Starting its life in comic-book form back in 1977, Marvel’s series told alternate-reality tales about heroes and characters that readers knew well.  The first issue was titled “What if… Spider-Man Joined the Fantastic Four?” and it set the precedent that readers would be seeing, essentially, the early stages of what would eventually become known as The Multiverse. Now that the stories have shifted onto the television screen with the first season of “What If…?,” the tales being told are directly connected to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and its version of classic Marvel characters.  The nine episodes in the inaugural season revolved around tales of alternate versions of The Avengers, Black Panther, Ultron, Doctor Strange, zombies, and more! While the complete list of episodes for Season 2 hasn’t been officially released yet, several leaks claim to outline the entire season.  Items that have been confirmed by Disney include […]

Hulu has recently announced that the new episodes of the sci-fi comedy series will premiere on April 3rd.  The show follows the exploits of “average guy” Josh Futterman (Josh Hutcherson), who is surprised to discover that his favorite video game is actually a recruiting program of a resistance movement from the future, and his finally beating the game triggers two warriors from the future, Tiger (Eliza Coupe) and Wolf (Derek Wilson), to travel back in time to the present day in order to recruit him.  Little do the time travelers know that their video-game program isn’t as rigorous (or popular) as they thought, and Josh is no hero.   RELATED: ‘Utopia Falls’: ‘Divergent’ Meets ‘The Giver’ Meets ‘Footloose’ In The Trailer For Hulu’s New Sci-Fi Musical   In the second season of the show, the trio had believed they were successful in saving the future of mankind but quickly realize that they were mistaken and created an alternate future vastly different from Tiger and Wolf’s […]

Can’t Get Enough Of ‘It’? The Director’s Cut Is Coming! https://sciencefiction.com/2017/12/20/cant-get-enough-directors-cut-coming/ https://sciencefiction.com/2017/12/20/cant-get-enough-directors-cut-coming/#disqus_thread Thu, 21 Dec 2017 01:00:19 +0000 http://sciencefiction.com/?p=270200 A few months back, ‘It’ director Andy Muschietti stated that an extended cut of the film would be coming to home video. When those home video releases were announced, however, the extended cut was nowhere to be seen. So what gives? Asked on Instagram whether or not an extended cut was still on the slate, Muchietti confirmed that it was and that it would be released “in a few months.” The home video release of the theatrical cut will itself include an assortment of deleted scenes. With the extended cut said to run about fifteen minutes longer than the theatrical version, it remains unclear which of these scenes will be re-incorporated into the film. Likewise, there are a number of scenes (including a flashback in which Pennywise eats a baby) that have reportedly been held back from the film’s home video release. Whether that material finds its way into the extended cut or even the anticipated sequel, it is too early to say. This sort of double-dip release is not uncommon (though it’s not exactly popular among fans, either), calling to mind Fox’s handling of ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ back in 2014. Following its theatrical run, the film arrived […]

‘It’ Officially Gets A Sequel, Due In 2019 https://sciencefiction.com/2017/09/26/officially-gets-sequel-2019/ https://sciencefiction.com/2017/09/26/officially-gets-sequel-2019/#disqus_thread Tue, 26 Sep 2017 22:36:56 +0000 http://sciencefiction.com/?p=261407 ‘It’, director Andy Muschietti’s adaptation of the classic Stephen King novel, has proven to be a surprise success at the box office. Were this any other movie, this would be good news simply by virtue of the fact that a well-made horror film was not only exceeding its financial expectations but blowing them out of the water. But thanks to the approach Muschietti and the studio took to the story – a two film adaptation in which the opportunity to adapt the second half of the story was contingent on the success of the first – that success was especially welcome as it meant fans were more likely to get the whole story. In fact, the film’s opening weekend alone made it almost a foregone conclusion that the hoped for sequel would be given the go ahead. But now it’s official, as Warner Bros. has finally announced that the sequel has been greenlit and will be arriving in theaters in September of 2019, where the studio is targeting the same post-Labor Day window in which ‘It’ has already enjoyed massive success. The sequel – tentatively titled ‘It: Chapter 2’ – will rejoin the characters twenty-seven years after the events of […]

Xbox One Release Date Announced https://sciencefiction.com/2013/09/05/xbox-one-release-date-announced/ https://sciencefiction.com/2013/09/05/xbox-one-release-date-announced/#disqus_thread Thu, 05 Sep 2013 16:03:47 +0000 http://sciencefiction.com/?p=122504 Microsoft has finally revealed that official release date of their upcoming next-gen console, Xbox One. The console is set to hit a total of 13 markets worldwide on its release day, Friday, November 22, 2013. Xbox One will be available in Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Mexio, New Zealand, Spain, the UK, and of course, here in the US. Ever since the highly-anticipated unveiling of the Xbox One, Microsoft has been bombarded by gamer dissatisfaction. Over the past couple months, the company has changed many of the features in an attempt to win over many of the former Xbox 360 crowd, including dropping the “always on-line” structure of the console. Of course, this has also led to several of the consoles redeeming features to be dropped as well, including the ability to share games with friends and family members. With the PlayStation 4 being released a full week before on November 15 here in North America, and at a cheaper price, Microsoft is facing some heavy competition. Sony is already well in the lead with pre-order sales, outselling the Xbox One 2-to-1, a considerable number considering that this is only the initial shipment of consoles. PlayStation 4 […]

E3 2013: Xbox One Conference Recap https://sciencefiction.com/2013/06/11/e3-2013-xbox-one-conference-recap/ https://sciencefiction.com/2013/06/11/e3-2013-xbox-one-conference-recap/#disqus_thread Tue, 11 Jun 2013 14:30:05 +0000 http://sciencefiction.com/?p=111325 The big day is finally here, and expectations are soaring. After months of controversy surrounding the next-generation of gaming, E3 is the time for Microsoft and Sony to lay all their cards on the table. Microsoft had a lot of pressure on its shoulders to use this event to impress gamers, so did they succeed? The conference opened with a bang, showing off the first open-world gameplay of the upcoming ‘Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain’ running on Xbox One. Needless to say, it looks very pretty, giving a good example of what we can expect in the future of next-gen graphics. Of course, it also got people hyped for the rest of the show. Microsoft didn’t strictly focus on the Xbox One, however, taking the time to assure gamers that the Xbox 360 is still receiving a lot of support, most notably with some improvements to Xbox Live. Similar to PlayStation Plus, Xbox Live Gold members now have another reason to be paying monthly: 2 free games a month, the first of which will be Assassin’s Creed II and Halo 3. The reward isn’t as significant as PS Plus, but at least Microsoft is trying to give players a […]
