduced that deals with a filmmaker who has a history of abusing women. That, of course, is a depressingly familiar story in a post-#MeToo world. But okay, the show’s being topical. Given the issues the first season dealt with, that’s hardly unexpected, right? Well, yes and no. The subject matter itself isn’t the surprising part. What is surprising is the timing of it. As series’ star Krysten Ritter explains: “We finished shooting before the #MeToo movement, and we were all kind of like, “Wow.” It’s a completely crazy coincidence. When all of that started coming out, we were all texting each other: “Holy shit. We’re doing this […]

We already know a bit about some of them, like Oscar, a single father and new superintendent in Jessica’s building played by J.R. Ramirez (formerly of ‘Arrow’). Others, however, remain shrouded in mystery. One such character is an as-yet unnamed individual played by Janet McTeer. McTeer, a two-time Oscar nominee, recently spoke with Entertainment Weekly, where she dropped some hints about just what sort of person her character is and what attracted her to the role: “To play somebody with her kind of issues was something I’d never done before. The way she looks at life is a little skewed. When they sent me scripts of the part, I thought “This is a part I haven’t played before.” To do something you’ve never done before when you’re my age is really cool. I liked the challenge.” What sort of issues exactly? McTeer’s not talking, but she does suggest that her character may find some common ground with Jessica herself: “These characters are damaged by abuse but are nevertheless struggling their way through life, to try and overcome it and by […]

How Kilgrave’s Death Defines ‘Jessica Jones’ Season Two https://sciencefiction.com/2018/03/01/kilgraves-death-defines-jessica-jones-season-two/ https://sciencefiction.com/2018/03/01/kilgraves-death-defines-jessica-jones-season-two/#disqus_thread Thu, 01 Mar 2018 22:06:08 +0000 http://sciencefiction.com/?p=278120 Consequences. This notion has long been key to Marvel’s storytelling. As far back as the 1960s, Marvel emphasized continuity – and thus, consequences – in ways that DC simply didn’t, at least at the time. It’s an ethos that has carried from Marvel’s comics to their films and eventually to their TV shows. And there is perhaps no character who embodies this more than Jessica Jones. After all, if you had to define the character in ten words or less, you’d almost certainly include some variation of “cynical PTSD survivor.” In other words, she’s a character defined by consequences. And the upcoming second season of her Netflix series will certainly see Jessica face the consequences of her actions in the first. In particular, the end of that season saw her snap the neck of her abuser, Kilgrave (memorably played by David Tennant). While that might at first glance seem like a win, it’s actually more of a pyrrhic victory for the private detective.  As showrunner Melissa Rosenberg explains: “On the one hand, she’s gotten rid of a bad guy, but on the other hand she’s become what he wanted her to become, so she’s very deep in doubt about who […]
