Tom Holland is a busy guy these days – which is to be expected for the newest face of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.  Ever since Sony and Marvel announced their deal to allow the friendly neighborhood teenager to join the ranks of the MCU, plans for the character have been made and implemented faster than a Paul Giamatti-driven Rhino.  This week brings some of the news directly to the fans: confirming a rumor that has been swirling around the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the last few days, the new solo Spider-Man film will be titled ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ and will hit US theaters on July 7, 2017.

Holland himself got to deliver the news to fans at CinemaCon 2016.  The convention, taking place in Las Vegas, was Holland’s second heavy-duty Marvel-related assignment this week; after attending the official premiere of ‘Captain America: Civil War,’ which marks his version of Spider-Man’s debut into Marvel’s on-screen shared universe, Holland hopped on a plane in order to surprise con-goers at the highly anticipated Sony Pictures panel.  Holland even had the opportunity to provide some initial insight into his character and the basic premise of the film, as he told the crowd “It really is a homecoming because, throughout the movie, Peter is trying to find out who he is and where he belongs in this world.”

The newest actor to play Peter Parker also had the honor of telling the crowd the film’s full title and release date – and he get to show them a logo for the film on the big screen.  Check out the picture for more detail, but some fans are already hoping that this is a “soft” logo that’s not set in stone.  While opinions will vary, of course, many initial reactions peg the look as very “young-adult,” which would obviously make sense, given that the MCU Spider-Man will be presented as a teenager with his story very much set in a high-school environment.  Time will also tell if ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ is simply a convenient title or if it will indeed follow the storyline from the Spider-Man comic of the same name.

Last but certainly not least, the Sony panel and CinemaCon ended with Holland showing the audience a new clip from Captain America: Civil War.  Minor SPOILERS for the film follow!

In the scene, Peter comes home to find his Aunt May (Marisa Tomei) sitting on the couch with none other than genius/billionaire/playboy/philanthropist Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.).  It quickly becomes clear that Stark knows about Peter’s web-slinging alter ego, but with a wink and a nod, Tony helps keep the secret from Aunt May – who he’s apparently taken a shine to, saying “it’s hard to believe she’s anyone’s aunt”).  Stark contends that Peter has been selected for a “special program” at Stark Industries and the groundwork for Spidey’s role on Team Iron Man is officially laid.

‘Captain America: Civil War’ hits US theaters on May 6 of this year, and ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ will swing its way into cinemas on July 7, 2017.
